64% of People CAN'T Tell the Difference Between PS4, PC, and XONE - Reality Check

  • 0:00 - 0:08
    [Intro Music]
  • 0:08 - 0:11
    Hey! I'm Cam, and you
    are watching Reality Check.
  • 0:11 - 0:18
That's right, 64% of people can't tell the
difference between PS4, XBox One, and PC.
  • 0:18 - 0:22
At least, that's according to a study
    done by me.
  • 0:22 - 0:24
and, uh, some of you in fact.
  • 0:24 - 0:29
Here's the skinny: Over 2,700 people took
    part in an online test
  • 0:29 - 0:33
    which tasked participants to watch
    3 different gameplay clips back-to-back,
  • 0:33 - 0:39
and then attempt to identify which was
PS4, which was Xbox One, and which was PC.
  • 0:39 - 0:43
    The results were then collected
over the course of a few weeks.
  • 0:43 - 0:45
    Okay, so a few disclaimers:
  • 0:45 - 0:49
    Was the test perfect? No.
    Was it scientific? Kind of.
  • 0:49 - 0:52
Should it be taken as gospel? Probably not
  • 0:52 - 0:57
But does it make an interesting point
about how we value graphics? Definitely.
  • 0:57 - 1:01
But, before we dive into the details of
the test, reveal the correct answer,
  • 1:01 - 1:05
and talk about what went well and what
I would maybe do differently next time,
  • 1:05 - 1:09
let's take a moment to recap and rewind.
  • 1:09 - 1:12
On Monday, the 16th of February,
  • 1:12 - 1:14
I ran an experiment in our GameSpot studio
    in London.
  • 1:14 - 1:18
I got 7 volunteers to play 3 different
    games on 3 identical setups.
  • 1:18 - 1:24
Their task: to tell me which they thought
was PS4, PC, and Xbox One.
  • 1:24 - 1:28
All other ways of identifying each machine
    were controlled for.
  • 1:28 - 1:32
All they had to base their decision on was
how the game looked: the graphics.
  • 1:32 - 1:35
To get the full lowdown of the test
    and how people got on,
  • 1:35 - 1:37
watch that episode of Reality Check.
  • 1:37 - 1:40
The problem, though, was that the
test pool size of 7 people
  • 1:40 - 1:44
was WAY too small to draw any meaningful
    conclusions.
  • 1:44 - 1:49
So, I devised a more simple one that would
allow anyone, anywhere to take part.
  • 1:49 - 1:55
So, how did I do it? Well, I added 3 video
clips at the end of that previous episode,
  • 1:55 - 1:57
all consisting of Far Cry 4 gameplay.
  • 1:57 - 2:02
One clip was captured on PS4, one on Xbox
One, and one on our gaming PC.
  • 2:02 - 2:06
I asked those watching to vote on which
they thought was which in an online poll
  • 2:06 - 2:08
    Simple stuff.
  • 2:08 - 2:10
    Now obviously, web compression was
always gonna be a big problem.
  • 2:10 - 2:14
As a standard for the show I uploaded
the video to GameSpot and Youtube
  • 2:14 - 2:18
at 1080p resolution and 60 fps,
  • 2:18 - 2:21
and both were compressed using the
    H.264 codec.
  • 2:21 - 2:24
Now this is fine for general viewing, but
there is always a degree of
  • 2:24 - 2:29
quality loss and artifacting, so it was
far from ideal for this test.
  • 2:29 - 2:33
So, in an attempt to combat this,
I also uploaded all three clips
  • 2:33 - 2:38
at 1080p-60, packaged up as one movie,
    uncompressed, to Google Drive,
  • 2:38 - 2:41
    for anyone to download and
    watch for themselves.
  • 2:42 - 2:47
Okay, time to reveal the correct answer:
    Clip #1 was PS4.
  • 2:47 - 2:52
#2 was PC, and the final clip was XBox One
  • 2:52 - 2:57
This was the single most popular answer,
    with 982 votes, or 36%.
  • 2:57 - 3:03
The other 64% of voters, though, did get
it wrong, either getting 1 or 0 correct.
  • 3:03 - 3:07
Interestingly though, if you shift the
focus of the test to see how people
  • 3:07 - 3:09
performed at picking out the PC
  • 3:09 - 3:12
from the other 2 consoles, then the
results actually get a lot better,
  • 3:12 - 3:16
with 58% of people correctly identifying
    the non-console.
  • 3:16 - 3:20
That was made up of the 36% who got it
    correct, plus 22% of people
  • 3:20 - 3:23
    who just got the consoles
    the wrong way around.
  • 3:23 - 3:25
As for the rest of the results,
    here they are:
  • 3:25 - 3:29
    391 people, or 14%, voted PS4/Xbox One/PC,
  • 3:29 - 3:34
    311, or 11%, chose PC/Xbox One/PS4,
  • 3:34 - 3:39
291, or 11% again, thought it went
    Xbox One/PS4/PC
  • 3:39 - 3:46
And finally, 104, or 5% of voters,
    chose PC/PS4/and then another PC.
  • 3:46 - 3:49
The eagle eye amongst you will notice
that that last one was wrong.
  • 3:49 - 3:54
The final option should have been
Xbox One, not a second PC.
  • 3:54 - 3:56
So how did that happen? Well,
  • 3:56 - 4:00
that's what we call a derp. (Otherwise
    known as human error.)
  • 4:00 - 4:03
It was very late and I was very sleepy
when I made that poll, simple as that.
  • 4:03 - 4:06
    Whoops!
But it doesn't really matter, though,
  • 4:06 - 4:09
because it was an incorrect answer
    either way.
  • 4:09 - 4:11
So, that was the experiment and
    the results,
  • 4:11 - 4:13
but like I said, it wasn't perfect.
  • 4:13 - 4:16
So it's time to look at some of the
    comments you guys had
  • 4:16 - 4:18
but also think about how I might do this
    differently
  • 4:18 - 4:20
if I was gonna do the test again.
  • 4:20 - 4:24
One big issue a lot of people commented on
was my choice of clips in the experiment.
  • 4:24 - 4:29
Now I used 3 clips from the same early
    stage in Far Cry 4.
  • 4:29 - 4:33
    The areas, though, weren't identical,
but this was a deliberate choice.
  • 4:33 - 4:37
You see, I wasn't attempting to emulate
    the artificial setup
  • 4:37 - 4:39
    of a graphics comparison, rather,
  • 4:39 - 4:43
I was trying to create real-world gaming
    conditions, if that makes sense.
  • 4:43 - 4:47
Sure, identical clips would have made it
    slightly easier,
  • 4:47 - 4:49
as you could have compared identical
    textures like for like.
  • 4:49 - 4:54
But the way I see it is that texture
quality, dynamic lighting, and all other
  • 4:54 - 4:58
graphical settings are all consistent in a
    whole game area.
  • 4:58 - 5:02
And, more to the point, if graphical
    differences between platforms really
  • 5:02 - 5:05
weren't the fuss that a lot of people tend
    to make over them,
  • 5:05 - 5:09
then we should be able to tell
    under the conditions I set.
  • 5:09 - 5:13
That was my logic, anyway, but I'm willing
to be talked around on that one
  • 5:13 - 5:16
if I were to repeat this test.
So let me know what you think.
  • 5:16 - 5:18
The main issue for me, though, with these
    results is that
  • 5:18 - 5:23
I have no way of knowing how many of those
who voted did so after watching the
  • 5:23 - 5:26
online version and how many actually
    downloaded the clips.
  • 5:26 - 5:29
Downloaded votes are far more powerful
  • 5:29 - 5:31
as you can eliminate all that nasty
    compression
  • 5:31 - 5:34
and give people a much fairer test.
  • 5:34 - 5:37
Next time I'd find a way so only
    after actually downloading the file
  • 5:37 - 5:38
    could you cast a vote.
  • 5:38 - 5:41
Then, there's the case of the gaming PC.
  • 5:41 - 5:44
The specs of the one I used are on screen
now, and I think it's fair to say that
  • 5:44 - 5:49
it makes for a reasonably powerful gaming
PC, probably to the higher end of average
  • 5:49 - 5:51
    that most PC gamers have.
  • 5:51 - 5:54
Plus, Far Cry 4 was running at the preset
    ultra settings.
  • 5:54 - 5:57
I'll admit, though, that it would've
    perhaps been fairer
  • 5:57 - 6:00
to have the most powerful PC I could get
    my hands on.
  • 6:00 - 6:04
So next time I'd jam in a Titan X in there
    alongside a better CPU.
  • 6:04 - 6:07
    But despite these changes I
would make in the glory of hindsight,
  • 6:07 - 6:10
I still think these results are really
    interesting.
  • 6:10 - 6:15
For me, this test simply underlines how
graphics are not the most important factor
  • 6:15 - 6:18
to consider if you're trying to decide
which setup is best for you.
  • 6:18 - 6:24
Ultimately, PS4, Xbox One, and a gaming PC
are fairly close in visual quality.
  • 6:24 - 6:28
Sure, you can line up labeled textures and
    spot the highest resolution one
  • 6:28 - 6:29
    in a graphics comparison,
  • 6:29 - 6:33
but when it actually comes down to sitting
on your ass and having a great time gaming
  • 6:33 - 6:37
your ability to tell, and therefore the
    importance of those extra pixels
  • 6:37 - 6:39
or quality of lighting, or whatever—
  • 6:39 - 6:41
    start to diminish.
  • 6:41 - 6:44
Other things like online services, the
    ability to host servers,
  • 6:44 - 6:48
    digital distribution platforms,
    controllers, what your friends use—
  • 6:48 - 6:53
these are far more important when deciding
    which is best for you.
  • 6:53 - 6:56
    It's all about our own
    individual preference.
  • 6:56 - 6:58
But that's just what I think.
  • 6:58 - 7:00
    Do you guys agree
    or do you disagree?
  • 7:00 - 7:03
Or do you have any ideas about how I maybe
could have done the test differently?
  • 7:03 - 7:07
Let me know in the comments down below
or by hitting me up on Twitter @camfrazrob
  • 7:07 - 7:10
    Thanks for watching.
  • 7:10 - 7:28
    [Outro music]
  • 7:29 - 7:31
So, it's time to think about some of the
    comments you guys had,
  • 7:31 - 7:35
but also what I might do differently—
    that was squeaky!
  • 7:35 - 7:38
—comments you had, but also think about
how I might do this differently,
  • 7:38 - 7:41
    Oh there's my chair!
  • 7:41 - 7:43
but also consider what I might do
    differently, if I was going
  • 7:43 - 7:44
    to do this test again.
  • 7:47 - 7:52
[laughs from Cam and the cameraman]
    How did that happen?
  • 7:52 - 7:56
If you guys agree or disagree, or if you
have any other ideas about how I
  • 7:58 - 8:05
    [electronic alarm sound]
