What is smart? | Josh Blacker | TEDxWestVancouverED

  • 0:10 - 0:12
One Halloween I went to a party
  • 0:12 - 0:16
and a friend of mine showed up
    dressed in a white T-shirt, and 501s,
  • 0:16 - 0:19
and about 500 Smarties glued to his pants.
  • 0:19 - 0:21
I said, "What are you dressed as?"
  • 0:21 - 0:22
    He said, "Smarty pants."
  • 0:22 - 0:24
    (Laughter)
  • 0:24 - 0:27
Ever since then I've been intrigued
by the idea of what is "smart."
  • 0:27 - 0:31
As a kid, growing up, I used to
stay up as late as possible
  • 0:31 - 0:35
so I could crash my parents dinner parties
    and entertain the guests.
  • 0:35 - 0:37
    Any laughing or ovation
    would encourage me.
  • 0:37 - 0:39
And I felt as though I was in my element,
  • 0:39 - 0:41
that I was doing what I was meant to do.
  • 0:41 - 0:45
    But that was never encouraged
    as a career choice,
  • 0:45 - 0:47
    because my whole life
I was told that I was smart.
  • 0:47 - 0:50
"Josh, you're so smart you can do
    whatever you want.
  • 0:50 - 0:55
Study, work hard, go to university
and everything will work out perfectly."
  • 0:55 - 1:00
Then when I was sixteen, my family
moved to Canada from South Africa.
  • 1:00 - 1:02
My parents wanted to provide us
  • 1:02 - 1:05
    with the best possible opportunities
    to succeed.
  • 1:05 - 1:06
    But I didn't fit in.
  • 1:06 - 1:10
I had a funny accent, I had my nose
in the books and I didn't know anyone.
  • 1:10 - 1:13
So I joined the drama club.
  • 1:13 - 1:18
We spent hours after school rehearsing,
    reading plays, doing monologues,
  • 1:18 - 1:20
    talking about our dreams
    and how one day
  • 1:20 - 1:23
we were all going to move to L.A.
    and become famous actors. (Laughter)
  • 1:23 - 1:27
One of my mentors once told me
    that there's a pilot light
  • 1:27 - 1:30
inside each one of us that guides us,
  • 1:30 - 1:33
it's a lighthouse in dark and stormy seas.
  • 1:33 - 1:37
It was in those moments that I spent
with my fellow actors in the drama club
  • 1:37 - 1:40
    that my pilot light began
    to burn its strongest.
  • 1:40 - 1:44
    So when it came time
to choose a major at university,
  • 1:44 - 1:47
I approached my friends and my teachers
  • 1:47 - 1:49
and said, "I want to study drama."
  • 1:49 - 1:52
They all reacted exactly the same way.
  • 1:52 - 1:56
    They looked at me, skeptically,
    and said the same thing:
  • 1:56 - 1:59
"Josh that's a waste of your intellect.
  • 1:59 - 2:04
You can be anything. You can be
a lawyer, a doctor, a judge, an engineer.
  • 2:04 - 2:08
Acting is a hobby, not a job."
  • 2:08 - 2:10
So, I went to law school,
  • 2:10 - 2:14
    I passed the bar
and I practiced law for four years.
  • 2:14 - 2:17
    I was miserable.
  • 2:17 - 2:20
    And then one day
I was preparing for a big trial
  • 2:20 - 2:23
and I started to be overwhelmed
    by all these feelings
  • 2:23 - 2:26
of fear, and doubt, and panic.
  • 2:26 - 2:29
I didn't know what to do,
    I was completely overwhelmed.
  • 2:29 - 2:33
I know now that I was having
    an anxiety attack.
  • 2:33 - 2:35
Things had come to a head
    and I was completely overwhelmed;
  • 2:35 - 2:38
I reached out and I called
    an emergency helpline.
  • 2:38 - 2:42
    They talked me down
and referred me to a counselor.
  • 2:42 - 2:45
I spent months talking to a counselor
  • 2:45 - 2:49
about my dreams, my goals, my ambitions.
  • 2:49 - 2:52
And then one day she turned
and looked at me and said:
  • 2:52 - 2:57
"Josh, what is it you most
want to do in the world?"
  • 2:57 - 3:00
I said: "I want to perform.
    I want to act."
  • 3:00 - 3:04
    She took a moment,
and looked at me, and smiled.
  • 3:04 - 3:08
It was a smile of acceptance
    and of encouragement.
  • 3:08 - 3:10
And it was a turning point in my life.
  • 3:10 - 3:12
    It made me realize
I could do what I loved.
  • 3:12 - 3:14
    I could follow that light
    that shone inside me.
  • 3:14 - 3:19
So I quit my job, I moved to Vancouver
    to become a professional actor.
  • 3:19 - 3:21
    That was ten years ago.
  • 3:21 - 3:25
    It's been an amazing journey.
There's been ups and there's been downs.
  • 3:25 - 3:27
    There have been highs
and there have definitely been lows.
  • 3:27 - 3:30
There's been times when I've been
    unemployed for months.
  • 3:30 - 3:33
But I've also had the opportunity
to work with some great actors:
  • 3:33 - 3:35
    Jodie Foster and Matt Damon.
  • 3:35 - 3:40
    And throughout it all
    I've never felt more alive.
  • 3:41 - 3:45
    My pilot light burns brighter
    and stronger than ever.
  • 3:45 - 3:47
    What is "smart"?
  • 3:47 - 3:50
It's being brave enough and strong enough
  • 3:50 - 3:53
to do what you love and follow that light.
  • 3:53 - 3:56
    But also it's seeing
    that light in other people
  • 3:56 - 3:59
and encouraging them to do the same.
  • 3:59 - 4:00
    Thank you.
  • 4:00 - 4:02
    (Applause)
