Why I stopped watching porn: Ran Gavrieli at TEDxJaffa
-
0:18 - 0:21I stopped watching porn
for two reasons basically. -
0:21 - 0:23The first one was that
-
0:23 - 0:29porn brought so much anger and violence
into my private fantasies. -
0:29 - 0:33And these were anger and violence that
were not there originally to begin with. -
0:33 - 0:36And I did not want it for me anymore.
-
0:36 - 0:40This was not me and,
I decided to just put an end to it. -
0:40 - 0:44Easier said than done...
I got it later, but... -
0:44 - 0:47The second reason was
that I became to realize... -
0:47 - 0:51I came to realize that
only by watching porn -
0:51 - 0:54I take part in creating
a demand for filmed prostitution -
0:54 - 0:58because that's what porn really is:
filmed prostitution. -
0:58 - 1:02"Pornē" stands for prostitute,
"graphia" stands for documentation. -
1:02 - 1:05Prostitution was
nobody's childhood dream, -
1:05 - 1:09it is always a result
of trouble and distress. -
1:09 - 1:13Now, I became aware of that gradually,
when I was volunteering -
1:13 - 1:18with men and women in prostitution,
some of them victims of human traffic, -
1:18 - 1:22serving aid in brothels,
under the bridge and street corners. -
1:22 - 1:25But you don't really need to do all that
in order to understand -
1:25 - 1:29how this mechanism of porn
and prostitution works. -
1:29 - 1:35Because porn is a genre - it's not about
erotica or healthy sexual communication. -
1:35 - 1:42It's all about male domination of women,
subordinance of women. -
1:42 - 1:46Not only the sexual practice,
but as a way of being, -
1:46 - 1:49as a genderial hierarchy in this world.
-
1:50 - 1:56If we would ask porn,
-
1:56 - 1:58how does it define something as sexual?
-
1:58 - 2:01What qualifies, what defines
something as sexual? -
2:01 - 2:03Porn would laugh in our face.
-
2:03 - 2:06What defines sexual?
Whatever men find arousing... -
2:06 - 2:09Men find it arousing to choke a woman?
-
2:09 - 2:13To have a brutal sex without one
touch, hug, kiss, tender caress? -
2:13 - 2:15Well then it is sexual.
-
2:16 - 2:20It arouses men to see
a woman or child cry? -
2:20 - 2:22It is sexual.
-
2:22 - 2:27It arouses men to rape a woman,
well, then it is sexual. -
2:27 - 2:30In every mainstream
porn gallery on the web, -
2:30 - 2:35we can find the rape category side by side
with the humiliation category, -
2:35 - 2:39abuse category, crime category and so on.
-
2:39 - 2:44And this is all as if this regular porn
is not already filled with these motives. -
2:44 - 2:48Even in its mildest version,
the mildest version of porn, -
2:48 - 2:52what porn is showing us like,
I know, 80%, maybe 90% of the time -
2:52 - 2:57is actually sex with no hands involved.
This is not how we authentically desire... -
2:57 - 3:01Sorry, I'll repeat that, I see your look.
Sex with no hands involved... okay. -
3:01 - 3:04If you and I are not going
to give up watching porn -
3:04 - 3:07the next thing you do watch
just you just notice that -
3:07 - 3:11porn cameras have
no interest in capturing -
3:11 - 3:14any normal sensual activities
such as petting, caressing, -
3:14 - 3:17making out, touching,
hugging, kissing... No... -
3:17 - 3:21What porn cameras are into
is the penetration. -
3:21 - 3:25So normally the composition
will be a man and a woman, -
3:25 - 3:28hopefully just one, okay...
so, one man and one woman... -
3:28 - 3:30His penis is inside her.
-
3:30 - 3:33It doesn't matter where inside.
Somewhere inside. -
3:33 - 3:35His penis is somewhere inside her,
okay? -
3:35 - 3:37And in order not to block the camera
-
3:37 - 3:40for doing this extreme close up
on the penetration, -
3:40 - 3:44he's standing with his hands
behind his back most of the time. -
3:44 - 3:48And the woman is in this...
uncomfortable position -
3:48 - 3:50and she needs to handle
the penis inside her -
3:50 - 3:53without damaging the hair
or make up or look down on her -
3:53 - 3:56because that's money invested
and time invested in her. -
3:56 - 4:00Without disturbing his aggressive movement
and mainly without blocking the cameras. -
4:00 - 4:02So the result is that we got
two people having sex -
4:02 - 4:07different shapes and acrobatics
or something... but they're having sex -
4:07 - 4:10when the only body parts
that actually touch each other -
4:10 - 4:13are the penis
and the part being penetrated. -
4:13 - 4:15No hands involved.
-
4:15 - 4:21I talked, I don't know, 250-300 times
a year, soldiers, students, pupils... -
4:21 - 4:23No one has ever come up to me and say
-
4:23 - 4:26"Ran, you know that part
with sex with no hands thing -
4:26 - 4:29that was my authentic desire,
like when I was 11 or 12 -
4:29 - 4:31I never wanted to kiss
or touch anybody. -
4:31 - 4:35I was not curious about that.
It was all the penetration to begin with." -
4:35 - 4:39No one has ever said that...
-- before porn. -
4:39 - 4:41After porn...
-
4:41 - 4:44In my private fantasies
before watching porn, -
4:44 - 4:46there was always a very strong narrative
-
4:46 - 4:49and the narrative was
of sensuality and mutuality. -
4:49 - 4:53Which means that I always imagined
what I would say to her? -
4:53 - 4:56What would she possibly answer?
-
4:56 - 4:59What options do I have to respond?
-
4:59 - 5:02In real life it never worked
like I planned, -
5:02 - 5:04but it was important in my mind
in term of arousal -
5:04 - 5:08the build up, the location,
the setting, where will it be? -
5:08 - 5:13What are the circumstances of me and her
being all alone all of a sudden. -
5:13 - 5:19How will this bodily inflaming between us
will emerge step by step? -
5:19 - 5:22It was super important
...before porn. -
5:22 - 5:26After making a habit out of porn...
-
5:26 - 5:31it conquers your mind
and it invades your brain. -
5:31 - 5:34And I lost my ability to imagine.
-
5:34 - 5:37Which mean I found myself...
and I won't be too explicit, -
5:37 - 5:40but trying to masturbate,
just closing my eyes -
5:40 - 5:42trying to fantasize desperately
about something human -
5:42 - 5:44and not making it
because my head was bombarded -
5:44 - 5:49with all of those images of women
being violated and subordinated -
5:49 - 5:53and forced into pretending they
enjoyed diabolic sperm rituals. -
5:53 - 5:59So, this is pretty much the result.
-
5:59 - 6:03We are all vulnerable to pornography.
It's not just young people... -
6:03 - 6:05We should be very careful.
-
6:05 - 6:09Not only what we put into our bodies
in term of food and nutrition... -
6:09 - 6:13But with the nutrition of our mind.
-
6:13 - 6:15Everything we watch invades us.
-
6:15 - 6:19I'll give you a short example
from non-sexual areas. -
6:19 - 6:21I came the other night,
I came back home -
6:21 - 6:24and my beloved one was watching
some cultural junk. -
6:24 - 6:28She was watching a karaoke show audition,
the one with chairs spinning. -
6:28 - 6:31We don't have a TV set back home,
-
6:31 - 6:35but only because it allows us
to falsely present ourselves -
6:35 - 6:37as deep and profound people.
(laughter) -
6:39 - 6:40I've never heard of that.
-
6:40 - 6:44Mastectomy who? Angelina?
No, we don't have a TV. -
6:44 - 6:47We watch every cultural
junk possible, okay? -
6:47 - 6:50Neither me, nor her,
contemplate about existence. -
6:50 - 6:53We download stuff.
And we download all cultural junk. -
6:53 - 6:56I am watching this 20 minutes
karaoke show. -
6:56 - 6:58And it was so boring and tedious.
-
6:58 - 7:00Two minutes talking,
four minutes blabbering. -
7:01 - 7:04I lost patience after 20 minutes
and I went off to take a shower -
7:04 - 7:06and the most interesting
part was in the shower. -
7:06 - 7:10Because what I found out there
was myself in most pathetic state ever... -
7:10 - 7:12I'm going to share it with you.
-
7:12 - 7:14I want to feel that you
accept and love me, -
7:14 - 7:17so I will share my most pathetic moment
and you have to accept it now. -
7:17 - 7:22I don't know until I got over myself
if it took me five, seven, ten minutes -
7:22 - 7:25to realize that I am standing
under the water in the shower -
7:25 - 7:31pondering severely what would've been
my song for the auditions? -
7:32 - 7:35Deep and profound, mind you!
-
7:35 - 7:37I won't be doing
this Rihanna or Lady Gaga's. -
7:38 - 7:40I will be doing Mercedes Sosa's
Como Un Pájaro Libre. -
7:40 - 7:44I'll be doing a cover for
Bob Dylan's Blind Willie McTell. -
7:44 - 7:47Ain't that deep and profound?
-
7:47 - 7:52I had to realize that I'm an idiot
because I have no talent for music. -
7:52 - 7:54More than that, I never wanted to be
-
7:54 - 7:57neither a musician
nor a singer or songwriter. -
7:57 - 8:00This was never a part of my
inner world of wishes, okay? -
8:00 - 8:03But I'm a human being.
What can I do? -
8:03 - 8:06I was watching that for 20 minutes
It entered my brain for a while. -
8:06 - 8:09So if we take this example
we can try to estimate -
8:09 - 8:12the impact of 20 minutes
of watching no matter what, -
8:12 - 8:17how it invades our mind
and conquers our wantings and desires. -
8:17 - 8:21Let's just try to imagine or
I can share it with you orally -
8:21 - 8:24what is the impact
of 20 minutes of watching porn -
8:24 - 8:27once or twice a week,
nothing unmoderated. -
8:28 - 8:30It's overtaking.
-
8:30 - 8:34And porn is in our household,
whether we want it or not -
8:34 - 8:38and I believe that it does not agree
with our well being. -
8:38 - 8:39Because we have internet
-
8:39 - 8:43in the western world all over the place
almost in every cellular phone now -
8:43 - 8:47we've got 90% of 12 year-olds
watching porn on a regular basis. -
8:47 - 8:53And it has both an addictive effect
and a paralyzing effect. -
8:53 - 8:56It's addictive, because it develops
somewhat of a dependency on porn. -
8:56 - 9:00And paralyzing because,
mainly for young boys and men, -
9:00 - 9:06porn is teaching us that
as a man you are solely valued in sex -
9:06 - 9:10by having a large penis
and an eternal erection. -
9:10 - 9:13According to porn,
being a valuable sexual partner -
9:13 - 9:16does not relate with being
sensual, passionate, attentive, -
9:16 - 9:19generous, well-coordinated.
None of the above. -
9:19 - 9:24It is all about large penis
and eternal sunshine, -
9:24 - 9:26which we don't possess.
-
9:26 - 9:27So boys become paralyzed.
-
9:27 - 9:30And if they don't become
paralyzed by watching porn -
9:30 - 9:34very often they turn into imitators
of what they saw, -
9:34 - 9:36which then means
they become aggressors. -
9:36 - 9:39Aggressors,
even when emotion is involved. -
9:39 - 9:43There is so much sexual abuse
going on nowadays -
9:43 - 9:46within the confines of what
we perceive from the outside -
9:46 - 9:51as beautiful teenage love stories,
or healthy adult relationships. -
9:51 - 9:53Because we don't really
talk about sex -
9:53 - 9:56we just see it all over,
we don't really talk about it. -
9:56 - 9:59So, what goes on in the confines
of a certain room -
9:59 - 10:03but these are all sexual mutations
that happen. -
10:03 - 10:06If we talk about women,
it's not only that, -
10:06 - 10:10but young girls even get the message
not only from hardcore porn -
10:10 - 10:13but from a porn influenced
main stream culture. -
10:13 - 10:17Have you seen any Miley Cirus,
Lady Gaga video clips or commercials? -
10:17 - 10:20That's porn with clothes on.
-
10:20 - 10:23So girls get this notion that
if you want to be worthy of love -
10:23 - 10:26first and foremost you have
to be worthy of sexual desire. -
10:26 - 10:32And now, the definition of sexual desire
almost equals: be like a porn star. -
10:32 - 10:37So I work in dozens and dozens
of high schools and junior highs. -
10:37 - 10:40In every single one
of these schools I find girls -
10:40 - 10:45that at a certain point agreed
to be documentedin an intimate situation -
10:45 - 10:49because they wanted to please some guy
that they had feelings for. -
10:49 - 10:53And this guy misappropriated their trust.
Always the same story. -
10:53 - 10:58So he sells it on WhatsApp application
or on the web, on the internet. -
10:58 - 11:01And normally nobody even
addresses him in terms of moral. -
11:01 - 11:05But it is always girls that suffer
from shaming and mortification. -
11:05 - 11:08They can change the school...
they drop out normally. -
11:08 - 11:12They can move to another city
and still be haunted on social networks. -
11:12 - 11:18They develop clinical depressions,
severe eating disorders, -
11:18 - 11:22as if we don't have enough reasons in
our culture to develop eating disorders. -
11:22 - 11:25They become so isolated socially.
-
11:25 - 11:28So some of them - like Amanda Todd,
rest in peace... - -
11:28 - 11:31some of them actually commit suicide.
-
11:32 - 11:35Because they find no more value
in life or in themselves. -
11:35 - 11:41So, porn is not only in our house.
It is a capital case. -
11:41 - 11:44It is not a minor phenomenon
in our society. -
11:44 - 11:47It is a question
of life and death sometimes. -
11:47 - 11:51It is mainly a question of life and death
for the people who participate in porn, -
11:51 - 11:54because porn is not an embodiment
of freedom of speech, -
11:54 - 11:59freedom of occupation, blah-blah... No.
It's an embodiment of sex-exploitation, -
11:59 - 12:04working side-by-side with human traffic
raping, pimping, solicitation. -
12:04 - 12:08For every one porn star
with a book contract -
12:08 - 12:11or a production company,
-
12:11 - 12:14we've got hundreds of
thousands of women and girls -
12:14 - 12:18who do not survive out there.
Literally, they just don't make it. -
12:18 - 12:22The sex industry just chews them up
and spits them back -
12:22 - 12:24into brothels, into hooking in the street,
-
12:24 - 12:28escorting, massage parlors
with happy or unhappy ending -
12:28 - 12:31depends who you ask.
And I am not joking. -
12:31 - 12:35This is the whole
spectrum of prostitution. -
12:36 - 12:40So many of them do not even
make it to the age of 50. -
12:40 - 12:43I am talking about countries
that the life expectancy -
12:43 - 12:46is at 75, 76 years now.
-
12:46 - 12:50They don't make it to the age of 50.
4 reasons mainly. -
12:50 - 12:53Drugs, STD - Sexually
Transmitted Diseases -
12:53 - 12:57being murdered by a john,
a pimp, a boyfriend -
12:57 - 13:00and the fourth reason
is suicide once again. -
13:00 - 13:03Because if you are a prostitute,
on camera or off camera, -
13:03 - 13:06you are in the situation that
we can refer to as social death. -
13:06 - 13:09We have all sat on the dinner table
-
13:09 - 13:12with people who probably
consumed prostitution -
13:12 - 13:15that have been to a brothel
once, twice at least. -
13:15 - 13:17We never sit down
to the table with a prostitute. -
13:17 - 13:21Not with a declared one.
So that's social death. -
13:21 - 13:23It is not glamorous. Not at all.
-
13:23 - 13:28And when I sit in the privacy of my room
and watch porn, even without paying... -
13:28 - 13:30No need to pay, it's free.
-
13:30 - 13:32I hope you know that,
if you're still consuming... -
13:32 - 13:35Whatever I am watching
is creating a demand. -
13:35 - 13:38And wherever there is a demand,
there will be a supply. -
13:38 - 13:40There is a correlation.
-
13:40 - 13:42If I watch pornography of black,
older women, -
13:42 - 13:45somebody is going to go out
and pimp black older women. -
13:45 - 13:48Asian minors? Somebody is
already trafficking Asian minors -
13:48 - 13:50in order to film them.
-
13:50 - 13:54Israeli women, Palestinian women
WASP, all American college girls. -
13:54 - 13:58It's a strong in the last few years
it's a very upcoming category. -
13:58 - 14:00The scum of the Earth
are already out there -
14:00 - 14:04trying to solicit and prostitute
these women on camera. -
14:04 - 14:08So, I stopped watching porn
for my personal well-being. -
14:08 - 14:12My intimate communication,
my private erotic life. -
14:12 - 14:17Reclaiming control
and responsibility over my mind. -
14:17 - 14:18But by doing that,
-
14:18 - 14:22I actually stopped contributing
to this horrible sex industry. -
14:22 - 14:24That's a good thing to do,
I believe. -
14:24 - 14:27And I would really like
to propose that notion -
14:27 - 14:32of physically and emotionally-safe sex,
emotionally-safe sex. -
14:32 - 14:36It does not mean going back to be
conservative or unliberated sexually. -
14:36 - 14:38I am all for sexual freedom.
-
14:38 - 14:42It just means that we need to put
genderial hierarchy aside, -
14:42 - 14:44subordinance aside.
-
14:44 - 14:47And bring back in...
let's just say, "laughter" -
14:47 - 14:49as a critical method for intimacy.
-
14:49 - 14:53Two souls, two humans,
two souls alone in private, -
14:53 - 14:54can they please have a laugh together?
-
14:54 - 14:57Whether they know each other
for a decade or for an hour... -
14:57 - 15:01If two souls alone in a room
do not manage to have a laugh together, -
15:01 - 15:06what good could possibly grow there?
Sexual and non-sexual. -
15:07 - 15:10That's emotionally safe sex.
-
15:11 - 15:14I've got so many things
I want to share with you -
15:14 - 15:16but I feel like my time
is almost up, so... -
15:16 - 15:20I just really want to ask for us
to speak about these issues more -
15:20 - 15:25because I strongly feel that our history
of silence never did us any good, -
15:25 - 15:28because silence
only perpetuates more silence, -
15:28 - 15:31when talking normally
gives birth to more talking, -
15:31 - 15:36more sharing, more identification,
more awareness, more change. -
15:36 - 15:39A small change,
we have a small humble life. -
15:39 - 15:42But a real change, a true one,
emotionally safer. -
15:43 - 15:46Thank you for listening.

This short tutorial on reviewing contains a lot of advice that may help in fixing these issues: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kQ2CZonFYgA&index=7&list=PLuvL0OYxuPwxQbdq4W7TCQ7TBnW39cDRC
Instead of "gonna," please use the full "going to." Learn more at http://translations.ted.org/wiki/English_Style_Guide#Gonna.2C_wanna.2C_kinda.2C_sorta.2C_gotta.2C_.27cause
Note that you don't have to break lines in subtitles shorter than 42 characters. It's not a big issue, but subtitles with very short lines may be distracting to the viewer.

Hi Crystian, how are you? Thank you for the feedback. Can you specify which part you think is not in sync with the reading speed, please? I watched the talk again and timing seems fine with me. This guy talk really fast! Can you check it if you have time? Thank you,
Jeong

Hi Krystian, how are you? Thank you for the feedback! Regarding the breaking lines more than 42 character, I tried to follow that. In terms of reading speed, I thought that this person was talking so fast. So within a second, he talked more. Also, he talked very colloquially for the most part, so I thought that it would be very awkward if the language is changed to the Standard English too much. Should there be any exception to this talk?
Thank you for your guidance.

Is it possible to assign it to me so that I can work on it?
Jeong-Lan Kinser
Hi, I thought that I sent back to Krystian. If he has it, he might be able to help you. I think you worked hard as he was talking really fast. :-)
Thank you!

I'd like to add Portuguese Brazilian subtitles to this talk, but it is not available for me. I already have the .srt file complete and ready to upload. Can someone please help me with it?
Yechezkel Stelzer
I just made a new revision. Now the reading speed is good. I also reviewed the text and made some improvements to make it more readable.
At what stage can additional languages be added? I have a Hebrew SRT file ready to upload.

Thank you for syncing all the minor timing inconstancies. Now I learned that too, so I can do it now from now on as well. Thank you again.
Beautifully done!

You're welcome!
Is it possible to start working yet on additional languages, or does English need to be approved first?

I think English has to be approved first...
