Joy cannot wait: circus school in refugee camps | Laura Vanhanen | TEDxOtaniemi
-
0:12 - 0:16"This makes me feel skilled and useful
-
0:16 - 0:19instead of making me feel useless."
-
0:19 - 0:23I'm sharing a quote from a refugee
who found back her confidence, -
0:23 - 0:27and I'd like to share with you
what makes her say that. -
0:28 - 0:31Refugee situations all over the globe
-
0:31 - 0:33are growing in number,
size, and permanence. -
0:34 - 0:37Being out of school is often the reality
-
0:37 - 0:41for those who've been forced
to leave their homes, -
0:41 - 0:43who are on the move.
-
0:44 - 0:48Crises and conflicts
make a major barrier for learning. -
0:49 - 0:56The right to learn
is most at risk during emergencies, -
0:56 - 0:59and that's exactly
when it's needed the most. -
0:59 - 1:00When a disaster hits,
-
1:00 - 1:05let's say a human-caused conflict
or a natural catastrophe, -
1:07 - 1:11the relief efforts are very quick
at providing and mobilizing -
1:11 - 1:15sanitation, nutrition, shelter, food,
-
1:15 - 1:18clean drinking water, health care.
-
1:18 - 1:21But what about learning?
What about education? -
1:21 - 1:23How about recreational activities?
-
1:24 - 1:27Can those wait for better times?
-
1:29 - 1:34When you ask kids and teenagers
who're living in crisis and conflicts, -
1:35 - 1:38one of their biggest hopes
is to go to school. -
1:39 - 1:41When you miss school,
-
1:41 - 1:46you're in the danger
of psychosocial trauma -
1:46 - 1:49you're in the danger
of psychosocial damage, -
1:49 - 1:50being trafficked,
-
1:50 - 1:52being forced to work in armed groups,
-
1:52 - 1:54or getting married early;
-
1:56 - 1:58and if worse, losing hope.
-
2:00 - 2:03Providing access to education in crisis
-
2:03 - 2:05is not a political priority.
-
2:05 - 2:09Education funding gets less than 2%
-
2:09 - 2:12of all humanitarian funding.
-
2:12 - 2:15However, there's a growing recognition
-
2:15 - 2:17that we need to fix this.
-
2:17 - 2:19We have to fix this.
-
2:20 - 2:22And at the same time,
-
2:22 - 2:26we're starting to understand
the value of playful and joyful learning. -
2:29 - 2:31When Mohammad first came to the camp,
-
2:31 - 2:34he thought he'd be
just staying for a few days. -
2:34 - 2:36Over three years later,
-
2:36 - 2:41he's still living in what's known
as the biggest refugee camp -
2:41 - 2:43in the Middle East: Za'atri.
-
2:43 - 2:45But he's found hope
-
2:45 - 2:48thanks to an unexpected source of joy:
-
2:48 - 2:50the circus school.
-
2:50 - 2:54A group of professionals from Finland
opened the school -
2:54 - 2:57around the same time
when Mohammad arrived at the camp. -
2:58 - 3:00He joined the classes
-
3:00 - 3:03and quickly wanted
to become a trainer himself. -
3:03 - 3:05In the early days,
-
3:05 - 3:08the school was not so well accepted.
-
3:08 - 3:11Some said, "What a waste of time."
-
3:12 - 3:14But a lot has changed.
-
3:14 - 3:19Now people living in the camp
have taken ownership of the trainings, -
3:19 - 3:23and their dream is
one day to return back home -
3:23 - 3:26and establish the first
national circus of Syria. -
3:27 - 3:32While Mohammad's students in his classes
are passionately learning -
3:32 - 3:35new techniques, movements, tricks,
-
3:35 - 3:38they also take away much more than that.
-
3:39 - 3:44It's a model for spreading joy,
confidence, and smiles. -
3:45 - 3:49For some, it's the first laugh
since they've left Syria. -
3:51 - 3:54One of the elders
in the community said it well, -
3:55 - 3:59"Food and shelter will keep you alive,
-
3:59 - 4:02but won't give you the power
to fight for your life." -
4:02 - 4:05So, laughter is a serious business.
-
4:05 - 4:09Acrobatics, funny tricks, and games
-
4:10 - 4:13let you enter the world
-
4:13 - 4:16that's outside of the everyday challenges.
-
4:20 - 4:26These young boys are not at risk
of being socially excluded. -
4:27 - 4:29They are excluded.
-
4:30 - 4:33Some of them feel
that the world has betrayed them. -
4:34 - 4:37However, at the same time,
-
4:38 - 4:44their goal is that this team will one day
be famous for its international shows. -
4:45 - 4:48What's even better,
-
4:48 - 4:51the girls and young women
are extremely active. -
4:52 - 4:55For cultural reasons,
the boys and girls train separately. -
4:55 - 4:58When training, you get to meet friends,
-
4:58 - 5:01you get to make lots of new friends,
-
5:01 - 5:04you get to jump, tumble, joke around.
-
5:05 - 5:10The girls are learning
never to underestimate their abilities. -
5:11 - 5:14That's a good boost of self-confidence.
-
5:14 - 5:17Many mothers are very supportive.
-
5:17 - 5:19One of the mothers said,
-
5:21 - 5:26"For my daughter, a psychologist
might not have had the same effect, -
5:26 - 5:28but the school has."
-
5:29 - 5:33Fatima, one of the female trainers
on the left, says, -
5:33 - 5:35"There's much more joy to life now."
-
5:35 - 5:40The school has given jobs
to those who otherwise wouldn't have any. -
5:40 - 5:43It's a remarkable thing to have a job,
-
5:43 - 5:47to be employed in a refugee camp.
-
5:49 - 5:53The girls make wonderful idols
for the younger ones, -
5:53 - 5:56and they faced a few difficulties
-
5:56 - 6:00convincing the more conservative
members of the community -
6:00 - 6:06that it's OK for girls
to do backflips and make headstands. -
6:07 - 6:09When the camp opened, there were tensions
-
6:09 - 6:12with masses of young men
coming out of the war. -
6:12 - 6:14It can be unstable.
-
6:15 - 6:19It's a simple issue of boredom.
-
6:19 - 6:23When you don't have anything to do,
you have all this unused energy. -
6:24 - 6:26Activities, like the circus,
-
6:26 - 6:29are good at redirecting
that excess energy. -
6:32 - 6:35These young people have been through war,
-
6:36 - 6:41suffering trauma or post-traumatic stress.
-
6:43 - 6:45Many have lost their family.
-
6:47 - 6:50But they're learning to trust again
-
6:51 - 6:54because trust is needed
in the crowded camp. -
6:54 - 6:55From the outside,
-
6:55 - 6:58this looks like any of the other tents,
-
6:58 - 7:03but this particular tent brings hope
to those who are waiting to go home. -
7:05 - 7:06And what's new?
-
7:06 - 7:09Recently, the circus school
got bigger and better facilities -
7:09 - 7:12with air conditioning and higher ceilings,
-
7:12 - 7:16so now you can make higher tricks
and train for longer hours. -
7:17 - 7:21Making this happen
doesn't require a lot of investments, -
7:22 - 7:26but it's an effective way to build
a more sustainable tomorrow. -
7:26 - 7:28Yes, we know;
-
7:28 - 7:31when there's crisis or during emergencies,
-
7:31 - 7:34it's vital to take care
of the basic needs, -
7:34 - 7:37but the circus school also shows us
-
7:37 - 7:40that opportunities to play are needed.
-
7:42 - 7:46In other words, joy cannot wait.
-
7:46 - 7:48(Applause)

People's lives don't stop in refugee camps. The need to learn, play and hope is just as important, if not more so, in camps than anywhere else. So, how can you support these needs?
Laura tells the story of a circus school, which was opened by young Syrian talents, Sirkus Magenta and FCA @FCA_global in Za'atri, Jordan. With her experience in Finnish education sector development and learning solutions, Laura is working with projects strengthening access to quality education in fragile contexts: refugee situations and developing countries.
