If you adults won't save the world, we will
-
0:01 - 0:03Dear Abuelita,
-
0:03 - 0:05I know I haven't been home for a while.
-
0:05 - 0:08You are in our lovely home in Mexico,
-
0:08 - 0:10and I'm here in the US,
-
0:10 - 0:11fighting for our future.
-
0:12 - 0:14You're probably watering the roses,
-
0:14 - 0:16taking care of the peaches
-
0:16 - 0:19and making sure your turtles are well-fed.
-
0:19 - 0:22That's one of the things
I miss the most about home -- -
0:22 - 0:24spending time with the flowers
-
0:24 - 0:27while you tell me stories
about your childhood. -
0:28 - 0:32As you know, we have been living
in New York City since 2015. -
0:32 - 0:36But life has completely changed
over the past year. -
0:36 - 0:40At first, New York City was about museums
-
0:40 - 0:41and parks
-
0:41 - 0:42and school and friends.
-
0:43 - 0:45Now it serves as a web
-
0:45 - 0:48that connects me with all the other people
-
0:48 - 0:50who are organizing to save the planet.
-
0:51 - 0:53You know how it started for me?
-
0:53 - 0:55It was Dad and his wisdom.
-
0:56 - 1:00Everything you taught him,
he went and taught the world. -
1:00 - 1:04All of his words about
the responsibility that we have as humans -
1:04 - 1:07to live in balance with nature
-
1:07 - 1:08were passed down to me.
-
1:09 - 1:12I noticed the universal
disconnect to our planet -
1:12 - 1:15and remembered what you once told me:
-
1:15 - 1:18"Leave everything better
than you found it." -
1:19 - 1:22I know you were talking about the dishes,
-
1:22 - 1:24but of course, that applies
to the planet as well. -
1:25 - 1:27I didn't know what to do at first.
-
1:27 - 1:29The world is so big,
-
1:29 - 1:31and it has so many bad habits.
-
1:31 - 1:35I didn't know how a 15-year-old
was supposed to change anything, -
1:35 - 1:36but I had to try.
-
1:37 - 1:39To put this philosophy into practice,
-
1:39 - 1:42I joined the environmental club
at my high school. -
1:42 - 1:47However, I noticed that my classmates
were talking about recycling -
1:47 - 1:49and watching movies about the ocean.
-
1:49 - 1:51It was a view of environmentalism
-
1:51 - 1:56that was so catered towards
an ineffective way of climate activism, -
1:56 - 1:59one that blames the consumer
for the climate crisis -
1:59 - 2:02and preaches that
temperatures are going up -
2:02 - 2:05because we forgot to bring
a reusable bag to the store. -
2:06 - 2:09You taught me that taking care
of Mother Earth -
2:09 - 2:12is about every decision
that we make as a collective. -
2:13 - 2:15I am happy to tell you, Abuelita,
-
2:15 - 2:18that I changed everybody's
mind in that club. -
2:18 - 2:21Instead of talking about recycling,
-
2:21 - 2:24we started to write letters
to our politicians -
2:24 - 2:26to ban soft plastic altogether.
-
2:26 - 2:29And then, the unexpected happened:
-
2:30 - 2:32we started striking from school.
-
2:34 - 2:36I know you've probably
seen it on the news, -
2:36 - 2:38and maybe it's not that special anymore.
-
2:38 - 2:42But at the time,
it was a huge deal, Abuelita. -
2:42 - 2:46Imagine kids not going to school,
because we want people to save the world. -
2:46 - 2:49(Video) Crowd: Another world
is possible! We are unstoppable! -
2:49 - 2:51Xiye Bastida: For the first
global climate strike, -
2:51 - 2:53which was called on by Greta Thunberg,
-
2:53 - 2:57I got 600 of my classmates
to walk out with me. -
2:58 - 3:02Greta Thunberg is a teenager
who first started striking for climate. -
3:02 - 3:05Her boldness inspired me,
-
3:05 - 3:08and I was shocked by the realization
-
3:08 - 3:12that youth could turn
public opinion on social issues. -
3:12 - 3:13The movement exploded.
-
3:13 - 3:15(Video) Crowd: Shut it down!
-
3:15 - 3:17XB: And I became
one of the main organizers -
3:17 - 3:19for New York, the US and the world.
-
3:19 - 3:22(Video) XB: What do we want?
Crowd: Climate justice! -
3:22 - 3:24XB: When do we want it?
Crowd: Now! -
3:24 - 3:27XB: I started speaking up about
climate justice and Indigenous rights -
3:27 - 3:29and intergenerational cooperation.
-
3:29 - 3:31That was only the beginning, though.
-
3:31 - 3:33The busiest week of my life
-
3:33 - 3:37will forever be the week
of September 20, 2019. -
3:37 - 3:44Me and my friends got 300,000 people
to strike for climate in New York. -
3:44 - 3:46I wish you could have been there.
-
3:46 - 3:49We walked through Wall Street,
demanding climate justice. -
3:49 - 3:52(Video) Crowd: No more coal, no more oil,
keep the carbon in the soil! -
3:52 - 3:55XB: That same month, I went
to the United Nations Climate Summit. -
3:55 - 3:57I spoke on a panel with Al Gore.
-
3:58 - 4:02I met Jay Inslee and Naomi Klein
and Bill McKibben -
4:02 - 4:04and the president of the United Nations.
-
4:05 - 4:07It was the most amazing week of my life,
-
4:07 - 4:10because everyone I knew came together --
-
4:10 - 4:13all my teachers, all my classmates ...
-
4:13 - 4:17And even some of my favorite stores
closed down to strike for climate. -
4:19 - 4:21If you had asked me why I did all of that,
-
4:21 - 4:23my only answer would be,
-
4:23 - 4:25"How could I not?"
-
4:26 - 4:29It's been one year
since it all started for me, -
4:29 - 4:31and it gets a little tiring at times.
-
4:32 - 4:35But if there is one thing
that you taught me, it's resilience. -
4:36 - 4:40I remember that you went to Mexico City
every day for 30 years -
4:40 - 4:42to get money for the family.
-
4:42 - 4:46And I know that Abuelito
has been going out for 20 years -
4:46 - 4:50to protect sacred land from big companies
that want to take it. -
4:50 - 4:51A year is nothing
-
4:52 - 4:54compared to the struggles
that our family has been through. -
4:55 - 4:58And if our struggles
make the world a better place, -
4:58 - 5:00they will make us better people.
-
5:01 - 5:03There have been some hardships, Abuelita.
-
5:03 - 5:05Out there in the world,
-
5:05 - 5:08people expect us kids to know everything,
-
5:08 - 5:10or at least they want us to.
-
5:10 - 5:12They ask questions and I give answers,
-
5:12 - 5:15as if I really knew how the world works.
-
5:15 - 5:17They want hope, and we give it.
-
5:19 - 5:24I have organized, written, spoken
and read about climate and policy -
5:24 - 5:26almost every day for the past year.
-
5:27 - 5:29And I'm just a little worried
-
5:29 - 5:31that I won't be able
to do enough, Abuelita. -
5:32 - 5:36For me, being 18 years old
and trying to save the world -
5:36 - 5:38means being a climate activist.
-
5:39 - 5:41Before, maybe it meant
studying to be a doctor -
5:41 - 5:43or a politician or a researcher.
-
5:44 - 5:47But I can't wait to grow up
and become one of those things. -
5:48 - 5:49The planet is suffering,
-
5:49 - 5:52and we don't have the luxury
of time anymore. -
5:53 - 5:57Saving the world as a teenager
means being good with words, -
5:57 - 6:00understanding the science
behind the climate crisis, -
6:00 - 6:04bringing a unique perspective
into the issue to stand out -
6:04 - 6:07and forgetting about
almost everything else. -
6:07 - 6:10But sometimes, I want to care
about other things again. -
6:10 - 6:14I want to be able to sing
and dance and do gymnastics. -
6:14 - 6:18I truly feel that if all of us
took care of the Earth -
6:18 - 6:19as a practice,
-
6:19 - 6:21as a culture,
-
6:21 - 6:25none of us would have to be
full-time climate activists. -
6:25 - 6:27When businesses turn sustainable,
-
6:27 - 6:31when the power grid
runs on renewable energy, -
6:31 - 6:34when the school curriculum teaches us
-
6:34 - 6:37that taking care of the Earth
is part of our humanity, -
6:38 - 6:41maybe I can do gymnastics once again.
-
6:41 - 6:42Don't you think so, Abuelita?
-
6:43 - 6:44We can do this.
-
6:45 - 6:46All I'm trying to do with my work
-
6:46 - 6:49is give that optimistic mindset
to other people. -
6:50 - 6:51But it's been a little hard.
-
6:52 - 6:53There is greed,
-
6:53 - 6:54there's pride,
-
6:55 - 6:56there's money,
-
6:56 - 6:57and there's materialism.
-
6:57 - 7:00People make it so easy
for me to talk to them, -
7:01 - 7:04but they make it so hard
for me to teach them. -
7:05 - 7:08I want them to have the confidence
to always do their best. -
7:08 - 7:11I want them to have
the heart and the courage -
7:11 - 7:12to love the world,
-
7:13 - 7:15just like you taught me.
-
7:15 - 7:16I wrote this letter to thank you.
-
7:17 - 7:20Thank you for inviting me
to love the world -
7:20 - 7:21since the moment I was born.
-
7:22 - 7:24Thank you for laughing at everything.
-
7:24 - 7:25Thank you for teaching me
-
7:25 - 7:30that hope and optimism
are the most powerful tools we have -
7:30 - 7:31to tackle any problem.
-
7:32 - 7:35I do this work because you showed me
-
7:35 - 7:37that resilience, love and knowledge
-
7:37 - 7:39are enough to make a difference.
-
7:39 - 7:42I want to go back to Mexico and visit you.
-
7:42 - 7:45I want to show you the pictures
of the things that I have done. -
7:45 - 7:47I want to show you the climate legislation
-
7:48 - 7:49that we've been able to pass.
-
7:49 - 7:51I want to smell the flowers
-
7:51 - 7:53and fight for climate justice
alongside you. -
7:54 - 7:55Te quiero mucho.
-
7:55 - 7:57I love you.
-
7:57 - 7:58Xiye.
-
7:58 - 8:02[Te quiero mucho. Xiye.]

-
In a deeply moving letter to her grandmother, Xiye Bastida reflects on what led her to become a leading voice for global climate activism -- from mobilizing school climate strikes to speaking at the United Nations Climate Summit alongside Greta Thunberg -- and traces her resolve, resilience and profound love of the earth to the values passed down to her.
