Hey Obama! Here’s How You REALLY Pardon A Turkey

  • 0:00 - 0:04
President Obama: Happy Thanksgiving and welcome
    to the White House.
  • 0:04 - 0:07
Tomorrow is one of the best days of the year
    to be an American.
  • 0:08 - 0:13
It’s a day to count our blessings, spend
time with the ones we love, and enjoy some
  • 0:13 - 0:15
good food and some great company.
  • 0:15 - 0:19
But it’s also one of the worst days of the
    year to be a turkey.
  • 0:20 - 0:22
They don’t have it so good.
  • 0:22 - 0:27
The rare exception of course are the two birds
    who've joined me today.
  • 0:35 - 0:40
Hi it's Emily from Bite Size Vegan and welcome
    to another vegan nugget.
  • 0:40 - 0:44
Every year, the President of the United States
pardons two turkeys from being slaughtered
  • 0:44 - 0:45
    for Thanksgiving.
  • 0:45 - 0:50
But what most people don’t realize about
    this supposedly lighthearted tradition is
  • 0:50 - 0:54
that the majority of pardoned turkeys die
within a year of their pardon.
  • 0:54 - 0:59
And this year, as in several times before,
the two presidential turkeys will come from
  • 0:59 - 1:02
    my state—Iowa.
  • 1:02 - 1:08
Two days ago I was at a turkey slaughterhouse in Iowa, where over 20,000 turkeys a day are killed.
  • 1:09 - 1:10
    They were terrified.
  • 1:10 - 1:13
Sitting in the cold for hours upon hours.
  • 1:13 - 1:16
    Covered and feces and sores.
  • 1:16 - 1:20
One with a growth the size of a basketball
    on her chest.
  • 1:20 - 1:25
I stayed with them for hours and streamed
footage live to the channel to share their
  • 1:25 - 1:28
stories on the last day of their lives.
  • 1:28 - 1:32
You can see those videos to be with them here.
    [See upper right corner]
  • 1:34 - 1:40
The turkeys we eat are bred to grow very large
very fast and are slaughtered at around 18-20
  • 1:40 - 1:41
    weeks of age.
  • 1:41 - 1:47
Because they’re so unnaturally large, those
with the good fortune of being pardoned die
  • 1:47 - 1:50
    from typically obesity-related complications.
  • 1:50 - 1:55
And as for where they get to live out the
    brief remainder of their lives?
  • 1:55 - 2:00
    Destinations have ranged from Disneyland,
to Mount Vernon, to this place, and now…here,
  • 2:00 - 2:05
where the public gets to ogle them in their
    enclosures.
  • 2:05 - 2:10
This extravagant production, run by the lobbyist
    organization the National Turkey Federation,
  • 2:10 - 2:15
essentially serves as an extended governmental
    infomercial for the turkey industry.
  • 2:15 - 2:22
The Federation’s annual turkey gifting began
more or less in 1947 when angry farmers sent
  • 2:22 - 2:27
crates of live hens to President Truman in
protest of his failed “poutlryless Thursday”
  • 2:27 - 2:31
attempt to reduce national meat and egg consumption.
  • 2:31 - 2:34
But it doesn’t take a president to pardon
    a turkey.
  • 2:34 - 2:39
And as you can see, it’s not much of a reprieve
    after all.
  • 2:39 - 2:44
To show you how it’s really done, and shine
some light on this dark holiday—founded
  • 2:44 - 2:50
upon the massacre of an entire people, who
still mourn the loss of their families while
  • 2:50 - 2:52
others gather in celebration with their own.
  • 2:52 - 2:58
I want to share with you a story of hope from
    Rowdy Girl Sanctuary in Texas.
  • 2:58 - 3:05
The following video was created by the incredible
film making team Chee Wei and Alana Tompson.
  • 3:05 - 3:13
You’ll hear Rowy Girl Founder Renee mention
FFA, which along with 4-H is pro-farming agricultural
  • 3:13 - 3:18
youth program, teaching children how to raise,
care for and show so-called “food” animals
  • 3:18 - 3:20
    before sending them to slaughter.
  • 3:20 - 3:26
To hear more about other FFA and 4H survivors,
see this video about the residents of
  • 3:26 - 3:27
    Rowdy Girl Sanctuary.
  • 3:28 - 3:31
    [Phone Rings]
  • 3:31 - 3:33
    Renee: Hi, Is this Lillie?
  • 3:33 - 3:36
This is Renee King Sonnen with the Rowdy Girl
    Sanctuary.
  • 3:36 - 3:38
    I have a strange request.
  • 4:07 - 4:10
Renee: Right now, we are going to rescue two
  • 4:10 - 4:14
turkeys that would have been slaughtered through
    the FFA system.
  • 4:14 - 4:20
We saw a flyer in a health food store a couple
of days ago advertising these two turkeys
  • 4:20 - 4:22
for sale for fifty dollars each.
  • 4:22 - 4:28
We grabbed the flyer, took it off the wall,
left and straight away called and talked to
  • 4:28 - 4:32
the lady to see if she would pardon these
    two turkeys.
  • 4:35 - 4:35
    Renee: Hi
  • 4:35 - 4:37
Lillie: Hey! How are you doing?
  • 4:37 - 4:38
Renee: So good to meet you
  • 4:38 - 4:45
Renee: In Texas and other parts of the country,
FFA is a real valued, traditional and cultural
  • 4:45 - 4:46
    experience for our youth.
  • 4:46 - 4:51
But of course folks who really, really love
animals and choose not to participate in any
  • 4:51 - 4:53
of the violence towards them at all.
  • 4:53 - 5:00
We are just elated that she said 'Yes' to
pardoning the last two that she has.
  • 5:00 - 5:03
Renee: So they just got out of the FFA?
  • 5:03 - 5:05
    Lillie: Yeah! the Fair, the
    Brazoria County Fair
  • 5:05 - 5:06
Renee: So you had how many?
  • 5:06 - 5:07
    Lillie: We had twenty.
  • 5:07 - 5:08
    Renee: Twenty!
  • 5:08 - 5:13
Lillie: I have three kids so, we had nine
    in the show.
  • 5:13 - 5:17
Renee: So had you have any that, when they
were ready to take them all away…
  • 5:17 - 5:20
I heard that they call it the trail of tears,
you know, when they go and …
  • 5:20 - 5:22
    Lillie: don’t know..
  • 5:23 - 5:25
Anna is getting to keep her rabbit...
  • 5:25 - 5:26
    Renee: really?!
  • 5:26 - 5:29
Lillie: So, her rabbit that made eleventh
out of eighty four she’s going to keep him
  • 5:29 - 5:31
and he’s going to live here forever.
  • 5:31 - 5:33
    Renee: Awww! that’s so awesome!
  • 5:33 - 5:38
Lillie: we can compromise when we can but these
were bred for certain purpose and that’s what...
  • 5:39 - 5:41
Renee: You got to and you get that—
  • 5:41 - 5:42
Lillie: Yes I have to have that mentality.
  • 5:42 - 5:45
Renee: Yeah! you have to have
that mentality to do it. Exactly!
  • 5:45 - 5:46
Lillie: Yeah, otherwise I just don’t...
  • 5:46 - 5:49
    Renee: You lose your mind
    Lillie: I wouldn’t do it!
  • 5:49 - 5:52
    I wouldn’t do it! I wouldn’t raise them if I—you know...
  • 5:52 - 5:53
    Renee: No!...
  • 5:53 - 5:56
Renee: You are so awesome to be doing this with us
    Lillie: Yep
  • 5:57 - 5:58
Renee: Can I give you another Hug?
  • 6:00 - 6:03
    [Heartwarming Music continues]
  • 6:37 - 6:42
Renee: It was such an experience to see
this woman open her heart and pardon those
  • 6:42 - 6:43
    two turkeys.
  • 6:43 - 6:48
To see the other turkeys that were destined
to be Thanksgiving dinner was really sad.
  • 6:48 - 6:51
You know, we really wanted all of them
  • 6:55 - 6:56
Tommy: You can’t save them all.
  • 6:56 - 7:01
    There’s probably 80 Million turkeys
that are going to be harvested in the next
  • 7:01 - 7:04
few weeks for Thanksgiving dinner this year.
  • 7:07 - 7:09
Renee: These turkeys are so inquisitive.
  • 7:09 - 7:14
And they have personalities, you know, they
love life, they want to live!
  • 7:16 - 7:21
Renee: Thanksgiving is a time when families
all get together nieces, nephew, uncles.
  • 7:21 - 7:23
Families call, they come from all over.
  • 7:24 - 7:29
You may not see these family members but that
one time a year, so it really is a celebration
  • 7:29 - 7:31
    of love.
  • 7:32 - 7:35
    [Uplifting Music]
  • 7:41 - 7:48
Renee: This year, this Thanksgiving, these
two Turkeys are going to be celebrated so
  • 7:48 - 7:53
that instead of giving thanks for a turkey
on our plate, we are going to thanks for these
  • 7:53 - 7:57
turkeys and we are going to be giving them
    a Thanksgiving Dinner to remember!
  • 8:07 - 8:11
Renee: So everyone is gonna want to know
I'm sure what their names are gonna be
  • 8:11 - 8:14
because right now they have no names.
  • 8:14 - 8:19
And we have decided to give them names of
the two folks behind the camera right now.
  • 8:19 - 8:22
We have Alana with Black Ant Films.
  • 8:22 - 8:28
So we are going to call one of them Alana
So.. that’s one name. And then the other one,
  • 8:28 - 8:33
we were going to call her Chee Wei—
he’s the producer of De Claffer Music.
  • 8:33 - 8:38
But we decided that instead of calling him
Chee Wei, since that’s a masculine term,
  • 8:38 - 8:39
we are going to call her Chi Chi.
  • 8:39 - 8:41
So we got Chi Chi and Alana.
  • 8:41 - 8:44
We want to welcome them to
    Rowdy Girl Sanctuary.
  • 8:50 - 8:54
Please share this video this holiday season

  • 9:19 - 9:22

  • 9:22 - 9:23
    "Thanksgiving," y'know?
  • 9:24 - 9:26
    Don't forget them.
  • 9:28 - 9:31
Cause it might just seem like...
  • 9:31 - 9:35
trucks full of identical birds, you know?
  • 9:35 - 9:36
One's the same as the other?
  • 9:36 - 9:40
    But those are individuals.
  • 9:40 - 9:44
    For each one of them,...
  • 9:44 - 9:46
this is their life— this is their only life.
  • 9:47 - 9:49
    This is their last day.
  • 9:49 - 9:57
They're about to go inside and experience
something that none of us can even fathom.
  • 9:58 - 9:59
    It's their life.
