Basic Barré Chords #2of4 (Guitar Lesson CH-006) How to play
-
0:19 - 0:25When you play a regular open E chord,
the low note E is the open string, -
0:25 - 0:26which is the 6th string.
-
0:26 - 0:29So that's kind of the, what we
call the 'root' note of the chord. -
0:29 - 0:34The concept of this root note is that if
we move a chord and it doesn't use any -
0:34 - 0:39open strings the chord has a root note
and that becomes the name of the chord. -
0:39 - 0:43So this chord here, where
we moved E up one fret, -
0:43 - 0:49and put the barre down to make F,
the reason that that chord is called F, -
0:49 - 0:53is cause the root note, the note
underneath your first finger is the note F. -
0:53 - 0:57Now if we think about where the
other notes are on the 6th string, -
0:57 - 1:02say the 3rd fret of the
6th string is the note G, -
1:02 - 1:06so if we put down our barre chord shape,
the same one that we're just talking about now, -
1:06 - 1:10but now the 3rd fret,
the note underneath the 1st finger, -
1:10 - 1:143rd fret, 6th string, is the note
G, so it becomes a G chord. -
1:14 - 1:20And then if we move it up
another two frets it becomes the note A. -
1:20 - 1:25So this becomes A barre chord, and you
can hear these things if you test them, -
1:25 - 1:29it's quite a nice thing to listen
to, is the G at the 3rd fret, -
1:29 - 1:34barre chord and G open
chord. Very, very similar chords. -
1:34 - 1:40An A chord with open A.
That's A at the 5th fret. -
1:40 - 1:45They sound slightly different of
course, it's a different voicing, -
1:45 - 1:48or a different grip of the
chord, but it's essentially the same chord. -
1:48 - 1:50So it's a good
idea that you hear
that. -
1:50 - 1:53Now, there's also a
few very common variations. -
1:53 - 1:58Of this E shape. We've
just been talking about E Major, -
1:58 - 2:00and that's definitely the first one
that you should try and get down, -
2:00 - 2:04but after that you can
also learn minor, dominant 7th, -
2:04 - 2:09and minor 7. Dominant 7th
is obviously sometimes just called 7. -
2:09 - 2:12So, we're gonna go
back to another closeup now, -
2:12 - 2:16if I can get my little
remote going, and then we'll check -
2:16 - 2:20out what these other variations are
on the E barre chord shape. -
2:20 - 2:25OK, here we are now, this
is up at the 5th fret, -
2:25 - 2:30I'm holding this chord down, this
would be an A barre chord, -
2:30 - 2:34A Major, and just very often
referred to as just A barre chord. -
2:34 - 2:37Now, the first variation that
you want to learn of this, -
2:37 - 2:39or the first kind of way
of changing this into another chord, -
2:39 - 2:45is by lifting of the 2nd
finger, will get us an Am chord. -
2:45 - 2:49Just the same as when you had an E
open chord and you lifted off your 1st finger, -
2:49 - 2:53you got an Em chord,
with this, we started with A, -
2:53 - 2:57if we lift off the 2nd
finger we get Am barre chord. -
2:57 - 3:03Obviously my helps in
here (?), there's the Major, -
3:03 - 3:08lift off that 2nd finger,
and you've got the minor. -
3:08 - 3:10Now you can see that my 2nd finger's kind of
-
3:10 - 3:14lending a little bit of assistance
there to the 1st finger. -
3:14 - 3:16It's completely cool for that one
to sit on top there a bit. -
3:16 - 3:19It does make it a lot
easier to hold the barre down. -
3:19 - 3:21I don't recommend that
you only learn that way, -
3:21 - 3:24but particularly when you start, you
might want a little bit of assistance. -
3:24 - 3:28Or if the action's high on your guitar, and
you need to press the strings down pretty hard, -
3:28 - 3:32that can be a bit of
an advantage. So then we've got Major, -
3:32 - 3:41lift off the 2nd finger, minor. Now, if
we go back to Major for a second, -
3:41 - 3:48and we lift off little finger,
we end up with a 7. -
3:48 - 3:54Just again, if you think back to E
chord, if you have a regular E chord, -
3:54 - 3:58and you lifted off your 3rd
finger, you'd end up with E7. -
3:58 - 4:00And so the same shape applies
up here, so this is A, -
4:00 - 4:09lift off little finger, and you've got
A7, now you can combine those two things, -
4:09 - 4:12which was lifting off
2nd finger to get minor, -
4:12 - 4:18lifting off little finger to
get 7, and you get m7. -
4:18 - 4:23Am7, so Major, lift off
2nd finger rather, is minor, -
4:23 - 4:29lift off little finger is A7.
Lift off 2nd finger and little finger, -
4:29 - 4:38and you get Am7. So there (?)
the four common E shape barre chord forms. -
4:38 - 4:45Major, minor, 7 and m7.
-
4:45 - 4:48So you definitely want
to check those things out. -
4:48 - 4:53Remember that they all move,
so that was A, 7, -
4:53 - 4:56with the little finger off, if
I move it up 1 it's Bb7, -
4:56 - 5:00if I move it up again it's B7. You got it.
-
5:00 - 5:05They all move around as much as you like.
-
5:05 - 5:08This is a pretty weird one, I'm
not trying to show off my T-shirt, -
5:08 - 5:10and I'm not trying to look
like I'm chopping my own head off. -
5:10 - 5:13I just want to talk a little
bit about this part of your arm, -
5:13 - 5:17and how it sits for your barre chord.
-
5:17 - 5:19So right now I'm holding an A barre chord,
-
5:19 - 5:23You can see here that this join
here from my forearm into my hand, -
5:23 - 5:26is quite straight along here.
-
5:26 - 5:28A lot of people when
they start their barre chords, -
5:28 - 5:33they try and do this, so in
order to make their 1st finger straight here, -
5:33 - 5:35their trying to
straighten their whole hand, -
5:35 - 5:38and they put a really
big kink in their hand there, -
5:38 - 5:40and that's kinda bending
in the wrong place. -
5:40 - 5:42If you keep your
1st finger straight of course, -
5:42 - 5:45you think about it, instead of,
to make your 1st finger straight, -
5:45 - 5:48you can either do that,
bring your whole hand up, -
5:48 - 5:51or you could just bend your fingers up,
and keep this part of your hand straight. -
5:51 - 5:53Which is a lot
better, you've got all of -
5:53 - 5:56the muscles that control
your fingers are in your forearm, -
5:56 - 6:00they're up here, you can see them
wiggling around when you move your fingers. -
6:00 - 6:04And they're controlled by tendons which
run down the back of your fingers, -
6:04 - 6:08down into your forearm there, and
if your wrist is locked like that, -
6:08 - 6:10it's not very good for
the tendons, they tend to rub, -
6:10 - 6:15and it can kinda lead to RSI
and I think it's called Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. -
6:15 - 6:19I'm not a doctor, but this is
just the, no, I'm not a doctor, -
6:19 - 6:21but I'll have a look at it for you.
-
6:21 - 6:26So, this is what I've
heard about this Carpal Tunnel, -
6:26 - 6:29is caused often by the wrist
being too locked up like this. -
6:29 - 6:32So, try and make sure
when you're playing your barre, -
6:32 - 6:34if you find that your
wrist is forward like that, -
6:34 - 6:37try and concentrate on flattening
that part of your wrist out, -
6:37 - 6:41and making sure that you're
bending, it's not perfectly flat, -
6:41 - 6:43but it's pretty close to flat.
-
6:43 - 6:44That's my barre chord shape there.
-
6:44 - 6:47(?) it's pretty straight, yeah?
-
6:47 - 6:50So, um, yeah, so just be aware of that.
-
6:50 - 6:52Also be aware of this.
-
6:52 - 6:56A lot of people do this
when they try and play barre chords. -
6:56 - 6:58They stick their elbow right out
like this, it looks kinda funny. -
6:58 - 7:00I call it chicken wings.
-
7:00 - 7:02So, just be aware of that.
-
7:02 - 7:03If you find that your
elbow's looking a bit uncomfortable, -
7:03 - 7:04or you've got a lot
of tension in your shoulder, -
7:04 - 7:08try and imagine that your fingers are stapled or nailed onto the guitar neck,
-
7:08 - 7:11and then just relax your forearm.
-
7:11 - 7:13'Cause it really should be, even
though look I'm playing the chord, -
7:13 - 7:17this is really completely loose
see, it's not even slightly tense. -
7:17 - 7:22So, you want to think about that.
-
7:22 - 7:25Well I hope you enjoyed
that, my first solo installment, -
7:25 - 7:27and that it made sense, and that it's helping you with your E shape barre chords.
-
7:27 - 7:30I'm planning on doing all of
the other barre chords as well, -
7:30 - 7:33the A shape and C shape, and
those kind of interesting CAGED ones as well. -
7:33 - 7:35But I thought I'd start off
with this and see how much, -
7:35 - 7:37how long it takes me to edit it.
-
7:37 - 7:40I'm a still a bit slow on
the i-movie, but practice makes perfect, hey. -
7:40 - 7:42You all know about that, as I do as well.
-
7:42 - 7:48So, hope you have fun, and I'll, I always
kind of get stuttery at the end. -
7:48 - 7:52It's really funny. Take care of yourselves
and I'll see you soon. Bye Bye. -
7:52 - 7:57There's the t-shirt close up, for
any of you that missed it. -
7:57 - 8:01(Tassie devil singing.)
