Miscellaneous Myths: Hades and Persephone

  • Not Synced
Okay, let´s not kid ourselves here
  • Not Synced
relationships in greek mythology are almost unilaterally
  • Not Synced
    really bad
  • Not Synced
Zeus and Hera get some flag for Zeus´ non-stop adultering
  • Not Synced
    with extremely unwilling mortals
  • Not Synced
and Hera subsequently punishing the innocent mortals involved
  • Not Synced
but that´s got NOTHING on the story of their actual marriage
  • Not Synced
which I will not be recounting here
  • Not Synced
because it´s so far fron consensual
  • Not Synced
there is rally no way for me to be funny about it
  • Not Synced
and "far from consensual" is a recurring theme in the mythos
  • Not Synced
Zeus, Poseidon and Appollo especially tend to
  • Not Synced
default to kidnapping when a pretty mortal
  • Not Synced
    catches their eye
  • Not Synced
sometimes combined with their whole devine shapeshifting dealio
  • Not Synced
to trick or coerce these mortals into banging
  • Not Synced
    If the mortal is lucky
  • Not Synced
    they survive the process
  • Not Synced
and gain some superpowers or kick off a lineage of heroes
  • Not Synced
    if not
  • Not Synced
    they usually die horribly
  • Not Synced
SOme of Appollos famous lovers died tragically
  • Not Synced
after a fulfilling personal relationship with him
  • Not Synced
but most of them died tragically trying to outrun him
  • Not Synced
That is straight up fYoshi sound and everybody knows it!
  • Not Synced
Check almost any olympian gods list of lovers
  • Not Synced
and you´ll usually find at least one character
  • Not Synced
who super did´nt wanna be on that list
  • Not Synced
    Yes
  • Not Synced
    Even your favorites
  • Not Synced
    Yes
  • Not Synced
    Even olympian softboy Dionysus
  • Not Synced
And i will be the first to admit
  • Not Synced
that i gloss over a lot of this stuff
  • Not Synced
    in my videos
  • Not Synced
    And i do that
  • Not Synced
because it makes me incredibly uncomfortable
  • Not Synced
    Can anybody blame me?!
  • Not Synced
It´s not like i´m the only one!
  • Not Synced
I grew up with a freakin picture book
  • Not Synced
that told me Zeus was a cool guy
  • Not Synced
who had cool kids that did cool stuff
  • Not Synced
I watched a disney movie about these people!
  • Not Synced
i don´t have an easy time reconciling the fact that these shining heroic figures
  • Not Synced
    that inspired incredible stories
  • Not Synced
    were characterized as absolutely garbage
  • Not Synced
    in several very key ways
  • Not Synced
and when i do talk about that stuff
  • Not Synced
it feels disingenuous to talk about anything else
  • Not Synced
as if that first thing isn´t very much a deal-breaker
  • Not Synced
for finding the characters heroic or compelling
  • Not Synced
    Basically every modern retelling or
  • Not Synced
    reimagining of greek mythology
  • Not Synced
heavily sanitizes the stories in one way or another
  • Not Synced
The greek pantheon is given the same treatment
  • Not Synced
    as most beloved problematic celebrities
  • Not Synced
We love it for the stories it gave us
  • Not Synced
and we pretend not to notice the part
  • Not Synced
where it won´t stop assaulting underage fans
  • Not Synced
Because that behaviour doesn´t fit the image
  • Not Synced
    we have of it
  • Not Synced
And that´s because we, as a collective audience,
  • Not Synced
are primed to think of gods as good guys
  • Not Synced
    And good guys don´t
  • Not Synced
    do that kind of thing
  • Not Synced
    that would make them
  • Not Synced
    Bad Guys
  • Not Synced
And that is excactly why only one greek god
  • Not Synced
    gets consistently held responsible for
  • Not Synced
    these problematic behaviours
  • Not Synced
    None other than Hades:
  • Not Synced
Lord of the dead and unjustified satan analog
  • Not Synced
    most of our cultural bises,
  • Not Synced
which come from a pop-culture understanding of
  • Not Synced
    christianity
  • Not Synced
which is the same source for the
  • Not Synced
"gods are necessarily a good thing"
  • Not Synced
    our modern audience starts of
  • Not Synced
    primed to hate this guy
  • Not Synced
    Lord of the Underworld?
  • Not Synced
We all know what that means!
  • Not Synced
    Cartooon-Lucifer, King of Hell,
  • Not Synced
token evil divinity, blatent bad guy!
  • Not Synced
    easy -peasy
  • Not Synced
And he kidnapped his wife ?!
  • Not Synced
    What an asshole!
  • Not Synced
No wonder nobody hangs out with this guy
  • Not Synced
    MAn, what a jerk
  • Not Synced
    Anyway
  • Not Synced
    I just love Apollo!
  • Not Synced
He´s the hottest thing since hotness
  • Not Synced
And isn´t it tragic how many of
  • Not Synced
    his ture loves die
  • Not Synced
    ...wonder why that keeps happening
  • Not Synced
When retelling, or reinterpreting ancient stories
  • Not Synced
    in a modern context
  • Not Synced
we almost always end up cherrypicking the parts that make the most sense
  • Not Synced
to our modern worldview and sensibilities
  • Not Synced
and working around the parts that
  • Not Synced
suffer from the worst parts of the
  • Not Synced
    culture clash
  • Not Synced
Ancient greek was pretty cool about a lot of stuff
  • Not Synced
    but women for example
  • Not Synced
    were not on that list
  • Not Synced
    so from the modern perspective
  • Not Synced
when we look back at these original tellings
  • Not Synced
it´s very difficult to see Zeus doing his thing
  • Not Synced
    and conclude anithing other
  • Not Synced
than that the King of the gods
  • Not Synced
    is an ??? serial r*pist
  • Not Synced
who leaves a trail of shadowed lives
  • Not Synced
and bastard children in his wake
  • Not Synced
and this pantheon is a f*cking nightmare
  • Not Synced
But that is not the perspective
  • Not Synced
a contmeporary athenian would have had
  • Not Synced
    it´s not the impact
  • Not Synced
    contemporary storytellers would have
  • Not Synced
    wanted to produce
  • Not Synced
and it is NOT the image most
  • Not Synced
modern writers want to attach to their
  • Not Synced
skyfather of the gods hero character
  • Not Synced
the idea that gods are supposed to be good
  • Not Synced
    is coparatively new
  • Not Synced
    For the ancient greeks
  • Not Synced
gods were a reflection rather of what was true
  • Not Synced
than what was ideal or morally right
  • Not Synced
Ancient greece was terrible to women
  • Not Synced
so that was reflectet in the gods
  • Not Synced
    But to us
  • Not Synced
    and our prevasive pop-culture christianity
  • Not Synced
    deities and divinity adjacent figures
  • Not Synced
    are more of paragons:
  • Not Synced
idealised representaions of goodness and virtue
  • Not Synced
So, when we try and applie this moralised perspective to the greek gods
  • Not Synced
we get some serious cognitive dissonance
  • Not Synced
so the adaptations usually end up buffing it out
  • Not Synced
    Sure
  • Not Synced
in all but the most squeecky clean versions
  • Not Synced
Zeus is usually still cheating on hera
  • Not Synced
    which from our societal perspective
  • Not Synced
Is typically seen as a much more forgivable crime
  • Not Synced
Especially if you also rewrite Hera
  • Not Synced
to be as deliberately unlikebly as possible
  • Not Synced
    + coughing*
  • Not Synced
    The Romans
  • Not Synced
    but most of Zeus trysts
  • Not Synced
get rwritten as affairs of the heart
  • Not Synced
because those are almost universally seen as
  • Not Synced
    significantly less bad
  • Not Synced
    than the non-consentual altenative
  • Not Synced
a distinction thaat did not exist in ancient greece
  • Not Synced
among other thing acnient greek art
  • Not Synced
used a lot of stock poses to signify major story beats
  • Not Synced
and there was literally no distinction
  • Not Synced
between the stock pose for kidnapping
  • Not Synced
    and for marriage
  • Not Synced
    same result, same concept
  • Not Synced
what registers as an uforgivable crime
  • Not Synced
    to our eyes
  • Not Synced
wasn´t even recognised in the culture it came from
  • Not Synced
this specific culture clash is pretty significant
  • Not Synced
which is why this is the part that mostly
  • Not Synced
gets ignored, sanitized, or otherwise rewritten
  • Not Synced
    for modern audiences
  • Not Synced
    i mean unless you´re Hades
  • Not Synced
    because fuck him, right?
  • Not Synced
We already hate that guy on principle!
  • Not Synced
There´s no need to clean up
  • Not Synced
his image so a modern audience will like him
  • Not Synced
In fact, maybe it´s bette if
  • Not Synced
we make him deliberately worse !
  • Not Synced
Just so people know who they should be rooting against !
  • Not Synced
So, with that lengthy and spicy
  • Not Synced
    preamble out of the way
  • Not Synced
    Let´s talk about
  • Not Synced
    Hades and
