-
2:49 - 2:52Claron McFadden: The human voice:
-
2:52 - 2:55mysterious, spontaneous,
-
2:55 - 2:57primal.
-
2:57 - 2:59For me, the human voice
-
2:59 - 3:02is the vessel on which all emotions travel --
-
3:02 - 3:05except perhaps jealousy.
-
3:06 - 3:08And the breath,
-
3:08 - 3:11the breath is the captain of that vessel.
-
3:12 - 3:15A child is born,
-
3:15 - 3:18takes its first breath --
-
3:18 - 3:25(Breathing)
-
3:25 - 3:29and we behold the wondrous beauty
-
3:29 - 3:32of vocal expression --
-
3:32 - 3:35mysterious, spontaneous
-
3:35 - 3:37and primal.
-
3:38 - 3:41A few years ago, I did a meditation retreat in Thailand.
-
3:41 - 3:43I wanted a place
-
3:43 - 3:46that I would have total silence
-
3:46 - 3:48and total solitude.
-
3:48 - 3:51I spent two weeks at this retreat
-
3:51 - 3:53in my own little hut --
-
3:53 - 3:56no music, no nothing, sounds of nature --
-
3:56 - 3:58trying to find the essence
-
3:58 - 4:00of concentration,
-
4:00 - 4:02being in the moment.
-
4:02 - 4:04On my last day,
-
4:04 - 4:07the woman who looked after the place,
-
4:07 - 4:09she came and we spoke for a minute,
-
4:09 - 4:12and then she said to me,
-
4:12 - 4:14"Would you sing something for me?"
-
4:14 - 4:17And I thought, but this is a place of total quiet and silence.
-
4:17 - 4:20I can't make noise.
-
4:20 - 4:23She said, "Please, sing for me."
-
4:24 - 4:26So I closed my eyes,
-
4:26 - 4:29I took breath
-
4:29 - 4:33and the first thing that came up and out
-
4:33 - 4:37was "Summertime," Porgy and Bess.
-
4:37 - 4:42♫ Summertime and the living is easy ♫
-
4:42 - 4:45♫ Fish are jumping and the cotton is high ♫
-
4:45 - 4:49♫ Oh, your daddy's rich and your ma is good-looking ♫
-
4:49 - 4:51♫ So hush little baby ♫
-
4:51 - 4:54♫ Don't you cry ♫
-
4:54 - 4:57And I opened my eyes,
-
4:57 - 5:00and I saw that she had her eyes closed.
-
5:00 - 5:02And after a moment, she opened her eyes
-
5:02 - 5:05and she looked at me and she said,
-
5:05 - 5:08"It's like meditation."
-
5:08 - 5:10And in that moment I understood
-
5:10 - 5:13that everything I had gone to Thailand to look for,
-
5:13 - 5:15to search for,
-
5:15 - 5:19I had it already in my singing --
-
5:19 - 5:23the calm, but alertness,
-
5:23 - 5:26the focus, but awareness,
-
5:26 - 5:29and being totally in the moment.
-
5:30 - 5:32When you're totally in the moment,
-
5:32 - 5:34when I'm totally in the moment,
-
5:34 - 5:36the vessel of expression is open.
-
5:36 - 5:38The emotions can flow
-
5:38 - 5:40from me to you
-
5:40 - 5:42and back.
-
5:42 - 5:45Extremely profound experience.
-
5:46 - 5:48There's a piece by a composer,
-
5:48 - 5:51an American composer called John Cage.
-
5:51 - 5:53It's called "Aria."
-
5:53 - 5:55It was written for an amazing singer
-
5:55 - 5:58called Cathy Berberian.
-
5:58 - 6:01And the thing about this piece that's so special --
-
6:01 - 6:03if you see it behind me --
-
6:03 - 6:06it's not notated in any way.
-
6:07 - 6:10No notes, no flats, no sharps.
-
6:10 - 6:13But it's a kind of structure,
-
6:13 - 6:15and the singer within this structure
-
6:15 - 6:17has total freedom
-
6:17 - 6:20to be creative, spontaneous.
-
6:20 - 6:22For example,
-
6:22 - 6:24there are different colors
-
6:24 - 6:28and each color gets a different type of singing --
-
6:28 - 6:32pop, country and western, opera, jazz --
-
6:32 - 6:35and you just have to be consistent with that color.
-
6:36 - 6:38You see there are different lines:
-
6:38 - 6:40you choose in your own tempo in your own way
-
6:40 - 6:42to follow the line,
-
6:42 - 6:46but you must respect it, more or less.
-
6:46 - 6:48And these little dots,
-
6:48 - 6:50these represent
-
6:50 - 6:53a sort of sound
-
6:53 - 6:56that's not a vocal, not a lyrical way
-
6:56 - 6:58of expressing the voice.
-
6:58 - 7:01Using the body -- it could be sneezing, it could be coughing,
-
7:01 - 7:04it could be animals -- (cough) exactly --
-
7:04 - 7:07clapping, whatever.
-
7:07 - 7:09And there's different text.
-
7:09 - 7:11There's Armenian, Russian,
-
7:11 - 7:14French, English, Italian.
-
7:14 - 7:17So within this structure one is free.
-
7:17 - 7:21To me, this piece is an ode to the voice
-
7:21 - 7:24because it's mysterious -- as we can see --
-
7:26 - 7:29it's quite spontaneous,
-
7:29 - 7:32and it's primal.
-
7:32 - 7:34So I would like to share this piece with you.
-
7:34 - 7:37It's "Aria" of John Cage.
-
7:44 - 7:54(Singing)
-
8:23 - 8:25♫ No other way ♫
-
8:25 - 8:28♫ Dans l'espace, so help ♫
-
8:28 - 8:33(Singing)
-
9:33 - 9:35♫ To have the fruits ♫
-
9:35 - 9:41(Singing)
-
10:17 - 10:33(Applause)
