-
Not Synced
For years I have been working
on a simple idea.
-
Not Synced
For humanity to take its next step ahead,
-
Not Synced
we need together across borders
to solve global issues.
-
Not Synced
In the modern world,
-
Not Synced
no wall or border
can protect us from crisis.
-
Not Synced
We have no other choice but to unite,
-
Not Synced
and we need to do it fast.
-
Not Synced
In 2016, I was devasted
by the UK's decision
-
Not Synced
to leave the European Union.
-
Not Synced
I'm French, and for me the EU is a symbol
of a more open and global society.
-
Not Synced
But suddenly by beliefs were shattered
-
Not Synced
and I wasn't alone in feeling this way.
-
Not Synced
My partner Andrea who's Italian,
-
Not Synced
and Damian, a German friend,
-
Not Synced
also felt the shock of seeing
the world turning inward.
-
Not Synced
We realized that despite being
from three different countries,
-
Not Synced
we witnessed the same challenges:
-
Not Synced
migration flows being dealt with
in an inhuman manner,
-
Not Synced
climate change
-
Not Synced
and high youth unemployment.
-
Not Synced
And we also had the same hopes
and dreams in our everyday lives.
-
Not Synced
We also realized that to solve
European issues,
-
Not Synced
the outdated model of always putting
national interests first had to go.
-
Not Synced
So we decided to act.
-
Not Synced
For a few months,
-
Not Synced
we worked on the idea of launching Volt,
-
Not Synced
the first pan-European political movement.
-
Not Synced
And then, naturally, we told
our Facebook friends,
-
Not Synced
and a lot of them responded saying
they were up for the challenge
-
Not Synced
and wanted to help.
-
Not Synced
People started holding small
community meetings in parks,
-
Not Synced
universities and pubs
-
Not Synced
to discuss their common future
-
Not Synced
and share their solutions
to the continent's biggest problems.
-
Not Synced
We mobilized tens of thousands of people
across 28 European countries
-
Not Synced
Two years in, Damian was elected
to the European parliament
-
Not Synced
on the campaign run
by volunteers across borders
-
Not Synced
on the idea that we are stronger together.
-
Not Synced
We showed that by collaborating
across borders,
-
Not Synced
by uniting and acting as one.
-
Not Synced
We could start changing how people think.
-
Not Synced
We were the first ones to attempt
something of this scale
-
Not Synced
and to succeed.
-
Not Synced
Despite this,
-
Not Synced
after the European elections in May 2019,
-
Not Synced
Andrea and I looked into each other's eyes
-
Not Synced
and asked that frank question
that you never want to ask
-
Not Synced
once you have worked two years towards
something that actually worked out.
-
Not Synced
"Is this enough?"
-
Not Synced
No, it wasn't.
-
Not Synced
We knew that today's urgent challenges
are not just European by global.
-
Not Synced
We also knew that we couldn't
even attempt to solve them
-
Not Synced
by only focusing on Europe,
-
Not Synced
a continent that represents less
than 10 percent of the world population.
-
Not Synced
The underlying issue
is that the way we see the world
-
Not Synced
and the way the world works
are fundamentally wrong.
-
Not Synced
In the span on two generations,
-
Not Synced
the world has changed more
than in the previous 20,000 years.
-
Not Synced
We can land on the moon,
-
Not Synced
we can wake up in Shanghai
and go to bed in New York.
-
Not Synced
We have access to a huge amount
of information all the time, everywhere.
-
Not Synced
But we still see the world
as our immediate vicinity.
-
Not Synced
But issues like COVID-19,
-
Not Synced
climate change,
-
Not Synced
migration,
-
Not Synced
fiscal justice
-
Not Synced
or human rights
-
Not Synced
mean that we need to think
and unite beyond national borders.
-
Not Synced
A global approach is needed to solve them.
-
Not Synced
Countries need to collaborate,
-
Not Synced
share resources, information
and solutions.
-
Not Synced
It's not just the right thing to do
-
Not Synced
but it's also the smart one.
-
Not Synced
So in the weeks following
Damian's election,
-
Not Synced
Andrea and I decided
that we would create a global movement
-
Not Synced
to unite people beyond borders
-
Not Synced
and solve those issues
that concern us all.
-
Not Synced
We called it NOW! --
-
Not Synced
because we're not very creative,
-
Not Synced
and because it needs to happen now.
-
Not Synced
So I know that going beyond national
borders is not the easiest thing to do,
-
Not Synced
so here's the framework
that has been guiding our work.
-
Not Synced
I call it "think, unite and leap forward."
-
Not Synced
First we need to change the way
we think about the world.
-
Not Synced
Whether we like it or not,
-
Not Synced
we already live in a globalized world.
-
Not Synced
We need to stop thinking
within national frameworks
-
Not Synced
and start thinking globally.
-
Not Synced
Take for example
how we think about taxation.
-
Not Synced
Multinational companies
like Facebook or Amazon
-
Not Synced
already operate across borders,
-
Not Synced
but they pay very little taxes
in very few countries,
-
Not Synced
because we think of them
within national frameworks.
-
Not Synced
And as a result,
-
Not Synced
we lack a global tax system.
-
Not Synced
Due to this,
-
Not Synced
countries are deprived of at least
five-hundred billion dollars annually.
-
Not Synced
Five-hundred billion dollars.
-
Not Synced
To put it in perspective,
-
Not Synced
with half of that amount of money,
-
Not Synced
we could put an end
to global hunger for one year.
-
Not Synced
But we don't because of the way
we think about the world.
-
Not Synced
At NOW! we want to change this.
-
Not Synced
We connect people
from all across the world
-
Not Synced
who discuss, work together and understand
-
Not Synced
that global is the new normal
-
Not Synced
and that they have more in common
than what separates them.
-
Not Synced
We host weekly events
-
Not Synced
in which we discuss topics
such as LGBT rights,
-
Not Synced
pandemics,
-
Not Synced
fiscal justice
-
Not Synced
or mental health.
-
Not Synced
We break down those global challenges
-
Not Synced
to see how the impact people
in various parts of the world.
-
Not Synced
And our members have
already shown a global thinking,
-
Not Synced
actively rallying their governments
to solve those issues,
-
Not Synced
like [entering] a fair distribution
of vaccines across the world.
-
Not Synced
Second, after changing the way we think,
-
Not Synced
we need to unite beyond borders.
-
Not Synced
This way we can make governments
act on global issues.
-
Not Synced
Take the example of the erosion
of democracy in Hong Kong.
-
Not Synced
China has systematically cracked down
on rights, democracy and freedoms
-
Not Synced
but countries have barely responded
to protect Hong-Kongers.
-
Not Synced
And I don't mean weak
statements of condemnation
-
Not Synced
that won't lead to any actual change,
-
Not Synced
but proper responses such as sanctions.
-
Not Synced
That's why at NOW!,
-
Not Synced
a couple of weeks back,
-
Not Synced
we launched a campaign to demand
that democracies rally
-
Not Synced
to be able to stand up
meaningfully to China.
-
Not Synced
And to get there attention,
-
Not Synced
we started hosting weekly protests
in front of Chinese embassies.
-
Not Synced
Within a couple of weeks,
-
Not Synced
we engaged more than
a million people online.
-
Not Synced
Our hope is that by uniting
and mobilizing people across borders,
-
Not Synced
we will be able
to successfully lobby nations
-
Not Synced
into imposing coordinating
sanctions on China.
-
Not Synced
Finally, we must have
the courage to leap forward
-
Not Synced
to create the world of tomorrow.
-
Not Synced
We need a system of governance
that works for us all across the world.
-
Not Synced
And while some supernational institutions
like the United Nations exist,
-
Not Synced
their enforcement mechanisms
are extremely limited.
-
Not Synced
Citizens cannot participate
-
Not Synced
and national interests often prevail.
-
Not Synced
And on the national level,
-
Not Synced
political parties are bound
by electoral timetables and borders,
-
Not Synced
which means that they cannot operate
in a coordinated global manner.
-
Not Synced
Policy-making,
-
Not Synced
governance and politics
need to stretch further.
-
Not Synced
Take the example of the response
to the COVID-19 pandemic.
-
Not Synced
Countries have formed and incredibly
shortsighted approach to the pandemic.
-
Not Synced
They haven't collaborated
when it comes to protective equipment,
-
Not Synced
vaccines or medicines.
-
Not Synced
At NOW! we launched a campaign
-
Not Synced
demanding that the World Health
Organization ensures
-
Not Synced
that health workers across the world,
-
Not Synced
regardless of their nationalities,
-
Not Synced
get priority access to future
COVID-19 vaccines.
-
Not Synced
We leveraged a network of doctors
on social media to raise awareness
-
Not Synced
and started a petition
targeted at the WHO.
-
Not Synced
For two weeks,
-
Not Synced
our members spread the word
digitally and on the streets,
-
Not Synced
and then we got a response
from the director-general of the WHO
-
Not Synced
welcoming our campaign,
-
Not Synced
re-emphasizing that the power to do so
lies within member states
-
Not Synced
but committing to working
with them in that direction.
-
Not Synced
And look, this was a very nice letter
-
Not Synced
but it was completely pointless.
-
Not Synced
The WHO cannot act
meaningfully on this issue.
-
Not Synced
But the point is,
-
Not Synced
a United Nations agency should
be able to act meaningfully,
-
Not Synced
should be able to create binding policies
-
Not Synced
and implement them
-
Not Synced
when faced with a global threat.
-
Not Synced
Right now,
-
Not Synced
the most we can hope for
-
Not Synced
is for some world leaders
to hear us scream
-
Not Synced
and decide to do the right thing.
-
Not Synced
This cannot continue.
-
Not Synced
In the globalized world,
-
Not Synced
we need a true, democratic,
accountable global system of governance.
-
Not Synced
And that's also what
we're working towards,
-
Not Synced
but I know that global governance
will not happen overnight.
-
Not Synced
For this we need people to push
their governments
-
Not Synced
to act in a global manner,
-
Not Synced
to show that collaboration
leads to better results.
-
Not Synced
We need to prove the case
-
Not Synced
before we can change
the way the world works.
-
Not Synced
So this is my framework:
-
Not Synced
think beyond national borders,
-
Not Synced
unite across the world
-
Not Synced
and leap forward to make sure
that the world actually works as one.
-
Not Synced
And I know it is easier said than done,
-
Not Synced
but it is doable.
-
Not Synced
Take our case as an example.
-
Not Synced
NOW! was only launched
on the first of January 2020
-
Not Synced
but already counts thousands of members
-
Not Synced
in more than 100 countries.
-
Not Synced
We are beginning to see
-
Not Synced
that it is possible
to unite beyond borders,
-
Not Synced
that it is within our reach.
-
Not Synced
And we're not special,
-
Not Synced
nor am I in any way.
-
Not Synced
I don't have any cool skills,
-
Not Synced
and the thought of giving
this talk terrified me.
-
Not Synced
But I am testing different ways
to effect change on a global scale
-
Not Synced
because I know that national mindsets
-
Not Synced
and national frameworks have to leave
room for something bigger,
-
Not Synced
for something better.
-
Not Synced
My hope is that within my lifetime,
-
Not Synced
I will see what living
as one world actually means;
-
Not Synced
that by uniting,
-
Not Synced
we will be able to save our democracy,
-
Not Synced
to protect the environment,
-
Not Synced
to save lives by sharing vaccines,
-
Not Synced
to create safer routes for migration,
-
Not Synced
among many other achievements.
-
Not Synced
I don't know whether
I have the one solution.
-
Not Synced
No one does.
-
Not Synced
I don't know whether
NOW! will be successful
-
Not Synced
in achieving these goals,
-
Not Synced
but this is not the point.
-
Not Synced
The point is that you should take action
to effect change on the global scale.
-
Not Synced
My hope is that many of you will
start to work together across borders,
-
Not Synced
that you will create and innovate new ways
-
Not Synced
for the world to be truly one.
-
Not Synced
Because yes,
-
Not Synced
we are stronger together,
-
Not Synced
so what are we waiting for?
-
Not Synced
Thank you.
