Dancing with life, between Peru and New York | Nelida Silva |TEDxAmazonia

  • 0:23 - 0:24
    (Peruvian music)
  • 4:56 - 4:59
    (Applause)
  • 5:03 - 5:09
I’m not sure about when dance and movement
turned into a way of life.
  • 5:12 - 5:15
I think it was when I learned to walk.
  • 5:16 - 5:20
I was born and raised in a small village
    in the Andes of Peru.
  • 5:24 - 5:30
    It’s called Llamellin, it's located
at 3300 m above sea level
  • 5:34 - 5:39
and is about a 16 hour drive from Lima.
  • 5:42 - 5:47
I grew up with the colors and sounds
    of that village,
  • 5:49 - 5:53
    and they were very different
    from what we call civilization.
  • 5:54 - 6:00
When I was a child, we had no electricity
and many other things, there was no TV,
  • 6:03 - 6:09
but no plastic bottles or trash floating
in the rivers or spread on our fields.
  • 6:16 - 6:20
And I did what many young people
from villages just like mine did,
  • 6:23 - 6:26
    we emigrated to big cities.
  • 6:30 - 6:35
We went to cities whose colors and sounds
were different from those we knew.
  • 6:38 - 6:41
First I went to Lima and then to New York.
  • 6:42 - 6:47
But my passion for dance and music
kept me connected to my people,
  • 6:51 - 6:54
my traditions, my roots and rituals.
  • 6:56 - 7:01
So I stopped living in my village
but it kept on living inside me.
  • 7:02 - 7:06
After living for 15 years in New York,
    I returned to Llamellin
  • 7:08 - 7:11
    to fulfill my dream
    that of being the patron
  • 7:13 - 7:15
of our local one week festival.
  • 7:15 - 7:20
It’s a festival full of traditions
and rituals, we keep to this day,
  • 7:20 - 7:24
despite the fact that we own TVs now.
  • 7:24 - 7:29
    A filmmaker from New York
    accompanied me in this trip
  • 7:29 - 7:35
and made a documentary about this
called “I come from the Andes.”
  • 7:36 - 7:42
After living for 20 years in New York,
I was back in my village, Llamellin
  • 7:46 - 7:51
this time ready to share with my people
some of the things I knew and received.
  • 7:52 - 7:56
I want to help the women in my region
to improve their standards of living
  • 8:01 - 8:07
their economy, and I want to teach them
how to start their own businesses
  • 8:09 - 8:11
    and get microcredit.
  • 8:12 - 8:15
This way, they would be the ones
  • 8:15 - 8:18
    who can lead their children
    to a better life.
  • 8:19 - 8:22
I’d like to leave you with a message:
  • 8:22 - 8:26
Don’t let those who don’t dream
    take your dreams away!
  • 8:27 - 8:28
    Thank you.
  • 8:28 - 8:29
    (Applause)
