    I study the internet and journalism
  • 0:12 - 0:16
    and how we as citizens receive
    information about the world.

    In the olden days
    when people got information,
  • 0:20 - 0:23
    it was mostly decided by people.
  • 0:23 - 0:26
    There were humans that decided
    what we needed to know.
  • 0:26 - 0:30
    So, when we opened the newspaper or turned
    on the evening news, it was a person that
  • 0:30 - 0:33
    decided what we heard and saw.
  • 0:33 - 0:37
    The result of that is
    that we all knew similar things.
  • 0:38 - 0:41
    Now the internet has changed everything.
  • 0:41 - 0:44
    When you go online,
    when you open an application,
  • 0:44 - 0:47
    what you see is determined not by a person
  • 0:47 - 0:49
    but by a machine.
  • 0:50 - 0:52
    And this is awesome in a lot of ways.

    It allows you to use Google Maps,
    it allows you to order food online,
  • 0:57 - 1:02
    it allows you to connect with friends
    around the world and share information.

    But there are aspects of this machine that
    we need to think really carefully about
  • 1:08 - 1:12
    because they determine
    the information that we all receive
  • 1:12 - 1:15
    as citizens in a society
    and in a democracy.
  • 1:15 - 1:17
    So, when you open up an app
  • 1:17 - 1:21
    and you’re shown a picture
    in your Snapchat feed,
  • 1:21 - 1:24
    all of that information
    is determined by this machine
  • 1:24 - 1:28
    and that machine
    is driven by the incentives
  • 1:28 - 1:31
    of the company that owns the website
    or owns the application.
  • 1:33 - 1:35
    And the incentive is for you to spend
  • 1:35 - 1:38
    as much time as possible
    inside that application.
  • 1:39 - 1:42
    So, they do things that make you feel
    very good about being there.
  • 1:42 - 1:44
    They allow people to like your photos,
  • 1:45 - 1:48
    they show you content
    that they think you want to see
  • 1:48 - 1:51
    that will either make you
    really happy or really angry,
  • 1:51 - 1:54
    that will get an emotional response
    from you to keep you there.
  • 1:54 - 1:58
    That is because they want to show you
    as many ads as possible when you’re there
  • 1:58 - 2:00
    because that is their business model.
  • 2:01 - 2:04
    They’re also taking that same opportunity
    of you being in their app
  • 2:04 - 2:06
    to collect data about you.
  • 2:06 - 2:12
    And they use these data to create detailed
    profiles of your life and your behaviour,
  • 2:12 - 2:17
    and these profiles can then be used
    to target more ads back to you.
  • 2:17 - 2:20
    And that then determines
    what you see as well.
  • 2:21 - 2:25
    But all of this isn’t just about
    the business model of these companies,
  • 2:26 - 2:28
    it actually has an impact on our democracy
  • 2:29 - 2:34
    because what we each see on the internet
    is highly customized to us,
  • 2:35 - 2:41
    to what we like, to what we believe,
    to what we want to see or want to believe.
  • 2:42 - 2:43
    And that means that as a society,
  • 2:44 - 2:48
    we no longer all have
    a shared set of knowledge
  • 2:48 - 2:51
    which is hard for a democracy
    that requires us to work together
  • 2:51 - 2:55
    and know the same things to make
    decisions about our lives together.
  • 2:55 - 2:57
    When we all know different things
  • 2:57 - 3:01
    and we’re all being siloed into
    our own little bubbles of information,
  • 3:02 - 3:05
    it’s incredibility difficult for us
    to get along with one another.
  • 3:05 - 3:08
    We have no shared experience
    or shared knowledge.
  • 3:08 - 3:13
    So, I think it’s really important that we
    think critically about the information we
  • 3:13 - 3:17
    receive online and about the companies
    and structures that determine
  • 3:17 - 3:19
    what we see on the internet.
