Adding three digit numbers with regrouping | Addition and subtraction | Arithmetic | Khan Academy

  • 0:00 - 0:00
  • 0:00 - 0:03
    We have three different addition
    problems right over here.
  • 0:03 - 0:06
And what I want you to do so
you get the hang of things
  • 0:06 - 0:09
    is to pause the video
and try them on your own.
  • 0:09 - 0:11
But as you do them, I want
you to really keep in mind
  • 0:11 - 0:15
    and think about what the
    carrying actually means.
  • 0:15 - 0:17
    So I assume you've
    tried it on your own.
  • 0:17 - 0:21
    Now I'll work through
    them with you.
  • 0:21 - 0:22
So we have 9 plus 6.
  • 0:22 - 0:24
    9 ones plus 6 ones.
  • 0:24 - 0:26
    Well 9 plus 6 is 15.
  • 0:26 - 0:29
    Well, we can write the
    5 in the ones place,
  • 0:29 - 0:31
and then we can carry the one.
  • 0:31 - 0:32
But what did we just do?
  • 0:32 - 0:33
    W.hat does this 1 represent?
  • 0:33 - 0:37
Well, we put it in the tens
    place-- one 10 represents 10.
  • 0:37 - 0:41
So all we've said is that 9
plus 6 is equal to 10 plus 5.
  • 0:41 - 0:45
Is equal to one 10 plus
5, which is equal to 15.
  • 0:45 - 0:50
Now, in the tens place, we have
    1 plus 0 plus 9 which is 10..
  • 0:50 - 0:56
So we can write 0 and carry
    the 1 1 plus 0 plus 9 is 10.
  • 0:56 - 0:58
Now what does that really mean?
  • 0:58 - 1:03
Well this is 1 ten plus 0 tens
plus 9 tens, which is 10 tens.
  • 1:03 - 1:05
    10 tens is 100.
  • 1:05 - 1:08
    Or another way to think
    about 100, it's 1 hundred,
  • 1:08 - 1:10
    and 0 tens.
  • 1:10 - 1:12
    So that's all that
    carrying represents.
  • 1:12 - 1:15
So now we have a 1,
    plus a 7, plus a 9.
  • 1:15 - 1:17
That is going to be 17.
  • 1:17 - 1:20
Now we have to remind ourselves,
this is in the hundreds place.
  • 1:20 - 1:23
    This is actually 1 hundred
plus 7 hundred plus 9 hundred
  • 1:23 - 1:25
    17 hundred.
  • 1:25 - 1:28
    Or 1 thousand, 7 hundred.
  • 1:28 - 1:30
    And of course we
    have this 5 here.
  • 1:30 - 1:32
    And we are done.
  • 1:32 - 1:35
    Now let's try to
    tackle this one.
  • 1:35 - 1:37
    Now the reason why
    I wrote it that way
  • 1:37 - 1:40
is to make sure that we
    remind ourselves to align
  • 1:40 - 1:42
    the proper places under
    the appropriate places.
  • 1:42 - 1:49
So this we rewrite as-- let me
do that same green color-- we
  • 1:49 - 1:53
    could rewrite this
    as 373 plus-- we
  • 1:53 - 1:55
    want to write the ones
    place under the ones place,
  • 1:55 - 1:58
    and the tens place
    under the tens place,
  • 1:58 - 2:01
    so that we're adding
    the appropriate values.
  • 2:01 - 2:03
    So 3 plus 8 is 11.
  • 2:03 - 2:06
The 1 in the ones place,
and the 1 in the tens place.
  • 2:06 - 2:08
    10 plus 1 is 11.
  • 2:08 - 2:10
    1 plus 7 is 8.
  • 2:10 - 2:12
    8 plus 8 is 16.
  • 2:12 - 2:14
    This is actually 16 tens.
  • 2:14 - 2:16
    So let me just
    write down the 16.
  • 2:16 - 2:17
    What is 16 tens?
  • 2:17 - 2:18
    Well, that's 160.
  • 2:18 - 2:21
    So this 6 is a 60, and
    then I have a hundred.
  • 2:21 - 2:23
    1 plus 3 is 4.
  • 2:23 - 2:25
    But these are actually
    hundreds, so it's 4 hundreds.
  • 2:25 - 2:28
    So we get 461.
  • 2:28 - 2:32
    Now finally, 9 plus 3 is 12.
  • 2:32 - 2:34
    2 ones, and 1 ten.
  • 2:34 - 2:37
    12 is the same
    thing as 10 plus 2.
  • 2:37 - 2:42
    Now in the tens place,
    1 plus 4 plus 9 is 14.
  • 2:42 - 2:44
    So we write the 4,
    and carry the 1.
  • 2:44 - 2:48
    But remind ourselves this
    is actually 10 plus 40
  • 2:48 - 2:50
    plus 90, which is 140.
  • 2:50 - 2:54
    Which is the same
    thing as 40 plus 100.
  • 2:54 - 2:56
    And then 1 plus 1 plus 2 is 4.
  • 2:56 - 2:57
But this is the hundreds place.
  • 2:57 - 3:00
So this is actually 1 hundred,
plus 1 hundred, plus 2 hundred,
  • 3:00 - 3:02
    or 4 hundred.
  • 3:02 - 3:04
    And we're done.
