Kendall Speaks
-
0:02 - 0:04Anything that you dream,
just don't give up on it. -
0:04 - 0:07Never give up on it,
because it can happen. -
0:07 - 0:09I never would've thought
that when I was six, -
0:09 - 0:14and stepped onto the ice,
that it would turn into this dream, -
0:14 - 0:17and like this, this thing that
I love so much. -
0:17 - 0:44(Music)
-
0:44 - 0:46When I was two days old
I stopped breathing -
0:46 - 0:48and my mom and dad were panicked.
-
0:48 - 0:52The doctors didn't know why,
but it was actually -
0:52 - 0:55that I had really really
bad acid reflux. -
0:55 - 0:58And I was allergic to my mom's breastmilk,
-
0:58 - 1:01but we didnt' know at the time
because the doctors didn't know -
1:01 - 1:04I was anaphylactic to anything,
because I was only 2 days old. -
1:04 - 1:08And I continued and continued to have
really bad food allergy reactions. -
1:08 - 1:13and eventually, when I was
probably two years old -
1:13 - 1:15they finally did blood testing
and skin testing -
1:15 - 1:20and found out I was anaphylactic
to 95% of all food. -
1:20 - 1:39(Music)
-
1:39 - 1:41When I started skating when I was six,
-
1:41 - 1:45I went to an iceskating class
just because I had convinced my mom -
1:45 - 1:48to take me, and my dad...
-
1:48 - 1:51my dad was kind of, like, skeptical.
-
1:51 - 1:55He was kind of like:
"Well I think you should try it, -
1:55 - 1:58but let's not get crazy,
let's just be careful." -
1:58 - 2:02because he was really worried that
I was going to fall on my stomach -
2:02 - 2:04and hurt my tube or something.
-
2:04 - 2:09Growing up, I can't really imagine
a time when I wasn't allergic. -
2:09 - 2:11It's just been a part of my life.
-
2:11 - 2:15And then when I was 3 1/2,
I got my feeding tube placed, -
2:15 - 2:18because I was failure to thrive,
-
2:18 - 2:24and I was, I think 22-27 pounds
when I was like three years old. -
2:24 - 2:25And they were really worried.
-
2:25 - 2:35(Music)
-
2:35 - 2:38Well, I can eat some things now,
-
2:38 - 2:41and that's why I got the feeding tube,
-
2:41 - 2:45so they put formulas into that
which helped me grow so much -
2:45 - 2:47and kept me alive.
-
2:47 - 2:50And then as I got older, it became harder
because when I wanted to skate, -
2:50 - 2:54I didn't want to have a pump on my back
and have a backpack on. -
2:54 - 2:58So, they told me....
I started doing gravity feeds, -
2:58 - 3:04which is where I hook my tube up
and I pour formula down into my stomach. -
3:04 - 3:06so I did that about four times a day,
-
3:06 - 3:12and so throughout the day, like breakfast,
lunch, dinner and then if I needed extra -
3:12 - 3:16I'll normally need an extra
before school time -
3:16 - 3:19because I'm so exhausted from skating.
-
3:19 - 3:20But after two feeds,
-
3:20 - 3:22I definitely have more energy,
-
3:22 - 3:25it's just like after eating a big meal.
-
3:25 - 3:27And I can eat like the 5% of foods
I'm not allergic to, -
3:27 - 3:34so I can eat chicken, rice,
potatoes, turkey, beef. -
3:34 - 3:36So I can have like
a good amount of things, but -
3:36 - 3:39my favorite thing is potatoes.
-
3:39 - 3:41I eat potatoes in everything,
and I also... -
3:41 - 3:46the only allergen I outgrew
was milk and dairy. -
3:46 - 3:49So I can have chocolate,
and that's my favorite. -
3:49 - 3:51It's my little treat.
-
3:51 - 4:05(Music)
-
4:05 - 4:07A day in the life of Kendall would be:
-
4:07 - 4:11getting up, taking my formula
and my medicines, -
4:11 - 4:15for having my medical situation
to right key to -
4:15 - 4:17and then going to the rink.
-
4:17 - 4:20And skating for a few hours.
-
4:20 - 4:23And then I might have
a vocal lesson after that, -
4:23 - 4:26so, I have to go to my church
and have a vocal lesson. -
4:26 - 4:29And then, normally I have school.
-
4:29 - 4:33'cause I have school
in the afternoons because -
4:33 - 4:36I am home-hospital schooled
through my school district. -
4:36 - 4:40So I'll have school, do lots of homework,
and that's pretty much it. -
4:40 - 4:42And the same thing over again.
-
4:42 - 4:56(Music)
-
4:56 - 4:58I basically...
they've done a lot of studies and -
4:58 - 5:01they're still researching food allergies,
-
5:01 - 5:03because it's growing,
like an epidemic. -
5:03 - 5:09I think it's 15 million Americans with
food allergies at the moment, -
5:09 - 5:12but it's sort of funny because
the things that I eat a lot, -
5:12 - 5:15I tend to not have allergies to,
-
5:15 - 5:19but then one day, you can just wake up
and eat it, and have an allergy. -
5:19 - 5:21I used to have tomato all the time.
-
5:21 - 5:25I would eat tomato sauces
on spaghetti noodles -
5:25 - 5:29or ketchup on french fries,
that type of thing, -
5:29 - 5:33and then one day I had..
I think I was eating like a cheese pizza -
5:33 - 5:38my mom cooked for me,
and there was sauce on it, -
5:38 - 5:40and I just got a really bad reaction,
-
5:40 - 5:44and then ever since then,
when I eat tomato, my lips swell up. -
5:44 - 5:47It's not anaphylactic,
but its a really bad allergy. -
5:47 - 5:59(Music)
-
5:59 - 6:02The reactions are normally the same.
-
6:02 - 6:04There's different types of reactions
to different things, -
6:04 - 6:09like if I am deathly allergic
to peanuts, tree nuts, -
6:09 - 6:14really any kind of nut or seed,
eggs and soy and pork, -
6:14 - 6:19and things like that.
-
6:19 - 6:23So, if I were to ingest that,
or when it comes to nuts, -
6:23 - 6:28even breathing it or touching it,
my lips swell up, my face swells up, -
6:28 - 6:31and the worst part is my throat
swells up. So then I stop breathing, -
6:31 - 6:34and that's what happens many times
-
6:34 - 6:37I've almost lost my life eight times.
-
6:37 - 6:42And it's definitely what
drives me to keep going, -
6:42 - 6:45because it was terrifying.
-
6:45 - 6:48Every time it happens,
it's a different reaction. -
6:48 - 6:53Mainly it's from just breathing
or touching something I'm allergic to. -
6:53 - 7:24(Music)
-
7:24 - 7:28What keeps me going
is definitely my faith. -
7:28 - 7:31On a daily basis, I don't know
-
7:31 - 7:34what I would do without my faith
in God and my family. -
7:34 - 7:37And the support of my friends.
-
7:42 - 7:46(Music)
