How to find meaning when reality hits you | Manisha Koirala | TEDxJaipur
-
0:11 - 0:15There is a well-known quote which says,
-
0:17 - 0:19"Life is what happens to us
-
0:20 - 0:23while we're busy making other plans."
-
0:25 - 0:30It's this unpredictability,
hence, unpreparedness -
0:31 - 0:35what makes life so fragile
yet so beautiful. -
0:37 - 0:38Friends,
-
0:40 - 0:42some 20-25 years ago,
-
0:42 - 0:46I lived a life
that many would only dream of. -
0:47 - 0:50I always wanted to be an acclaimed artist
-
0:50 - 0:53and be at the top of my game.
-
0:54 - 0:57I came from Nepal
and actually managed to be -
0:57 - 1:02a popular and successful actress
in the Indian film industry. -
1:03 - 1:09About 80 odd films
in five different languages, -
1:09 - 1:11multiple awards;
-
1:12 - 1:18to be honest, some quality
and a lot of quantity. -
1:22 - 1:26Everything that I had dreamed of,
in fact, more than what I had dreamed of, -
1:26 - 1:28was happening to me.
-
1:29 - 1:31What I didn't know
-
1:31 - 1:37that while I was in this most heady,
most enjoyable ride ever, -
1:38 - 1:40life had planned something else for me,
-
1:40 - 1:44that I would be thrown into
a whirlwind of things -
1:44 - 1:47where slowly, I'll start to lose it all.
-
1:50 - 1:52Initially, it started subtly,
-
1:52 - 1:58like I signed on for a bad film
which flopped and I got a bad review, -
1:59 - 2:04and then there was another
and another and another, -
2:04 - 2:06but I didn't care
-
2:06 - 2:10because even then, I had some good
directors wanting me in their film, -
2:10 - 2:14so I thought, "Well,
I can always bounce back," -
2:14 - 2:17but that didn't really happen.
-
2:19 - 2:24I had developed an unhealthy lifestyle
-
2:25 - 2:28which was attracting wrong company.
-
2:31 - 2:37Restlessly, I was moving
from one bad relationship to another one. -
2:37 - 2:39I was in a mess,
-
2:40 - 2:43and I was in denial.
-
2:45 - 2:49I fell flat on my face
when my marriage broke, -
2:50 - 2:57and soon after, I was diagnosed
with an aggressive form of cancer. -
2:59 - 3:03Even my cancer was of an extreme kind.
-
3:05 - 3:09Let me give you a tip of the iceberg
-
3:09 - 3:15of how gruesome my treatment was,
my chemotherapy was, -
3:15 - 3:21that it was not of balding of the hair,
losing eyelashes and eyebrows, -
3:21 - 3:26and looking sick and sad -
that's how we cancer patients look. -
3:26 - 3:31From that glamorous diva
to this, it was not looks, -
3:33 - 3:39it was actually when I had to sign waivers
for a permanent heart damage, -
3:39 - 3:43a permanent ear damage,
a permanent neuropathy problem, -
3:43 - 3:48that my hand would be shaking
for the rest of my life. -
3:48 - 3:52It's then I got scared, really scared.
-
3:58 - 4:04I started to worry
that maybe these were my last days. -
4:05 - 4:09Maybe I was facing the d-word:
-
4:09 - 4:13the unimaginable, unbelievable,
-
4:13 - 4:16unfathomable death.
-
4:20 - 4:25And then I started to think
if this was the end of my life. -
4:26 - 4:29What did I do with my life so far?
-
4:29 - 4:32Did I live well? Was I proud of it?
-
4:33 - 4:34Of course not.
-
4:35 - 4:37I had messed it.
-
4:37 - 4:43I was living carelessly,
ignoring my health, my career, -
4:43 - 4:45people who cared for me and loved me.
-
4:48 - 4:53Friends, it's been four and a half years,
-
4:54 - 4:56I'm cancer-free now.
-
4:56 - 4:59God has been kind. Life has been kind.
-
4:59 - 5:00(Applause)
-
5:05 - 5:08Not a single day that goes by
-
5:09 - 5:15that I forget the promise I made to myself
when I thought I was dying. -
5:16 - 5:21I have prioritized all the three things -
I call them gifts - -
5:22 - 5:23my health:
-
5:25 - 5:30I realized the importance of health
when I was down with cancer -
5:30 - 5:36so I nurture it now,
I look after it, I read, I inquire, -
5:36 - 5:40and do whatever it takes
for me to have a good health; -
5:42 - 5:45my relationship with my family:
-
5:45 - 5:50is much more filled with respect and trust
-
5:50 - 5:53because there were the only people
who were with me -
5:53 - 5:55from the beginning till the end;
-
5:56 - 5:58my friendship:
-
5:58 - 6:03I used to have an entourage of friends,
a huge circle of friends, -
6:03 - 6:06but today, I have a handful
-
6:06 - 6:11with whom I share a deeper bond,
a more meaningful friendship; -
6:13 - 6:15my work:
-
6:15 - 6:20I realized, I'm an artist
in my heart and my spirit -
6:20 - 6:22so I need to be challenged
-
6:22 - 6:26for me to grow as an artist,
to be satisfied, -
6:26 - 6:31so I pick and choose films
carefully not carelessly - -
6:31 - 6:33the way I was doing before.
-
6:34 - 6:37I also got a fourth gift,
-
6:38 - 6:40and that is the realization
-
6:40 - 6:45of the value of service, of contribution.
-
6:47 - 6:50I would like to share a story.
-
6:50 - 6:55When not too many people
were visiting me in the hospital, -
6:55 - 7:02there was this lady who would come
and be with me on Sundays. -
7:03 - 7:09She's a doctor, a pathologist
in Cornell Hospital in New York. -
7:09 - 7:12Her name is Dr Navneet Narula,
-
7:12 - 7:14and she would come,
-
7:15 - 7:19sit in that uncomfortable hospital chair,
-
7:19 - 7:22and spend the entire day with me.
-
7:22 - 7:24I was very intrigued
-
7:24 - 7:27because she was very busy.
-
7:28 - 7:31So I asked her, "Why are you doing this?
-
7:32 - 7:37You're not my friend from the past,
and you're not my fan, for sure." -
7:39 - 7:41You know what she replied?
-
7:42 - 7:48She said, "Manisha-ji, with the hope
that you will do this to somebody else." -
7:49 - 7:51(Applause)
-
7:55 - 7:58How simple yet so profound, isn't it?
-
8:00 - 8:06That's when I made a promise
that if I get a second chance to life, -
8:09 - 8:15I will pay attention and be of service
in whatever capacity I can. -
8:16 - 8:19It can be anything big or small,
it really doesn't matter. -
8:23 - 8:25When an earthquake hit Nepal,
-
8:25 - 8:31I had gone there, with the help of UNFPA.
-
8:31 - 8:36We did a campaign called "Dignity First."
-
8:36 - 8:40And I'm hoping to go to remote areas
-
8:40 - 8:46and talk about the importance
to educate our girls, our daughters -
8:46 - 8:48and talk against child marriages
-
8:48 - 8:52as there are many multiple
complications from that. -
8:52 - 8:55So that I do,
-
8:55 - 9:00or anything as a cancer survivor.
-
9:01 - 9:03I go around giving hope to people
-
9:03 - 9:06telling them cancer
is not a death sentence, -
9:06 - 9:10that there is a life beyond cancer.
-
9:11 - 9:12It could be anybody,
-
9:12 - 9:14It could be a friend
who's reached out to me -
9:14 - 9:17and needs my patiently
[listening to them], anything. -
9:17 - 9:19So I do that now.
-
9:25 - 9:29A large part of my story,
-
9:29 - 9:33this gambit of experiences,
-
9:33 - 9:39the highs and the lows,
this name, fame, glamor, -
9:39 - 9:42and the depth of despair,
-
9:42 - 9:44of cancer,
-
9:44 - 9:50traumatic chemotherapy, facing death
-
9:50 - 9:54is not actually about the incidences,
-
9:56 - 10:02it is about finding sense behind it,
finding meaning in it all. -
10:02 - 10:06I had to make sense of things
that had happened to me, -
10:06 - 10:09and the things that were happening to me.
-
10:10 - 10:16I found a few,
such basic, simple principles, -
10:16 - 10:18and because they are simple,
-
10:18 - 10:22we tend to take it for granted
and don't apply them. -
10:24 - 10:26I found, number one,
-
10:27 - 10:31that this life is a gift.
-
10:31 - 10:35I know it's a cliche, but it is a gift.
-
10:35 - 10:39And everything that comes
with this life is a gift. -
10:39 - 10:42This body is a gift.
-
10:42 - 10:47We need to nurture it,
look after it, be grateful, -
10:47 - 10:48we need to embrace that.
-
10:48 - 10:53People who cross our path,
they are a gift. -
10:55 - 10:56Number two:
-
10:58 - 11:02the importance of introspection.
-
11:06 - 11:12We need to dive into the depth
of our being, of our self, -
11:12 - 11:16to discover our truth and live our truth.
-
11:17 - 11:22As our time is limited,
we must make the most of it. -
11:22 - 11:25We cannot be living somebody else's life.
-
11:25 - 11:28We cannot be living
somebody else's idea of life, -
11:28 - 11:30what is good and what is bad.
-
11:30 - 11:34We need to find for ourselves.
We need to introspect. -
11:34 - 11:35We need to discover
-
11:35 - 11:40what it is that motivates us,
compels us to live a great life, -
11:40 - 11:46so every day, we can live
with clarity and passion. -
11:48 - 11:50Number three:
-
11:52 - 11:57No matter, no matter,
no matter, no matter -
11:57 - 12:00how we want to be prepared,
-
12:01 - 12:04there will always be a surprise.
-
12:05 - 12:08Life will throw
some challenge from somewhere -
12:08 - 12:11that we are not
really fully prepared for. -
12:12 - 12:15But we have a choice.
-
12:15 - 12:19We can either be consumed by it,
-
12:19 - 12:22become a victim,
and make that larger than us, -
12:22 - 12:25and get defined by that problem,
-
12:25 - 12:31or we can turn it around
into a platform for our growth -
12:31 - 12:33because there is a message,
-
12:33 - 12:37there is a lesson
underneath every problem that we face. -
12:39 - 12:43We can make
the worst situation of our life -
12:43 - 12:47into a narrative of triumph.
-
12:47 - 12:53The wisdom and the courage
is all within us. -
12:53 - 12:54(Applause)

In this candid talk, Manisha shares how she discovered the meaning of life when things went down and how she made the worst situation of her life into a narrative of triumph!
Manisha Koirala is well known for her acting prowess and her ethereal looks which easily pull at audience heartstrings. However, what many may not know about this Nepalese beauty is her quiet confidence and graceful strength which have enabled her rise to success in Bollywood and work in critically acclaimed movies with directors such as Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Vidhu Vinod Chopra, Subhash Ghai, and Mani Ratnam. Manisha also had her fair share of ups and downs, but it was the diagnosis of cancer in 2012 which caused her to pause and introspect her life deeply. Perhaps it was this very introspection which gave Manisha new goals and motivated her to rise and shine through trying times.
