Atheism in the Bible belt | Joe Mercaldo | TEDxGreenville
-
0:16 - 0:17Hello.
-
0:21 - 0:23Have you ever been there?
-
0:23 - 0:24Do we all start out that way?
-
0:25 - 0:28I mean it's like in school
when you're asked to take a test, -
0:28 - 0:30where you circle the correct answer:
-
0:30 - 0:34Are you going to pick A, B or C?
-
0:34 - 0:37It has to be one and everyone
is only going to choose one, -
0:39 - 0:41but not every answer is going to be right.
-
0:41 - 0:43This is pretty straightforward
-
0:43 - 0:46and how a lot of people
start out taking tests. -
0:46 - 0:49This is common to most if not all of us,
-
0:49 - 0:52but one day someone put
a test in front of you. -
0:53 - 0:55There was another option:
-
0:55 - 1:00it was none of the above or some other
variation of the same reasoning. -
1:01 - 1:05For the first time you're allowed to say,
"The answer is not there." -
1:05 - 1:07You don't have to believe
in a certain choice, -
1:07 - 1:11but that your choice now can be
that the answer was never there to start. -
1:13 - 1:14So D could be your answer.
-
1:15 - 1:16Really?
-
1:17 - 1:19I mean you were told over and over again
-
1:19 - 1:23there were certain ways to do things
and there was always a correct answer. -
1:23 - 1:27And remember that,
like in high school, A's, B's and C's, -
1:28 - 1:32that's what you'd rather have
before ever trying to go for a D. -
1:33 - 1:36And I like to tell people,
"D does not stand for devil." -
1:36 - 1:37Just to make sure.
-
1:37 - 1:39(Laughter)
-
1:40 - 1:44So think of it this way: what if every day
you felt like you're in another world, -
1:45 - 1:48didn't fit in and everything...
-
1:48 - 1:53and the only way you felt like
you could survive was to blend in. -
1:54 - 2:00Makes sense that you might feel
awkward, anxious and invisible. -
2:00 - 2:04I think we all agree that we feel
our best when we can be ourselves -
2:06 - 2:08and be accepted that way.
-
2:08 - 2:12When I was younger, all I could do
was see things as black-and-white. -
2:12 - 2:16So something was right or wrong,
it was this way or that way, -
2:17 - 2:19there was no gray, no wiggle room.
-
2:20 - 2:22There was no questioning about it.
-
2:23 - 2:24The "D's" in life,
-
2:24 - 2:27they have a story, they have a face,
-
2:27 - 2:32they have accomplishments
and challenges too. -
2:32 - 2:34So what's my story?
-
2:35 - 2:37Well, years ago,
I was in a Catholic Church -
2:37 - 2:39saying a Creed along with everyone.
-
2:40 - 2:42Now a Creed, for anyone who does not know,
-
2:42 - 2:45is a way to profess
your beliefs in something. -
2:45 - 2:48At that very moment
I happened to be saying, -
2:48 - 2:52"I believe in God, Father Almighty,
maker of Heaven and Earth, -
2:52 - 2:54of all that is seen and unseen."
-
2:54 - 2:59And then - whoa! -
all of a sudden my head, my brain, -
3:00 - 3:04it just said confidently and surprisingly,
-
3:04 - 3:06"No, I don't."
-
3:09 - 3:11And after saying this line
and every one after it, -
3:11 - 3:15I started to like check it off
like a mental list of -
3:15 - 3:17"No, I don't." to everything.
-
3:18 - 3:22Up until now, I had just said
what everyone else was saying. -
3:22 - 3:24I thought that's how to do it,
-
3:24 - 3:27like anything
that you were told to memorize: -
3:27 - 3:31to say over and over again
without questioning. -
3:32 - 3:36So D actually ended up being my answer.
-
3:36 - 3:40D in my case it was an option
called atheism. -
3:41 - 3:45So let's define atheism.
-
3:45 - 3:48According to the Merriam-Webster
Online Dictionary, -
3:50 - 3:53the first definition
is the archaic definition, -
3:53 - 3:57and that's 'ungodliness, wickedness'.
-
3:57 - 4:03The current definition though is
a disbelief in the existence of a deity. -
4:03 - 4:05There is no deity.
-
4:06 - 4:08So let me explain it this way:
-
4:08 - 4:12there's Up, I think that's where
most of us would think -
4:12 - 4:16that people put a god,
a happy place, a heaven. -
4:16 - 4:18For every Up there's a Down.
-
4:19 - 4:24So Down, that's where people
put a devil, bad place, demons. -
4:25 - 4:27So where do atheists fit in?
-
4:28 - 4:32Right there: no god, no devil.
-
4:33 - 4:37Just surrounded
by all of the other human beings. -
4:39 - 4:41So us atheists have nothing?
-
4:41 - 4:45No, we have each other.
We even count all of you. -
4:45 - 4:49This is not saying
that we don't struggle with life issues. -
4:49 - 4:53What I'm saying is that I have
to live up to my own mistakes. -
4:53 - 4:57I can't conveniently say things like,
"The devil made me do it." -
5:01 - 5:04or "It's God's will or plan."
-
5:04 - 5:08Since I have no answer,
there is no answer. -
5:08 - 5:12So it all comes down to who I am
and how I choose to respond -
5:12 - 5:14to any given situation.
-
5:15 - 5:17I want to be good.
-
5:17 - 5:22I think everyone wants to be good,
wants to be respected, appreciated. -
5:23 - 5:24But life is hard,
-
5:26 - 5:30mistakes are made, people are hurt,
-
5:30 - 5:32even people that are loved.
-
5:32 - 5:35My atheism does not change that at all.
-
5:36 - 5:42I screw up, I make mistakes,
certainly don't know everything. -
5:44 - 5:47In fact recently I made
a couple mistakes - -
5:48 - 5:51more than a couple, but -
and I hurt someone I love. -
5:52 - 5:56And I also hurt some other friends
and some other people in my life. -
5:57 - 5:59And I need to take care of that myself
-
5:59 - 6:02because I didn't have
anything else to go to. -
6:02 - 6:05And so I took care of it,
I looked into it. -
6:05 - 6:08Today I simply want to remind you
-
6:09 - 6:12that no matter what you believe,
-
6:13 - 6:17understand that not everyone
thinks the same. -
6:19 - 6:23And just because we believe
different or think different, -
6:24 - 6:27doesn't mean that we are different.
-
6:27 - 6:30First one was adopt-a-highway
that a group of us do, -
6:30 - 6:33this is the soup kitchen,
these are the type of things we do. -
6:33 - 6:35And sometimes we just have fun.
-
6:36 - 6:41As an atheist in the Bible Belt,
it's often hard for many of us -
6:42 - 6:45to remind people thatwe are people too
-
6:47 - 6:48and we're here.
-
6:48 - 6:52As I said, there's more
than probably you realize. -
6:53 - 6:58There's people in your family,
there's probably people you work with, -
6:59 - 7:02everywhere you go
and we're just the same. -
7:04 - 7:06So what I like to say to you is:
-
7:07 - 7:09I'm not asking you
to change your world for me, -
7:10 - 7:15but rather you realize,
I'm in this world with you. -
7:16 - 7:17Thank you.
-
7:17 - 7:21(Applause)
