    Dear Thay, dear Sangha,

    my name is Jenna and I am here with
    my daughter and her baby,

    my grandbaby for this retreat.
  • 0:49 - 0:51
    And I am a new grandmother.
  • 0:52 - 0:55
    And what has happened for me
    is something that I've never expected,
  • 0:55 - 1:01
    which is my heart has got me even bigger
    and filled with so much love
  • 1:02 - 1:05
    for this little baby girl
    and this little baby boy.
  • 1:07 - 1:09
    I feel very very deeply
  • 1:10 - 1:16
    and I feel a very big responsibility,
    a sacred responsibility for --
  • 1:21 - 1:24
    a future to be possible for them.
  • 1:33 - 1:40
    So, I try to do what I have learnt,
    which is to breathe and enjoy the beauty
  • 1:42 - 1:47
    and the joy of these babies in this life
    and in this world.
  • 1:48 - 1:54
    But even reading your book recently,
    'Love Letters to Mother Earth'
  • 1:55 - 2:01
    and I am an activist, so the research
    that I have done about what is predicted
  • 2:02 - 2:06
    for life on this planet
    is very painful for me to live with.
  • 2:08 - 2:12
    And part of that is
    because I feel quite alone
  • 2:12 - 2:17
    and as I move through life,
    I look around and I wonder
  • 2:17 - 2:20
    if other people are feeling and
    thinking the same things as I am
  • 2:20 - 2:24
    because it feels very confusing to me
  • 2:26 - 2:31
    that more people are not talking
    about the positive things we can do.
  • 2:32 - 2:37
    And so, I do take the actions
    that I need to
  • 2:37 - 2:40
    and I am helping preserve tigers
    and the wild.
  • 2:40 - 2:43
    And the good news is
    there are more coming back.
  • 2:43 - 2:47
    Maybe they won't go extinct in the wild.
  • 2:47 - 2:52
    And where I live in the Pacific Northwest,
    there are changes happening politically
  • 2:53 - 2:57
    around prevention of coal coming
    into the area to go to Asia to be burned.

    But I don't feel like there are a lot
    of places where I can talk about this.
  • 3:02 - 3:07
    I don't want to be angry about it,
    I want to talk from my heart about it.
  • 3:07 - 3:12
    I want to talk without a ruse about how
    to make positive changes that we can.
  • 3:13 - 3:18
    And what I am wondering is
    how we can do that in the Sangha
  • 3:18 - 3:23
    because it seems even some reservations
    that perhaps talking about this thing
  • 3:23 - 3:29
    is too political or too social and
    I feel alone in my suffering around this.

    our friend is here on the retreat
    with her daughter and her grandbaby.
  • 3:42 - 3:46
    And she is a very happy grandmother
    of two young babies
  • 3:48 - 3:51
    and her heart has gotten bigger
    as a grandmother.
  • 3:54 - 3:57
    But she is very worried for the future
    for her grandchildren.
  • 3:59 - 4:04
    She is an activist, she has been reading
    Thay's recent book
  • 4:04 - 4:08
    'Love Letters to Mother Earth', and
    she has done her own research and
  • 4:09 - 4:13
    she knows that the prognosis does not look
    good for the future for her grandchildren.
  • 4:14 - 4:18
    She is doing her best to cherish them
    in the present moment and to cherish life.
  • 4:20 - 4:24
    But she has this fear for them coming up
    and she feels alone in this.
  • 4:26 - 4:30
    She feels isolated,
    she does not want to be angry,
  • 4:30 - 4:33
    she would like to speak and
    act out of love
  • 4:33 - 4:36
    but she doesn't know how or where
    and in what way to do that.
  • 4:36 - 4:42
    She is active in protecting wild tigers
    and other projects
  • 4:43 - 4:46
    and she knows that in this way,
    she can make an impact.
  • 4:47 - 4:53
    Within her own Sangha, she also sometimes
    feels that there is not enough space
  • 4:54 - 4:58
    to talk about these issues or to work
    on these issues together
  • 4:58 - 5:02
    because they are seen perhaps
    is political or social.
  • 5:03 - 5:09
    And so, the essence of her question
    is this, how to go forward. Thank you.

    Sangha building is a very important work.
  • 5:25 - 5:30
    Sangha means harmonious community
  • 5:33 - 5:40
    and the main task of the Sangha
    is not to organize events
  • 5:44 - 5:48
    even events of practice of the practice.
  • 5:50 - 5:57
    The main purpose of the Sangha is to build
    brotherhood and sisterhood, harmony.
  • 5:59 - 6:06
    That is why,the practice of deep listening
    and loving speech is so important.
  • 6:09 - 6:13
    We should be able to communicate
    with each other easily.
  • 6:15 - 6:24
    We share our views, we can come easily
    to agreement, collective insight.
  • 6:26 - 6:32
    And you feel that sitting in the Sangha,
    you feel nourished, you feel stronger
  • 6:38 - 6:45
    and that is the real Sangha building,
    not organize.
  • 6:49 - 6:53
    And with Sangha like that,
    everything is possible.
  • 6:53 - 6:59
    Because you feel nourished, you don't lose
    your hope and we have sensible time
  • 7:00 - 7:04
    even a Buddha cannot do much
    without the Sangha.

    Sangha building,you need a lot of patience
    and patience is a mark of true love.

    In Plum Village, we spend a lot of time
    and energy building a Sangha.
  • 7:22 - 7:27
    We have enough time to sit together,
    to eat together, to drink together,
  • 7:27 - 7:33
    to walk together,
    exchange views and so on.
  • 7:34 - 7:38
    Because we know, that
    if we do not have enough harmony
  • 7:38 - 7:41
    and happiness in our Sangha,
  • 7:41 - 7:44
    it could not mean anything
    to organize a retreat
  • 7:44 - 7:47
    for other people to come
    and have practice.
  • 7:50 - 7:54
    The Buddha spent a lot of time
    building his Sangha
  • 7:55 - 7:57
    and he was a perfect Sangha builder.
  • 7:59 - 8:03
    It is not easy to build a Sangha
    and the Buddha felt the same.
  • 8:05 - 8:10
    But with compassion and patience,
  • 8:14 - 8:18
    he was able to build a beautiful Sangha.
  • 8:20 - 8:28
    When the Buddha was 80,
    he met King Prasenajit for the last time,
  • 8:29 - 8:32
    the King was also 80,
  • 8:32 - 8:37
    And the king saw the Buddha was travelling
    and enjoying and he imitated the Buddha
  • 8:38 - 8:48
    and also left the politics to his son
    to enjoy visiting the country
  • 8:49 - 8:55
    and one day, by chance they met,
    in the northern part of the country
  • 8:57 - 9:03
    and on that occasion, King Prasenajit
    praised the Buddha and he said:
  • 9:04 - 9:09
    "Dear teacher,
    everytime I see the Sangha,
  • 9:13 - 9:17
    I appreciate you much more.
  • 9:20 - 9:28
    As I contemplate the Sangha moving,
    sitting, doing Dharma works,
  • 9:29 - 9:33
    I see your real insight, your real value,
  • 9:35 - 9:41
    and today, I would like to bow to you
    because you have such a beautiful Sangha.
  • 9:45 - 9:53
    In this trip, I remembered, once
    I went to a place with two carpenters,
  • 9:57 - 10:02
    and they were your disciples,
  • 10:04 - 10:07
    and that night we were sleeping
    in the same room.
  • 10:09 - 10:15
    They turned their head to the direction
    they believed you were
  • 10:16 - 10:19
    and they turned their feet towards me.
  • 10:21 - 10:25
    They fear you more
    than they fear the King,
  • 10:25 - 10:29
    so I know that you are loved daily
  • 10:29 - 10:33
    by members of your Sangha,
    foremost Sangha.
  • 10:33 - 10:39
    And today I would like to tell you
    that the Sangha is a jewel
  • 10:40 - 10:45
    and with the Sangha, you can accomplish
    much in the world.
  • 10:47 - 10:53
    So King Prasenajit as well as the Buddha
    recognized that the Sangha building
  • 10:53 - 10:55
    is the most important thing to do.
  • 10:56 - 11:01
    With the happy Sangha, many people
    can come and take refuge
  • 11:03 - 11:07
    and benefit from the collective energy
    of peace and happiness
  • 11:08 - 11:12
    and compassion and mindfulness.
  • 11:13 - 11:18
    With the Sangha like that,
    you can nourish your grandchildren.
  • 11:19 - 11:23
    That is the safest place
    for your children to be.
  • 11:26 - 11:32
    If children are nourished and
    raised in such an environment,
  • 11:32 - 11:38
    they will become instruments of peace
    and we have to believe in our children.
  • 11:40 - 11:43
    Our children have Buddha nature in them.
  • 11:43 - 11:47
    And what we can do today is not to worry
  • 11:47 - 11:53
    but to focus our efforts in watering
    the seeds of love, compassion,
  • 11:55 - 11:58
    talent in them and we should
    believe in our children,
  • 11:59 - 12:04
    investing and transmitting the best
    we have to our children
  • 12:04 - 12:06
    and not to worry about future.
  • 12:07 - 12:11
    Taking good care, the best care
    of the present moment
  • 12:11 - 12:14
    is about everything you can do
    for the future
  • 12:15 - 12:19
    so instead of spending energy
    to worry about future,
  • 12:19 - 12:22
    invest all your energies
    into the present and
  • 12:25 - 12:30
    nourish our children and grandchildren
    with the energy of hope,
  • 12:32 - 12:35
    compassion and insight.
