How to ask for help -- and get a "yes"

    I've actually never seen it

    on one of those top ten lists
    of things people fear,

    like public speaking
  • Not Synced
    and death,
  • Not Synced
    but I'm pretty sure
    it actually belongs there.
  • Not Synced
    Even though in many ways it's foolish
    for us to be afraid to admit we need help,
  • Not Synced
    whether it's from a loved one
    or a friend or from a coworker
  • Not Synced
    or even from a stranger,
  • Not Synced
    somehow it always feel just a little bit
  • Not Synced
    uncomfortable and embarrassing
  • Not Synced
    to actually ask for help,
  • Not Synced
    which is of course why most of us
    try to avoid asking for help
  • Not Synced
    whenever humanly possible.
  • Not Synced
    My father was one
    of those legions of fathers
  • Not Synced
    who I swear would rather drive
    through an alligator-infested swamp
  • Not Synced
    than actually ask someone for help
    getting back to the road.
  • Not Synced
    When I was a kid,
    we took a family vacation.
  • Not Synced
    We drove from our home in South Jersey
    to Colonial Williamsburg,
  • Not Synced
    and I remember we got really badly lost,
  • Not Synced
    and my mother and I pleaded with him
  • Not Synced
    to please just pull over and ask someone
    for directions back to the highway,
  • Not Synced
    and he absolutely refused,
  • Not Synced
    and in fact assured us
    that we were not lost,
  • Not Synced
    he had just always wanted to know
    what was over here.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    So if we're going to ask for help,
  • Not Synced
    and we have to,
  • Not Synced
    we all do, practically every day,
  • Not Synced
    the only way we're going to even
    begin to get comfortable with it
  • Not Synced
    is to get good at it,
  • Not Synced
    to actually increases the chances
    that when you ask for help from someone,
  • Not Synced
    they're actually going to say yes,
  • Not Synced
    and not only that, but they're going
    to find it actually satisfying
  • Not Synced
    and rewarding to help you,
  • Not Synced
    because that way, they'll be motivated
    to continue to help you into the future.
  • Not Synced
    So research that I
    and some of my colleagues have done
  • Not Synced
    has shed a lot of light on why it is
    that sometimes people say yes
  • Not Synced
    to our requests for help
  • Not Synced
    and why sometimes they say no.
  • Not Synced
    Now let me just start by saying right now,
  • Not Synced
    if you need help,
  • Not Synced
    you are going to have to ask for it
  • Not Synced
    out loud.
  • Not Synced
    OK?
  • Not Synced
    We all to some extent suffer
    from something that psychologists call
  • Not Synced
    the illusion of transparency,
  • Not Synced
    basically the mistaken belief
    that our thoughts and our feelings
  • Not Synced
    and our needs are really obvious
    to other people.
  • Not Synced
    This is not true, but we believe it,
  • Not Synced
    and so we just mostly stand around
    waiting for someone to notice our needs
  • Not Synced
    and then spontaneously offer
    to help us with it.
  • Not Synced
    This is a really, really bad assumption.
  • Not Synced
    In fact, not only is it very difficult
    to tell what your needs are,
  • Not Synced
    but even the people close to you
    often struggle to understand
  • Not Synced
    how they can support you.
  • Not Synced
    My partner has actually
    had to adopt a habit
  • Not Synced
    of asking me multiple times a day,
  • Not Synced
    "Are you OK? Do you need anything?"
  • Not Synced
    because I am so, so bad at signaling
    when I need someone's help.
  • Not Synced
    Now he is more patient than I deserve,
  • Not Synced
    and much more proactive,
    much more about helping
  • Not Synced
    than any of us have any right
    to expect other people to be.
  • Not Synced
    So if you need help, you're going
    to have to ask for it,
  • Not Synced
    and by the way, even when someone
    can tell that you need help,
  • Not Synced
    how do they know that you want it?
  • Not Synced
    Did you ever try to give unsolicited help
    to someone who it turns out
  • Not Synced
    did not actually want your help
    in the first place?
  • Not Synced
    They get nasty real quick, don't they.
  • Not Synced
    The other day, true story,
  • Not Synced
    my teenage daughter
    was getting dressed for school
  • Not Synced
    and I decided to give her
    some unsolicited help about that.
  • Not Synced
    I happen to think she looks amazing
    in brighter colors.
  • Not Synced
    She tends to prefer sort of darker,
    more neutral tones,
  • Not Synced
    and so I said, very helpfully,
  • Not Synced
    that I thought maybe
    she could go back upstairs
  • Not Synced
    and try to find something
    a little less somber.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    So if looks could kill,
  • Not Synced
    I would not be standing here right now.
  • Not Synced
    We really can't blame other people for not
    just spontaneously offering to help us
  • Not Synced
    when we don't actually know
    that that's what is wanted.
  • Not Synced
    In fact, actually, research shows
    that 90 percent of the help
  • Not Synced
    that coworkers give one another
    in the workplace is in response
  • Not Synced
    to explicit requests for help.
  • Not Synced
    So you're going to have to say the words,
  • Not Synced
    "I need your help."
  • Not Synced
    Right? There's no getting around it.
  • Not Synced
    Now, to be good at it,
  • Not Synced
    to make sure that people actually do
    help you when you ask for it,
  • Not Synced
    there are a few other things
    that are very helpful to keep in mind.
  • Not Synced
    First thing: when you ask for help,
  • Not Synced
    be very, very specific
  • Not Synced
    about the help you want and why.
  • Not Synced
    Vague, sort of indirect request for help
  • Not Synced
    actually aren't very helpful
    to the helper, right?
  • Not Synced
    We don't actually know
    what it is you want from us,
  • Not Synced
    and, just as important,
  • Not Synced
    we don't know whether or not
    we can be successful
  • Not Synced
    in giving you the help.
  • Not Synced
    Nobody wants to give bad help.
  • Not Synced
    Like me, you probably get
    some of these requests
  • Not Synced
    from perfectly pleasant
    strangers on LinkedIn
  • Not Synced
    who want to do things like
  • Not Synced
    "get together over coffee and connect"
  • Not Synced
    or "pick your brain."
  • Not Synced
    I ignore these requests
    literally every time,
  • Not Synced
    and it's not that I'm not a nice person,
  • Not Synced
    it's just that when I don't know
    what it is you want from me,
  • Not Synced
    like, the kind of help
    you're hoping that can I provide,
  • Not Synced
    I'm not interested.
  • Not Synced
    Nobody is.
  • Not Synced
    I'd have been much more interested
    if they had just come out and said
  • Not Synced
    whatever it is what they
    were hoping to get from me,
  • Not Synced
    because I'm pretty sure they had
    something specific in mind.
  • Not Synced
    So go ahead and say,
  • Not Synced
    "I'm hoping to discuss opportunities
    to work in your company,"
  • Not Synced
    or, "I'd like to propose
    a joint research project
  • Not Synced
    in an area I know you're interested in,"
  • Not Synced
    or, "I'd like your advice
    on getting into medical school."
  • Not Synced
    Technically I can't help you
    with that last one,
  • Not Synced
    because I'm not that kind of doctor,
  • Not Synced
    but I could point you in the direction
    of someone who could.
  • Not Synced
    OK, so second tip,
  • Not Synced
    this is really important:
  • Not Synced
    please avoid disclaimers,
    apologies, and bribes.
  • Not Synced
    Really, really important.
  • Not Synced
    So do any of these sound familiar?
  • Not Synced
    I'm so, so sorry
    that I have to ask you for this?
  • Not Synced
    I really hate bothering you with this.
  • Not Synced
    If I had any way of doing this
    without your help, I would.
  • Not Synced
    Sometimes it feels like people
    are so eager to prove
  • Not Synced
    that they're not weak and greedy
    when they ask your for help,
  • Not Synced
    they're completely missing out
    on how uncomfortable
  • Not Synced
    they're making you feel.
  • Not Synced
    And by the way, how am I supposed
    to find it satisfying to help you
  • Not Synced
    if you really hated
    having to ask me for help?
  • Not Synced
    And while it is perfectly,
    perfectly acceptable
  • Not Synced
    to pay strangers to do things for you,
  • Not Synced
    you need to be very, very careful
    when it comes to incentivizing
  • Not Synced
    your friends and coworkers.
  • Not Synced
    When you have a relationship with someone,
  • Not Synced
    helping one another is actually
    a natural part of that relationship.
  • Not Synced
    It's how we show one another that we care.
  • Not Synced
    If you introduce incentives
    or payments into that,
  • Not Synced
    what can happen is it starts to feel
    like it isn't a relationship,
  • Not Synced
    it's a transaction,
  • Not Synced
    and that actually
    is experienced as distancing,
  • Not Synced
    which ironically makes people
    less likely to help you.
  • Not Synced
    So a spontaneous gift
  • Not Synced
    after someone gives you some help
    to show your appreciation and gratitude,
  • Not Synced
    perfectly fine.
  • Not Synced
    An offer to pay your best friend
    to help you move into your new apartment
  • Not Synced
    is not.
  • Not Synced
    OK, third rule,
  • Not Synced
    and I really mean this one:
  • Not Synced
    please do not ask for help
  • Not Synced
    over email or text.
  • Not Synced
    Really, seriously, please don't.
  • Not Synced
    Email and text are impersonal,
  • Not Synced
    and I realize sometimes
    there's no alternative,
  • Not Synced
    but mostly what happens is,
  • Not Synced
    we like to ask for help
    over email and text
  • Not Synced
    because it feels less awkward
    for us to do so.
  • Not Synced
    You know what else feels
    less awkward over email and text?
  • Not Synced
    Telling you no.
  • Not Synced
    And it turns out there's
    research to support this.
  • Not Synced
    In-person requests for help
    are 30 times more likely to get a yes
  • Not Synced
    than a request made by email.
  • Not Synced
    So when something is really important
    and you really need someone's help,
  • Not Synced
    make face time to make the request,
  • Not Synced
    or use your phone as a phone
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    to ask for the help that you need.
  • Not Synced
    OK.
  • Not Synced
    Last one, and this is actually
    a really, really important one
  • Not Synced
    and probably the one
    that is most overlooked
  • Not Synced
    when it comes to asking for help:
  • Not Synced
    when you ask someone
    for their help and they say yes,
  • Not Synced
    follow up with them afterward.
  • Not Synced
    There's a common misconception
    that what's rewarding about helping
  • Not Synced
    is the act of helping itself.
  • Not Synced
    This is not true.
  • Not Synced
    What is rewarding about helping
    is knowing that your help landed,
  • Not Synced
    that it had impact,
  • Not Synced
    that you were effective.
  • Not Synced
    If I have no idea
    how my help affected you,
  • Not Synced
    how am I supposed to feel about it?
  • Not Synced
    This happened. I was a university
    professor for many years,
  • Not Synced
    I wrote lots and lots
    of letters of recommendation
  • Not Synced
    for people to get jobs
    or to go into graduate school,
  • Not Synced
    and probably about 95 percent of them,
  • Not Synced
    I have no idea what happened.
  • Not Synced
    Now how do I feel about the time
    and effort I took to do that,
  • Not Synced
    when I really have no idea
    if I helped you,
  • Not Synced
    if it actually helped you
    get the thing that you wanted.
  • Not Synced
    In fact, this idea of feeling effective
  • Not Synced
    is part of why certain
    kinds of donor appeals
  • Not Synced
    are so, so persuasive,
  • Not Synced
    because they allow you
    to really vividly imagine
  • Not Synced
    the effect that your help
    is going to have.
  • Not Synced
    So take something like DonorsChoose.
  • Not Synced
    You go online, you can choose
    the individual teacher by name
  • Not Synced
    whose classroom that
    you're going to be able to help
  • Not Synced
    by literally buying the specific items
    they've requested, like microscopes
  • Not Synced
    or laptops or flexible seating.
  • Not Synced
    An appeal like that makes it
    so easy for me to imagine
  • Not Synced
    the good that my money will do
  • Not Synced
    that I actually get
    an immediate sense of effectiveness
  • Not Synced
    the minute I commit to giving.
  • Not Synced
    But you know what else they do?
  • Not Synced
    They follow up.
  • Not Synced
    So donors actually get letters
    from the kids in the classroom.
  • Not Synced
    They get pictures.
  • Not Synced
    They get to know
    that they made a difference,
  • Not Synced
    and this is something we need
    to all be doing in our everyday lives,
  • Not Synced
    especially if we want people
    to continue to give us help
  • Not Synced
    over the long term.
  • Not Synced
    Take time to tell your colleague
    that the help that they gave you
  • Not Synced
    really helped you land that big sale,
  • Not Synced
    or helped you get that interview
    that you were really hoping to get.
  • Not Synced
    Take time to tell your partner
    that the support they gave you
  • Not Synced
    really made it possible for you
    to get through a tough time.
  • Not Synced
    Take time to tell your catsitter
  • Not Synced
    that you're super-happy
    that for some reason, this time
  • Not Synced
    the cats didn't break anything
    while you were away,
  • Not Synced
    and so they must have done
    a really good job.
  • Not Synced
    The bottom line is,
  • Not Synced
    I know, believe me I know,
  • Not Synced
    that it is not easy to ask for help.
  • Not Synced
    We are all a little bit afraid to do it.
  • Not Synced
    It makes us feel vulnerable.
  • Not Synced
    But the reality of modern work
    and modern life
  • Not Synced
    is that nobody does it alone.
  • Not Synced
    Nobody succeeds in a vacuum.
  • Not Synced
    More than ever, we actually do
    have to rely on other people,
  • Not Synced
    on their support and collaboration,
    in order to be successful.
  • Not Synced
    So when you need help,
    ask for it out loud,
  • Not Synced
    and when you do, do it in a way
    that increases your chances
  • Not Synced
    that you'll get a yes
  • Not Synced
    and makes the other person
    feel awesome for having helped you,
  • Not Synced
    because you both deserve it.
  • Not Synced
