Who won the space race? - Jeff Steers

  • Not Synced
    On October 4, 1957,
  • Not Synced
the world watched in awe and fear
  • Not Synced
as the Soviet Union launched Sputnik,
  • Not Synced
    the world's first man-made satellite,
  • Not Synced
    into space.
  • Not Synced
    This little metal ball,
  • Not Synced
smaller than two feet in diameter,
  • Not Synced
    launched a space race
  • Not Synced
    between the U.S. and U.S.S.R.
  • Not Synced
that would last for eighteen years
  • Not Synced
and change the world as we know it.
  • Not Synced
Sputnik was actually not the first piece
  • Not Synced
of human technology to enter space.
  • Not Synced
That superlative goes to the V-2 rocket
  • Not Synced
used by Germany in missile attacks
  • Not Synced
    against Allied cities
  • Not Synced
    as a last-ditch effort
  • Not Synced
in the final years of World War II.
  • Not Synced
    It wasn't very effective,
  • Not Synced
but, at the end of the war,
  • Not Synced
both the U.S. and U.S.S.R. had captured
  • Not Synced
    the technology
  • Not Synced
and the scientists that had developed it
  • Not Synced
and began using them for their own projects.
  • Not Synced
    And by August 1957,
  • Not Synced
    the Soviet's successfully tested
  • Not Synced
the first inter-continental ballistic missile, the R-7,
  • Not Synced
the same rocket that would be used
  • Not Synced
to launch Sputnik two months later.
  • Not Synced
So, the scary thing about Sputnik
  • Not Synced
was not the orbiting ball itself,
  • Not Synced
but the fact that the same technology
  • Not Synced
could be used to launch a nuclear warhead
  • Not Synced
    at any city.
  • Not Synced
Not wanting to fall too far behind,
  • Not Synced
    President Eisenhower ordered the Navy
  • Not Synced
to speed up its own project
  • Not Synced
and launch a satellite as soon as possible.
  • Not Synced
    So, on December 6, 1957,
  • Not Synced
    excited people across the nation
  • Not Synced
tuned in to watch the live broadcast
  • Not Synced
as the Vanguard TV3 satellite took off
  • Not Synced
and crashed to the ground two seconds later.
  • Not Synced
The Vanguard failure was a huge embarassment
  • Not Synced
    for the United States.
  • Not Synced
    Newspapers printed headlines like,
  • Not Synced
    "Flopnik" and "Kaputnik".
  • Not Synced
And a Soviet delegate at the U.N. mockingly suggested
  • Not Synced
that the U.S. should receive foreign aid
  • Not Synced
    for a developing nation.

On October 4, 1957, the Soviet Union launched the satellite Sputnik and, with it, an international space race. The United States and the Soviet Union rushed to declare dominance of space for 18 years, until the two countries agreed to a more collaborative model. The real winner? Science. Jeff Steers describes the history -- and the benefits -- of the space race.
