The Science of Being Transgender ft. Gigi Gorgeous
-
0:00 - 0:02There's a lot of
misinformation out there -
0:02 - 0:04about what it means
to be a transgender -
0:04 - 0:07but recently,
Scientists have begun to look into -
0:07 - 0:09the Neurology, Physiology, and
Psychology -
0:09 - 0:10behind it.
-
0:11 - 0:12So today we're gonna
-
0:12 - 0:13break down what
Science does know -
0:13 - 0:15in a respectful and educational way
-
0:15 - 0:17Hey guys! I'm Gigi Gorgeous and,
-
0:18 - 0:20today, I'm here with
ASAPScience -
0:20 - 0:22to break down Science
of Being Transgender -
0:22 - 0:24Before we get to deep into it,
-
0:24 - 0:26we have to look at your genetic sex.
-
0:26 - 0:28Or the chromosomes you have.
-
0:28 - 0:30These were determine
right at fertilization -
0:30 - 0:32When the sperm cell from your father
-
0:32 - 0:34which carries an 'X' or a 'Y' chromosome
-
0:34 - 0:38fuse with the egg from your mother,
which carries an 'X' chromosome. -
0:38 - 0:41But until 6 or 7 weeks
after fertilization, -
0:41 - 0:43both 'XY' and 'XX' embryos
-
0:43 - 0:45have identical Gonads.
-
0:45 - 0:46Around 7 weeks
-
0:46 - 0:48the male sex organs start to develop
-
0:48 - 0:51because of a gene on 'Y' chromosome
-
0:51 - 0:52called 'SRY'
-
0:52 - 0:54It causes cells to become more specialized
-
0:54 - 0:56and these cells create 'Testosterone'
-
0:56 - 0:58which in turn triggers
the development -
0:58 - 1:00of structure like the penis & scrotum
-
1:00 - 1:02while other cells block female
-
1:02 - 1:04development by degenerating
the female ducts. -
1:04 - 1:06However,
in female development, -
1:06 - 1:08because there is no
-
1:08 - 1:10'Y' chromosome
with the 'SRY' gene -
1:10 - 1:12These ducts stay intact
and become -
1:12 - 1:14the uterus cervix,
upper vagina, and the oviduct -
1:14 - 1:17with the help of Estrogen, &
chemicals secreted -
1:17 - 1:18by the early kidney.
-
1:18 - 1:21but, it's not always
that simple, -
1:21 - 1:23there are sometimes even
RARE COMBINATIONS -
1:23 - 1:25like 'XXY',
-
1:25 - 1:26'XXX'
-
1:26 - 1:27'XXYY' etc.
-
1:27 - 1:30And even people
with 'XX" Chromosomes -
1:30 - 1:33that develop male genitals
& characteristics -
1:33 - 1:35due to a piece of the 'Y'
chromosome breaking off, -
1:35 - 1:38and switching places to
an 'X' chromosome. -
1:38 - 1:40But SEXUAL DIFFERENTIATION
in a brain, actually -
1:40 - 1:43happens much later
than Gonadal Differentiation. -
1:43 - 1:45And yes,
although controversial -
1:45 - 1:48Male and Female
brains have structural -
1:48 - 1:50and functional differences
between each other. -
1:50 - 1:52Studies have found
-
1:52 - 1:53that males generally
-
1:53 - 1:55have a larger cerebrum
cerebellum. -
1:55 - 1:56and hippo campus.
-
1:56 - 1:57While females have
-
1:57 - 1:59higher density left frontal lobe,
-
1:59 - 2:01and larger volumes
-
2:01 - 2:03in the right frontal lobe.
-
2:03 - 2:05So what exactly do we see
when we look at the brain? -
2:05 - 2:07of a transgender person?
-
2:07 - 2:08Several studies have shown that
-
2:08 - 2:10transgender brains
are both -
2:10 - 2:12structurally and functionally
-
2:12 - 2:14more similar to their experienced
gender identity -
2:14 - 2:16than their biological sex.
-
2:16 - 2:18One study found that transwomen who
-
2:18 - 2:20despite being assigned male at birth
-
2:20 - 2:22had a smaller female size structure
in the hypothalamus. -
2:23 - 2:25MRI scans also show the
-
2:25 - 2:27brain structures of trans people
-
2:27 - 2:29to be more similar in thickness into their
-
2:29 - 2:31experienced gender and not their sex.
-
2:31 - 2:33Finally, the pheromone
Androstadienone -
2:33 - 2:34causes
different hypothalamic -
2:34 - 2:36responses in male
and female brains -
2:36 - 2:37And, when individuals
-
2:37 - 2:39with Gender Dysphoria
were exposed to it, -
2:39 - 2:42hypothalamic response
-
2:42 - 2:43matches their perceived gender
-
2:43 - 2:45rather than their sex.
-
2:45 - 2:46These studies help to
highlight how -
2:46 - 2:48masculinization or
feminization -
2:48 - 2:51of the Gonads is not
always the same as the brain -
2:51 - 2:53and that there's a difference between
-
2:53 - 2:55your sex or your anatomy
& gender -
2:55 - 2:57or how you perceived
your own body. -
2:57 - 2:58There also seems to be
-
2:58 - 3:00a genetic component
to transgender identity. -
3:00 - 3:02Looking at family histories
-
3:02 - 3:03of gender identity
incongruence -
3:03 - 3:05seems to run in the family,
-
3:05 - 3:06meaning they maybe inherited
-
3:06 - 3:08The 'CYP17' gene which controls
-
3:08 - 3:10the body's level of sex hormones
-
3:10 - 3:13has a changed allele that is expressed
-
3:13 - 3:15frequently in trans man.
-
3:15 - 3:16Although, more
research could be done, -
3:16 - 3:19scientists are currently
at looking over -
3:19 - 3:213 Million DNA Markers
for transgender identity -
3:21 - 3:23to investigate any genetic
link for being trans. -
3:24 - 3:26Even though scientific studies
-
3:26 - 3:28validate the experience
of transgender people -
3:28 - 3:30There's still more suffering from
-
3:30 - 3:33depression and anxiety
than the general public. -
3:33 - 3:34The risk of suicide
-
3:34 - 3:36is more prominent in transgender people
-
3:36 - 3:38who have been rejected by their family
-
3:38 - 3:40discriminated in their workplace,
-
3:40 - 3:41or in health care.
-
3:41 - 3:43Sucide risks seems to
-
3:43 - 3:45decreased after gender transitioning.
-
3:45 - 3:47Suggesting that gender dysphoria can cause
-
3:47 - 3:49an extreme amount of emotional pain
-
3:49 - 3:51even to the point of suicide.
-
3:51 - 3:53If you, a family member, or a friend is
-
3:53 - 3:55suffering from gender dysphoria ,
-
3:55 - 3:57there are few links in the description
