What is inclusion ?
-
0:23 - 0:26I don't understand why
I'm at the back of the class -
0:26 - 0:28I wish I was like everyone else.
-
0:28 - 0:29I want to do what they do.
-
0:29 - 0:32But here I am doing
the same old number activity -
0:32 - 0:35watching as my classmates
learn something else. -
0:35 - 0:38Don't they know that they're
setting me up to fail? -
0:38 - 0:41Don't they know they
hold my future in their hands? -
0:41 - 0:43I want to work with my class,
-
0:43 - 0:47learn what they are learning
and do the activities they do. -
0:47 - 0:51But here I am, stuck at the back,
limited by low expectations, -
0:52 - 0:55Having a one-on-one teacher aide
just teaches me to rely on them -
0:55 - 0:58and means I get less attention
from the teacher. -
0:58 - 1:01I am not included in the classroom,
I am in the same room -
1:01 - 1:03but segregated from my peers,
-
1:03 - 1:07sat to the side or back working on
different things and missing out. -
1:07 - 1:10I want to be free to learn with my peers
-
1:10 - 1:13reach my full potential and be seen
to be like everyone else. -
1:14 - 1:16I need something to change.
-
1:32 - 1:36You may be wondering
what is wrong with this picture? -
1:36 - 1:39I'm in the classroom with my peers,
sitting in my seat, -
1:39 - 1:41learning the same things as
everyone else. -
1:42 - 1:45You may think that this is inclusion,
but it's not. -
1:45 - 1:50I am stiffled, limited and held back
from reaching my full potential. -
1:52 - 1:55Though I love my teacher aide,
I don't get to think for myself. -
1:56 - 1:59In fact, a lot of the time,
my teacher aide does it for me, -
1:59 - 2:02even whispering the answer
in my ear when I already know it. -
2:03 - 2:07The more she is with me
the more I realise that there is no point -
2:07 - 2:11in me thinking for myself because
she will give me the answer anyway. -
2:11 - 2:14I'm sure there are other kids
who also need her help, -
2:14 - 2:15does she need to be with just me?
-
2:15 - 2:18Can't she help others?
Surely if I need help -
2:18 - 2:22I can put my hand up and ask
my teacher like my friends do. -
2:22 - 2:25My friends and classmates want to help me
-
2:25 - 2:27but by having someone
right next to me they can't. -
2:27 - 2:29I need to learn from my peers
-
2:29 - 2:31be able to do group work
and be challenged. -
2:32 - 2:35I want to be allowed to fail
or succeed and learn from it. -
2:36 - 2:38I need something to change.
-
2:44 - 2:46Can you find me in the crowd?
-
2:47 - 2:51Inclusion is more than just a word,
it is a culture, a mindset -
2:51 - 2:54and an expectation that everyone can
and will learn and succeed -
2:54 - 2:56along ther age-appropriate peers.
-
2:57 - 3:01I know it can be challenging to include me
in the learning as sometimes -
3:01 - 3:04I migth require extra resources
and information -
3:04 - 3:08but giving me space to learn from
my teacher and peers is the best way -
3:08 - 3:10to challenge me and allow me to grow.
-
3:11 - 3:14I want to learn the same things
as my classmates, -
3:14 - 3:18and I want teachers to have the same
expectations of me as my friends. -
3:19 - 3:23My learning may need to me modified
but I still want the opportunity -
3:23 - 3:26to show what I can do,
not focus on what I can't. -
3:27 - 3:31Treat me the same as any other student
and whatch me flourish. -
3:31 - 3:35I will rise the challenge
of the expectations you set for me.

- What is inclusion ?
- Description:
-
A short video produced by Down Syndrome Queensland in conjunction with Griffith Film School and Pullenvale State School. The 4-minute video showcases the difference between integration, perceived inclusion and true inclusion in a classroom environment.
The vignettes are staged to demonstrate the differences between integration, perceived inclusion and true inclusion. Pullenvale State School is itself well on the journey to true inclusion and kindly participated in this video to help grow the understanding of what schools should be striving for.
