Getting fit by doing good | Alex Kenmure | TEDxExeter
-
0:09 - 0:12I've been thinking about gym memberships,
-
0:12 - 0:16in particular, all the gym memberships
I've underused in my life. -
0:17 - 0:20I'm definitely one of those people
who likes the idea of being fit -
0:20 - 0:24far more than the actual
reality of getting fit. -
0:24 - 0:28In my youth, I really, really
wanted Brad Pitt's abs. -
0:28 - 0:29(Laughter)
-
0:29 - 0:33These days, it's Jason Statham's
chiselled physique. -
0:33 - 0:36Every now and then, I'll get
all excited about getting buff -
0:36 - 0:39and sign up to my local gym.
-
0:39 - 0:44"This is it," I tell myself, "from now on,
I'm going to be fit, healthy and happy." -
0:45 - 0:47I do not have Brad Pitt's abs,
-
0:47 - 0:50and I only have Jason Statham's hairline.
-
0:50 - 0:51(Laughter)
-
0:51 - 0:55The sad truth is every time I've signed up
to a gym, I've barely attended. -
0:55 - 1:00When I have gone, I've found it
a truly miserable experience. -
1:00 - 1:03And I think I've boiled that down
to two main reasons: -
1:03 - 1:06connection and purpose.
-
1:07 - 1:11I find the gym a particularly
isolating environment. -
1:11 - 1:16Here I am, surrounded by all these people
I have at least one thing in common with, -
1:16 - 1:19and I couldn't feel
more distant from them. -
1:19 - 1:23Almost every machine caters
for one person only, can't be shared; -
1:23 - 1:26we all have headphones in
to block each other out; -
1:26 - 1:28and we actively avoid eye contact,
-
1:28 - 1:32never mind strike up conversation
for fear of looking weird or creepy. -
1:33 - 1:37That sounds more like my morning commute
than it has any right to. -
1:38 - 1:41Then there's the act of exercising
in an artificial environment. -
1:41 - 1:43Lifting things that don't need lifting,
-
1:43 - 1:47and generating all this energy that has
no meaning or impact on anyone else. -
1:47 - 1:49(Laughter)
-
1:49 - 1:52The treadmill is the perfect embodiment
of my life at its worst: -
1:52 - 1:56going nowhere fast
and paying for the privelage. -
1:56 - 1:58(Laughter)
-
1:58 - 2:00It's been said that
if exercise were a pill, -
2:00 - 2:02it would be prescribed to everybody,
-
2:02 - 2:05such are the wonderous
health and wellbeing benefits. -
2:05 - 2:09That may be the case
but I still find it hard to swallow, -
2:09 - 2:10and I don't think I'm alone.
-
2:11 - 2:14In 2018, gym memberships in the UK
-
2:14 - 2:18rose to nearly ten million
across 7,000 locations. -
2:18 - 2:21However we still have
a physical activity challenge -
2:21 - 2:22with around a third of UK adults
-
2:22 - 2:26not getting the miminum
recommended levels of exercise. -
2:26 - 2:30We know we ought to be fitter,
many of us even want to be. -
2:31 - 2:33We just don't enjoy it.
-
2:33 - 2:34So what if the answer
-
2:34 - 2:38isn't more ways for us to exercise
and feel bad about ourselves, -
2:38 - 2:42but instead more ways for us to connect
and feel good about ourselves? -
2:42 - 2:45This is where GoodGym came into my life.
-
2:45 - 2:50GoodGym is a community of runners
who get fit by doing good. -
2:51 - 2:55We run in groups to help
community projects such as city farms, -
2:55 - 2:57community centres or food banks.
-
2:58 - 3:00We undertake missions
for older neighbours, -
3:00 - 3:04helping out with tasks around the home
such as changing a lightbulb. -
3:05 - 3:07And we visit isolated older people,
-
3:07 - 3:10giving them an opportunity
to meet a younger local runner, -
3:10 - 3:12and in turn, become that runner's coach.
-
3:13 - 3:15GoodGym makes the act of getting fit
-
3:15 - 3:19a way to be both social
and make a difference. -
3:20 - 3:24It has grown from a small project
in Tower Hamlets back in 2009, -
3:24 - 3:28to a UK-wide social movement
with around 1000 people every week, -
3:28 - 3:30getting active and doing good.
-
3:30 - 3:33Be that helping older neighbours
feel more connected, -
3:33 - 3:36setting up beds in a homeless shelter,
-
3:36 - 3:38building toilet platforms
for water voles - -
3:38 - 3:41yep, that exists apparently,
which is great! - -
3:41 - 3:42(Laughter)
-
3:42 - 3:44and shovelling a lot of compost.
-
3:45 - 3:47What drives the social movement
-
3:47 - 3:51are the stories behind
everybody who takes part. -
3:51 - 3:54We're not just missing
something in our exercise. -
3:54 - 3:57Quite often we're missing something
in the way we live our lives as well - -
3:57 - 4:01a sense of belonging, a sense of purpose.
-
4:01 - 4:05My GoodGym journey started
six years ago in Camden. -
4:05 - 4:08Running each week to a different
community project, making new friends, -
4:08 - 4:11and acheiving ever further distances.
-
4:11 - 4:15I used to think that five kilometres
was the absolute furthest -
4:15 - 4:17a human being could
or should travel by foot. -
4:17 - 4:19(Laughter)
-
4:19 - 4:22Within six months, I'd completed
my first half marathon, -
4:22 - 4:25supported not just
by my fellow GoodGymers, -
4:25 - 4:28but by all the projects we'd supported
along the way as well. -
4:29 - 4:31Then my world shook.
-
4:32 - 4:34All of a sudden,
my mum became very, very ill, -
4:34 - 4:38very, very quickly, and she passed away.
-
4:39 - 4:42I felt a lot of horrible
things at that time, -
4:42 - 4:47but one of the things I struggled with
was feeling very, very useless. -
4:49 - 4:53My first GoodGym run after my mum's death
became very important to me. -
4:53 - 4:56It wasn't about exercising
to make myself feel better. -
4:56 - 4:59It wasn't even really about
seeing my friends. -
4:59 - 5:04I think there was a need to take all that
negative energy and chaos inside me -
5:04 - 5:06and know it could be used
for something positive. -
5:07 - 5:11That evening, we were running to bring
an old community space back into use - -
5:11 - 5:14ripping up carpets,
repairing beaten up walls. -
5:15 - 5:20My vivid memory of that evening is,
first-off, not being very good at it; -
5:20 - 5:23being covered head to toe
in plaster and dust; -
5:23 - 5:26laughing a huge amount;
-
5:26 - 5:30and most importantly to me,
just feeling useful again. -
5:31 - 5:34You know, in a lot of ways,
my real GoodGym journey started that day. -
5:35 - 5:39As I increased my running,
now I was increasing my volunteering. -
5:39 - 5:42I started to do jobs
for old people in the community, -
5:42 - 5:45mainly clearing gardens
or moving furniture. -
5:46 - 5:49I came to appreciate
how a simple act of kindness -
5:49 - 5:53can completely transform a person's
sense of self-worth and identity. -
5:54 - 5:56And then I got matched with a coach.
-
5:56 - 5:59An absolutely beautiful,
wonderful woman called Marian, -
5:59 - 6:03who taught me running up a massive hill
to deliver a TV Weekly Magazine -
6:03 - 6:07was far more motivating to me
than how chiseled my stomach looked. -
6:08 - 6:13In all honesty, I've never been fitter,
happier, or more confident -
6:13 - 6:17than when running to a community project,
helping someone with a task, -
6:17 - 6:19or visiting my coach.
-
6:19 - 6:23And you know what? I've not completely
given up on those abs of steel. -
6:23 - 6:24(Laughter)
-
6:24 - 6:26But I'm confident now
that if I'm going to find them, -
6:26 - 6:30it's not going to be
in a weird room full of machines, -
6:30 - 6:33but it might just be amongst
all the people I've connected with -
6:33 - 6:35and who make me feel
like I mean something. -
6:36 - 6:37Thank you.
-
6:37 - 6:41(Cheers) (Applause)
