Converting decimals to fractions example 1 | Decimals | Pre-Algebra | Khan Academy

  • 0:00 - 0:06
    Let's see if we can
    write 0.15 as a fraction.
  • 0:06 - 0:08
    So the important
    thing here is to look
  • 0:08 - 0:11
    at what place these
    digits are in.
  • 0:11 - 0:13
So this 1 right over here,
this is in the tenths place,
  • 0:13 - 0:17
    so you could view
    that as 1 times 1/10.
  • 0:17 - 0:21
This 5 right over here is
    in the hundredths place,
  • 0:21 - 0:24
    so you could view
    that as 5 times 1/100.
  • 0:24 - 0:26
So if I were to rewrite
    this, I can rewrite this
  • 0:26 - 0:30
as the sum of-- this 1
    represents 1 times 1/10,
  • 0:30 - 0:33
    so that would literally
    be 1/10 plus--
  • 0:33 - 0:37
    and this 5 represents
    5 times 1/100,
  • 0:37 - 0:40
so it would be plus 5/100.
  • 0:40 - 0:42
    And if we want to
    add them up, we
  • 0:42 - 0:44
    want to find a
    common denominator.
  • 0:44 - 0:46
    The common denominator is 100.
  • 0:46 - 0:49
    Both 10 and-- the
    least common multiple.
  • 0:49 - 0:53
    100 is a multiple
    of both 10 and 100.
  • 0:53 - 0:56
    So we can rewrite this
    as something over 100
  • 0:56 - 1:00
    plus something over 100.
  • 1:00 - 1:01
    This isn't going to change.
  • 1:01 - 1:03
    This was already 5/100.
  • 1:03 - 1:05
    If we multiply the
    denominator here
  • 1:05 - 1:08
    by 10-- that's what we did;
    we multiplied it by 10--
  • 1:08 - 1:10
then we're going to have to
    multiply this numerator by 10.
  • 1:10 - 1:13
    And so this is the
    same thing as 10/100.
  • 1:13 - 1:14
And now we're ready to add.
  • 1:14 - 1:21
    This is the same thing
    as-- 10 plus 5 is 15/100.
  • 1:21 - 1:23
And you could have done that
    a little bit quicker just
  • 1:23 - 1:24
    by inspecting this.
  • 1:24 - 1:26
    You would say, look, my
    smallest place right over here
  • 1:26 - 1:27
    is in the hundredths place.
  • 1:27 - 1:30
    Instead of calling this
    1/10, I could call this
  • 1:30 - 1:31
    literally 10/100.
  • 1:31 - 1:36
    Or I could say this
    whole thing is 15/100.
  • 1:36 - 1:38
And now if I want to reduce
    this to lowest terms,
  • 1:38 - 1:40
we can-- let's see, both the
    numerator and the denominator
  • 1:40 - 1:42
    are divisible by 5.
  • 1:42 - 1:45
So let's divide them both by 5.
  • 1:45 - 1:48
    And so the numerator,
    15 divided by 5, is 3.
  • 1:48 - 1:52
    The denominator, 100
    divided by 5, is 20.
  • 1:52 - 1:56
    And that's about as
    simplified as we can get.
