Converting decimals to fractions example 1 | Decimals | Pre-Algebra | Khan Academy
-
0:00 - 0:06Let's see if we can
write 0.15 as a fraction. -
0:06 - 0:08So the important
thing here is to look -
0:08 - 0:11at what place these
digits are in. -
0:11 - 0:13So this 1 right over here,
this is in the tenths place, -
0:13 - 0:17so you could view
that as 1 times 1/10. -
0:17 - 0:21This 5 right over here is
in the hundredths place, -
0:21 - 0:24so you could view
that as 5 times 1/100. -
0:24 - 0:26So if I were to rewrite
this, I can rewrite this -
0:26 - 0:30as the sum of-- this 1
represents 1 times 1/10, -
0:30 - 0:33so that would literally
be 1/10 plus-- -
0:33 - 0:37and this 5 represents
5 times 1/100, -
0:37 - 0:40so it would be plus 5/100.
-
0:40 - 0:42And if we want to
add them up, we -
0:42 - 0:44want to find a
common denominator. -
0:44 - 0:46The common denominator is 100.
-
0:46 - 0:49Both 10 and-- the
least common multiple. -
0:49 - 0:53100 is a multiple
of both 10 and 100. -
0:53 - 0:56So we can rewrite this
as something over 100 -
0:56 - 1:00plus something over 100.
-
1:00 - 1:01This isn't going to change.
-
1:01 - 1:03This was already 5/100.
-
1:03 - 1:05If we multiply the
denominator here -
1:05 - 1:08by 10-- that's what we did;
we multiplied it by 10-- -
1:08 - 1:10then we're going to have to
multiply this numerator by 10. -
1:10 - 1:13And so this is the
same thing as 10/100. -
1:13 - 1:14And now we're ready to add.
-
1:14 - 1:21This is the same thing
as-- 10 plus 5 is 15/100. -
1:21 - 1:23And you could have done that
a little bit quicker just -
1:23 - 1:24by inspecting this.
-
1:24 - 1:26You would say, look, my
smallest place right over here -
1:26 - 1:27is in the hundredths place.
-
1:27 - 1:30Instead of calling this
1/10, I could call this -
1:30 - 1:31literally 10/100.
-
1:31 - 1:36Or I could say this
whole thing is 15/100. -
1:36 - 1:38And now if I want to reduce
this to lowest terms, -
1:38 - 1:40we can-- let's see, both the
numerator and the denominator -
1:40 - 1:42are divisible by 5.
-
1:42 - 1:45So let's divide them both by 5.
-
1:45 - 1:48And so the numerator,
15 divided by 5, is 3. -
1:48 - 1:52The denominator, 100
divided by 5, is 20. -
1:52 - 1:56And that's about as
simplified as we can get.
