-
0:16 - 0:19Social media is a drug,
-
0:19 - 0:22and I, like so many people today,
am totally addicted. -
0:22 - 0:24I'm addicted to scrolling.
-
0:24 - 0:28I'm addicted to making every account
on every social media site look perfect. -
0:28 - 0:31I'm addicted to liking, to commenting,
-
0:31 - 0:35to seeing photos of random celebrities,
to seeing drama of random celebrities, -
0:35 - 0:40and to refreshing the same page
over and over again. -
0:40 - 0:41And with every drug comes a high--
-
0:41 - 0:44a moment when one feels
they're on top of the world -
0:44 - 0:45and nothing can stop them...
-
0:45 - 0:49until everything just comes
crashing down again. -
0:49 - 0:54For me, even if the picture I've posted
looks nothing like me or isn't real at all, -
0:54 - 0:57when the likes and the comments
start pouring in, that's the high. -
0:57 - 1:00I feel people MUST like me,
my self-esteem goes up, -
1:00 - 1:03and I feel this temporary happiness
and this temporary joy... -
1:03 - 1:05until a couple hours pass by
-
1:05 - 1:07and the likes and the
comments slow down, -
1:07 - 1:11and me and my self-esteem
just kind of go crashing down again. -
1:11 - 1:14Social media can slash
down your confidence -
1:14 - 1:18and, in a fraction of a second, make you feel
like the loneliest person in the world. -
1:18 - 1:23And this is a problem that persists now
within our modern society. -
1:23 - 1:25With a couple of taps
on a smartphone, -
1:25 - 1:28anyone can make any account
on almost any social media site -
1:28 - 1:31and make up a whole life
that they don't even have. -
1:31 - 1:33And as our technology gets
better every single day, -
1:33 - 1:36it becomes easier and easier
for people to post a picture -
1:36 - 1:38where they look
20 pounds skinnier, -
1:38 - 1:40to Photoshop themselves
into a party they never went to, -
1:40 - 1:43or in more extreme cases,
do things like this, -
1:43 - 1:46where they put a toilet seat
up against a window -
1:46 - 1:50so it looks like they're going
on an exotic vacation, -
1:50 - 1:52even if they're actually not.
-
1:52 - 1:55This phenomenon is
particularly prominent -
1:55 - 1:58in what is now known as
"influencers" on social media. -
1:58 - 2:02Influencers look like
they live the amazing life. -
2:02 - 2:06They are usually on any social media platform
(but specifically Instagram and YouTube) -
2:06 - 2:09and have millions of
followers or subscribers. -
2:09 - 2:11As I said before,
their life looks perfect -
2:11 - 2:15and even companies use them to
promote products for easy advertising. -
2:15 - 2:18Looking at a social
media influencer -
2:18 - 2:22can make the average person
feel pretty insecure at times. -
2:22 - 2:25An example of one of these
influencers is James Charles -
2:25 - 2:27[audience members cheer
and Sam chuckles] -
2:27 - 2:31a 19-year-old makeup artist
with over 15 million followers. -
2:31 - 2:37I'll admit it: He doesn't look bad
on any single photo on his Instagram. -
2:37 - 2:38HIs makeup is always flawless
-
2:38 - 2:43and he never shows you the time or
the money it takes to put all that on, -
2:43 - 2:46so it looks quick and easy
and like he did it in a minute. -
2:46 - 2:50Another one,
Hailey Baldwin Bieber. -
2:50 - 2:55She has over 18.3 million followers
and she posts pictures of herself -
2:55 - 2:57on the most beautiful
beaches in the world. -
2:57 - 3:00Spoiler alert: Nobody
wakes up and looks like that. -
3:00 - 3:05It takes time, energy, money,
and so many different resources. -
3:05 - 3:10And I'm not a fancy influencer
but I'll admit, I do it myself. -
3:10 - 3:14I mean, I know this talk is probably gonna
be shared somewhere on the internet, -
3:14 - 3:17so I dressed up
better than I normally do. -
3:17 - 3:20In real life,
my hair is large and curly, -
3:20 - 3:24I wear glasses, and I prefer to wear
big sweatshirts over anything else, -
3:24 - 3:26but on every single
photo on my Instagram, -
3:26 - 3:29my hair has been straightened,
I have my contacts in, my makeup's done, -
3:29 - 3:32and I'm dressed up
far better than I do regularly. -
3:32 - 3:34Me, influencers,
and so many other people now -
3:34 - 3:38only put on Instagram what
we want other people to see. -
3:38 - 3:40When you're scrolling
through Instagram, -
3:40 - 3:43you only see what the Instagrammer
has specifically designed, -
3:43 - 3:44specific moments in their time
-
3:44 - 3:47when they're looking happy
and they're dressed up -
3:47 - 3:50and no one has to see
any other part of their life. -
3:50 - 3:54According to sociologist Julia Albright
from University of Southern California, -
3:54 - 3:58"People's persona online may be
much more fabulous, much more exciting -
3:58 - 4:01than the everyday life
that they're leading." -
4:01 - 4:04And this isn't a problem
just for teenagers anymore. -
4:04 - 4:06I mean, my grandparents
have Facebook. -
4:06 - 4:11I was born in 2001 on this weird,
Generation Z/Millennial cusp, -
4:11 - 4:14and I'll find that I spend hours
on Instagram and Snapchat -
4:14 - 4:16and just end up
feeling sorry for myself. -
4:16 - 4:19I wonder why people I haven't
even spoken to in years -
4:19 - 4:22look like they have their
entire life together and I don't. -
4:22 - 4:25I wonder why it looks like
everyone's having the best time ever, -
4:25 - 4:29and with these photos quite
literally in my face all the time, -
4:29 - 4:32it's so easy to wonder:
"Why am I not that pretty?" -
4:32 - 4:36"Why am I not that skinny?" or
"Why am I not that popular or cool?" -
4:36 - 4:39I had a conversation with
a teacher of mine, as well, -
4:39 - 4:43a millennial, who says one of the worst parts
about social media is going onto Facebook -
4:43 - 4:47and seeing people she used to go to high
school with now raising their own families. -
4:47 - 4:50This makes her wonder:
Is she raising her family right? -
4:50 - 4:52And how can she make
her son just as good -
4:52 - 4:55or even better than every single
other kid she sees on Facebook? -
4:55 - 4:57And I've seen it in my
little sister too, Generation Z. -
4:57 - 4:59I see her swiping
through Snapchat, -
4:59 - 5:03wondering how it looks like every
other middle schooler in the world -
5:03 - 5:05is the most secure
person in the world. -
5:05 - 5:08(We all know that's
probably not true.) -
5:08 - 5:11Although social media
can make us so lonely, -
5:11 - 5:16it's so easy to feel alone when it looks
like every other person has it together -
5:16 - 5:18and you feel like you don't.
-
5:18 - 5:23So it shouldn't take any big scientific
discovery to promote the claim -
5:23 - 5:26that social media has detrimental
effects on our mental health, -
5:26 - 5:29but scientists have done the study
and it has proven true. -
5:29 - 5:32Melissa G. Hunt from University
of Pennsylvania stated -
5:32 - 5:35that using less social media
than you normally do would lead -
5:35 - 5:38to significant decreases in
both depression and loneliness. -
5:38 - 5:43And George Aalbers from
University of Amsterdam stated: -
5:43 - 5:45"...passive media use...
co-occurred -
5:45 - 5:48with a loss of interest, concentration
problems, fatigue, and loneliness." -
5:48 - 5:51So what do we do?
-
5:51 - 5:53We can't just avoid social media.
It's everywhere. -
5:53 - 5:57It's on our news, it's in our schools,
it's in our homes, it's in our workplaces. -
5:57 - 6:00It's impossible to just forget about it,
-
6:00 - 6:03but it has given us a huge
advantage in some ways. -
6:03 - 6:09We have the ability to communicate
more than ever before, and that's amazing. -
6:09 - 6:10I'm about to go to college
-
6:10 - 6:12and I've talked with people
from all around the world -
6:12 - 6:15that I'll be going to
school with next year, -
6:15 - 6:17and I've talked with my
roommate so many times. -
6:17 - 6:18When my parents went to college,
-
6:18 - 6:21they had no idea who they'd
be living with for the next year. -
6:21 - 6:24And my TED Talks from the past two years
have been put on YouTube, -
6:24 - 6:29and my message about mental health has
spread to people who I will never know. -
6:29 - 6:33So in the words of Stan Lee and
his favorite comic book, "Spiderman," -
6:33 - 6:36"With great power
comes great responsibility." -
6:36 - 6:38Social media has given
us an amazing advantage -
6:38 - 6:42to communicate, to share ideas, to bring
people from all around the word together; -
6:42 - 6:46but it has also made it easier for people
to fake their lives, fake a personality, -
6:46 - 6:48and for us to become more insecure.
-
6:48 - 6:53And going back to the Instagram influencers,
it's hard sometimes to just remind ourselves -
6:53 - 6:57that not everyone is gonna
look like their favorite celebrity. -
6:57 - 7:02Jameela Jamil, an actress known
for the NBC show "The Good Place" -
7:02 - 7:05has now started a
campaign called "I Weigh." -
7:05 - 7:08The purpose of her campaign is
to call out and show celebrities -
7:08 - 7:10and point out to regular people
-
7:10 - 7:14that celebrities and influencers have
amazing resources to some of the best food, -
7:14 - 7:18the best personal trainers, the best gyms,
and the best magazine editors in the world. -
7:18 - 7:22So no wonder they look better
than the average person. -
7:22 - 7:26Jamil has also called out celebrities who
are now using their fans' weight insecurities -
7:26 - 7:30to sell diet pills so everyone
can look just as good as they do. -
7:30 - 7:33Jamil has become the beginning
of an amazing campaign -
7:33 - 7:35to make us feel better
in our bodies -
7:35 - 7:39and NOT to compare ourselves with every
single person we see on the internet. -
7:39 - 7:42And sometimes, when
you're just at your worst, -
7:42 - 7:45it's better just to delete
the apps off your phone. -
7:45 - 7:48Sometimes, as I said,
when I'm feeling my worst, -
7:48 - 7:50I just delete the apps off my phone.
-
7:50 - 7:53I don't delete the accounts necessarily,
but without the apps physically there, -
7:53 - 7:56there's nothing for me to be
just checking throughout the day. -
7:56 - 7:59And usually I can go
for weeks at a time -
7:59 - 8:02until I feel comfortable enough
that I can re-download it -
8:02 - 8:04and it won't affect my
mental health so much. -
8:04 - 8:08So I know it's hard,
but I ask all of you: -
8:08 - 8:10Take one day, just delete
the apps off your phone, -
8:10 - 8:14whatever it is (Instagram, Snapchat,
Facebook, Reddit, Tumblr, MySpace). -
8:14 - 8:18Whatever it is, delete it for one day,
-
8:18 - 8:22and I promise that it'll be like a
huge weight taken off your chest. -
8:22 - 8:24And who knows, you may find
-
8:24 - 8:26that you have more time
to do things you like, -
8:26 - 8:29like making music, dancing,
or volunteering with kids. -
8:29 - 8:33So if there's one message
that you take from this talk, -
8:33 - 8:36it's [that] I hope you know
that you are not defined -
8:36 - 8:39by the amount of likes and comments
on your posts on social media. -
8:39 - 8:44Social media is not real, and no way can
a single account on a social media website -
8:44 - 8:50encapsulate the entire brilliant personality
of a single human being. Thank you. -
8:50 - 8:53[cheers and applause]
