How my Rubik's cube made me a "finisher" | Cyrus Shams | TEDxYouth@WellspringLC
-
0:13 - 0:15About eight months ago, at the beach,
-
0:15 - 0:17a close friend of mine
picked up a Rubik's cube -
0:17 - 0:19and began solving in front of me.
-
0:19 - 0:21It looked pretty easy,
the way he was handling it. -
0:21 - 0:23So I grabbed it and gave it a shot.
-
0:23 - 0:26One hour later, I was
frustrated and lowered - -
0:26 - 0:28my confidence just ... gone.
-
0:28 - 0:32I wasn't able to solve one side, not one.
-
0:32 - 0:33About a week after,
-
0:33 - 0:36a family friend bought me
a Rubik's cube as a gift. -
0:36 - 0:39Now, with the cube,
I could try and solve it, -
0:39 - 0:41without anybody there to judge me,
-
0:41 - 0:43without me feeling stupid or foolish.
-
0:43 - 0:47And so began a daily challenge
to learn how to solve the cube. -
0:48 - 0:52Within the first 24 hours,
I became obsessed with the cube. -
0:52 - 0:55I took it with me everywhere I went:
-
0:55 - 0:56on the school bus,
-
0:56 - 0:58at the dinner table,
-
0:58 - 0:59in bed at night,
-
0:59 - 1:01and yes, even in class,
-
1:01 - 1:03where it did get confiscated
more than once. -
1:03 - 1:05(Laughter)
-
1:05 - 1:07I threw myself at the cube.
-
1:07 - 1:09I went on dozens
of instructional YouTube videos, -
1:09 - 1:13and very quickly, I discovered
many key algorithms that could help me. -
1:13 - 1:16So first, in order to solve the cube,
-
1:16 - 1:20first you must solve a cross on any side.
-
1:21 - 1:25Then fill in the four corners,
giving you your first side. -
1:26 - 1:28And then solving the first
two layers of the cube, -
1:28 - 1:31and finally solving
the last side, known as PLL, -
1:31 - 1:33and orient the last layer.
-
1:33 - 1:35And with all this practice,
-
1:35 - 1:39soon I was able to solve
one side, then two, -
1:39 - 1:42and with all this practice,
I was able to solve ... -
1:45 - 1:47the whole thing.
-
1:47 - 1:50(Cheers)
-
1:50 - 1:53(Applause)
-
1:56 - 1:59I'd realized solving
the cube once or twice -
1:59 - 2:01wasn't the main part
of the cube addiction. -
2:01 - 2:04And, in fact, pushing
the challenge further, -
2:04 - 2:06learning how to solve the cube
with my eyes closed -
2:06 - 2:08or attempting to beat my speed record.
-
2:08 - 2:10And by the time I'd cracked the cube,
-
2:10 - 2:12I was already interested
in other cubes out there, -
2:12 - 2:15like the two-by-two,
and the three-by-three, -
2:17 - 2:19four-by-four, and the five-by-five,
-
2:20 - 2:23and the pyramid and countless others.
-
2:24 - 2:27Honestly, the world of cubing
is extraordinary. -
2:27 - 2:31During this long cubing experience,
actually I learned something pretty great. -
2:31 - 2:34Tackling the Rubik's challenge
one step at a time, -
2:34 - 2:38memorizing algorithm sequences
and techniques made me realize -
2:38 - 2:43us humans are capable of doing
anything that we put our minds to. -
2:43 - 2:46That may seem impossible,
may seem beyond our capacity. -
2:46 - 2:47I know.
-
2:47 - 2:50Now, don't roll your eyes
at this neat little cliché, -
2:50 - 2:53because there really have been
practical results from this, for me. -
2:53 - 2:57For instance, before the cubing
world entered my life, -
2:57 - 3:00when I lost an item, I'd never bother
or take my time to search for it, -
3:00 - 3:02and I'd just buy a new one.
-
3:02 - 3:05But now I think of different ways
and strategies to search, -
3:05 - 3:07and I'll search and search
until I find it. -
3:07 - 3:10Just another challenge to be cracked.
-
3:10 - 3:12When I hear about something
that catches my eye, -
3:12 - 3:14a problem that needs solving,
-
3:14 - 3:16something I've never heard of,
-
3:16 - 3:18I immediately go on the Web,
-
3:18 - 3:21search it up, and try to uncover
every single aspect. -
3:22 - 3:25For example, do any of you know
what sleep paralysis is? -
3:25 - 3:26Ask me; I know all about it.
-
3:26 - 3:28Or how storms are caused,
-
3:28 - 3:30or about astral projection,
-
3:30 - 3:34or lucid dreaming, or the most bizarre
things you could think of. -
3:35 - 3:37Basically, if it grabs my attention,
-
3:37 - 3:40I'll learn about it
until I am fully satisfied. -
3:40 - 3:45In short, because of this cube,
I've become a "finisher." -
3:46 - 3:47Now the reason why -
-
3:47 - 3:50(Applause)
-
3:54 - 3:57Now the reason why I think that
is because the other day, -
3:57 - 4:00a teacher pointed out
something really interesting: -
4:00 - 4:03Why are kids in other countries
more competitive? -
4:03 - 4:04Are they naturally smarter?
-
4:04 - 4:05No.
-
4:05 - 4:07The secret is - it's in their habits.
-
4:08 - 4:12Kids that live in Japan, China,
India or Iran, where I'm from, -
4:12 - 4:14live in a culture of persistence.
-
4:14 - 4:15That's right.
-
4:15 - 4:16They persist at things.
-
4:16 - 4:19They keep on trying and trying
until they finally get it right. -
4:19 - 4:21However, many of us kids
-
4:21 - 4:24still live in a generation
of immediate gratification, -
4:24 - 4:26meaning we want things now.
-
4:26 - 4:29If we can't have it, solve it,
fix it, finish it, complete it -
4:29 - 4:31within a short period of time,
-
4:31 - 4:32we just lose interest,
-
4:32 - 4:34we just give up.
-
4:35 - 4:38Because of this cube,
this little colorful cube -
4:39 - 4:41has opened up a whole new way
of thinking in my life -
4:41 - 4:46that's really helped me with my school,
my work and my own interests. -
4:46 - 4:49But I am nowhere as perfect yet
as, of course, I would like to be. -
4:49 - 4:51Except if I want to do something,
-
4:52 - 4:54within time, with a lot of practice,
-
4:54 - 4:56I'll master it, I'll just go for it.
-
4:56 - 4:59It's all a matter of curiosity,
-
4:59 - 5:00persistence,
-
5:00 - 5:02one foot in front of the other,
-
5:02 - 5:04and best of all, satisfaction.
-
5:04 - 5:05Try it!
-
5:05 - 5:08(Cheers)
-
5:08 - 5:11(Applause)

- Description:
-
Cyrus Shams, 13, shares how a Rubik's cube got under his skin and helped him discover the "culture of persistence" in an era where kids want things fast, easy and with minimal effort. Funny thing is ... he has never felt more satisfied.
Cyrus Shams is a seventh-grade student at Wellspring Learning Community. He is part of the Robotics club and has an inexplicable obsession for the Rubik's cube.
