Meaningful Life | Teaching by Thich Nhat Hanh

  • 0:05 - 0:08
    Many people think of
  • 0:08 - 0:10
    happiness as
  • 0:10 - 0:11
    the success
  • 0:13 - 0:15
in the daily life to obtain
  • 0:15 - 0:18
    fame, money,
  • 0:19 - 0:21
    and sensual pleasures.
  • 0:26 - 0:28
    And, if we look
  • 0:28 - 0:30
around, we will see that many people
  • 0:30 - 0:32
    have fame, have wealth,
  • 0:35 - 0:38
    trying lot of sensual pleasures.
  • 0:39 - 0:41
But they are not really happy.
  • 0:41 - 0:43
    In fact, they
  • 0:43 - 0:44
    suffer
  • 0:45 - 0:47
    quite a lot.
  • 0:50 - 0:51
    And we know that
  • 0:52 - 0:54
    that is because they have
  • 0:54 - 0:56
not been able to touch the spiritual
  • 0:56 - 0:57
    life.
  • 0:58 - 1:00
    Their life has no
  • 1:00 - 1:01
    meaning.
  • 1:05 - 1:07
Because life has no meaning, they
  • 1:07 - 1:09
    are seeking only for sensual
  • 1:09 - 1:11
    pleasures, for fame,
  • 1:11 - 1:12
    for profit.
  • 1:19 - 1:20
    We know
  • 1:21 - 1:22
    that
  • 1:23 - 1:24
    without some
  • 1:26 - 1:27
    stability,
  • 1:31 - 1:35
    some compassion within ourselves,
  • 1:39 - 1:40
    happiness
  • 1:40 - 1:42
does not seem to be something
  • 1:43 - 1:44
    real.
  • 1:47 - 1:49
    When you have some stability
  • 1:49 - 1:50
    inside,
  • 1:52 - 1:54
    when you feel free inside,
  • 1:56 - 1:58
and when you are able to feel compassion
  • 1:58 - 2:00
    for those around you
  • 2:00 - 2:01
    who suffer,
  • 2:03 - 2:05
    and then suddenly life
  • 2:06 - 2:07
    has some meaning.
  • 2:10 - 2:11
When you are able to do something,
  • 2:11 - 2:14
    or to say something
  • 2:14 - 2:15
    that can
  • 2:16 - 2:18
    alleviate the suffering
  • 2:18 - 2:20
    of the people around,
  • 2:21 - 2:23
    the animals, and
  • 2:23 - 2:24
    the vegetables around,
  • 2:25 - 2:28
suddenly you see that your life has
  • 2:28 - 2:29
    a meaning.
  • 2:32 - 2:33
    Compassion fabricates
  • 2:34 - 2:36
    that substance in us.
  • 2:38 - 2:40
    Compassion gives
  • 2:40 - 2:42
    a sense to our life,
  • 2:43 - 2:45
gives a meaning to our life.
  • 2:46 - 2:47
    You feel that
  • 2:48 - 2:49
    you are useful.
  • 2:50 - 2:53
    You can make people suffer
  • 2:53 - 2:54
    less.
  • 2:54 - 2:56
    You can offer some
  • 2:57 - 3:00
    stability, some freedom, and some
  • 3:00 - 3:03
    joy to the people, to
  • 3:03 - 3:05
    the living beings around
  • 3:05 - 3:07
you. And suddenly your life has
  • 3:07 - 3:08
    a meaning.
  • 3:09 - 3:11
And when your life has a meaning,
  • 3:11 - 3:14
    you are content.
  • 3:16 - 3:17
You don't have the need to
  • 3:17 - 3:19
    run after sensual pleasures.
  • 3:21 - 3:23
    Those who run after sensual
  • 3:23 - 3:25
    pleasures and only
  • 3:25 - 3:27
    do that, just because
  • 3:27 - 3:28
    they do not have...
  • 3:29 - 3:31
    their life has no meaning.
  • 3:35 - 3:38
    And if you are capable
  • 3:38 - 3:40
    of lessening the suffering
  • 3:40 - 3:41
    around you,
  • 3:42 - 3:43
then you are also capable of
  • 3:43 - 3:45
    living a simple life.
  • 3:48 - 3:50
    You don't need to consume
  • 3:50 - 3:52
    much, and yet you are
  • 3:52 - 3:55
    much happier than those people
  • 3:55 - 3:57
who make a lot of money
  • 3:57 - 3:59
    and who consume a lot.
  • 4:10 - 4:11
    Today is a beautiful day.
