Virtual Choir Live
-
0:01 - 0:02In 1991 I had
-
0:02 - 0:05maybe the most profound and transformative
-
0:05 - 0:07experience of my life.
-
0:07 - 0:11I was in the third year of my seven-year undergraduate degree.
-
0:11 - 0:14I took a couple victory laps in there.
-
0:14 - 0:18And I was on a college choir tour up in Northern California,
-
0:18 - 0:20and we had stopped for the day after all day on the bus,
-
0:20 - 0:23and we were relaxing next to this beautiful
-
0:23 - 0:25idyllic lake in the mountains.
-
0:25 - 0:29And there were crickets and birds and frogs making noise,
-
0:29 - 0:32and as we sat there, over the mountains coming in
-
0:32 - 0:35from the north were these Steven Spielbergian clouds
-
0:35 - 0:36rolling toward us,
-
0:36 - 0:39and as the clouds got about halfway over the valley,
-
0:39 - 0:43so help me God, every single animal in that place
-
0:43 - 0:46stopped making noise at the same time.
-
0:46 - 0:51(Whoosh) This electric hush, as if they could sense what was about to happen.
-
0:51 - 0:53And then the clouds came over us, and then,
-
0:53 - 0:57boom! This massive thunderclap, and sheets of rain.
-
0:57 - 1:00It was just extraordinary, and when I came back home
-
1:00 - 1:03I found a poem by the Mexican poet Octavio Paz,
-
1:03 - 1:06and decided to set it to music,
-
1:06 - 1:08a piece for choir called "Cloudburst,"
-
1:08 - 1:11which is the piece that we'll perform for you in just a moment.
-
1:11 - 1:16Now fast forward to just three years ago.
-
1:16 - 1:19(Music) And we released to YouTube this,
-
1:19 - 1:21the Virtual Choir Project,
-
1:21 - 1:25185 singers from 12 different countries.
-
1:25 - 1:28You can see my little video there conducting these people,
-
1:28 - 1:29alone in their dorm rooms
-
1:29 - 1:32or in their living rooms at home.
-
1:32 - 1:36Two years ago, on this very stage, we premiered
-
1:36 - 1:40Virtual Choir 2,
-
1:40 - 1:442,052 singers from 58 different countries,
-
1:44 - 1:47this time performing a piece that I had written called "Sleep."
-
1:47 - 1:53And then just last spring we released Virtual Choir 3,
-
1:53 - 1:55"Water Night," another piece that I had written,
-
1:55 - 2:02this time nearly 4,000 singers from 73 different countries.
-
2:02 - 2:07(Music)
-
2:07 - 2:10And when I was speaking to Chris about the future
-
2:10 - 2:12of Virtual Choir and where we might be able to take this,
-
2:12 - 2:17he challenged me to push the technology as far as we possibly could.
-
2:17 - 2:19Could we do this all in real time?
-
2:19 - 2:22Could we have people singing together in real time?
-
2:22 - 2:24And with the help of Skype,
-
2:24 - 2:26that is what we are going to attempt today.
-
2:26 - 2:28Now, we'll perform "Cloudburst" for you.
-
2:28 - 2:31The first half will be performed by the live singers here on stage.
-
2:31 - 2:34I'm joined by singers from Cal State Long Beach,
-
2:34 - 2:37Cal State Fullerton and Riverside Community College,
-
2:37 - 2:41some of the best amateur choirs in the country, and —
-
2:41 - 2:48(Applause) --
-
2:48 - 2:50and in the second half of the piece,
-
2:50 - 2:53the virtual choir will join us, 30 different singers
-
2:53 - 2:55from 30 different countries.
-
2:55 - 2:57Now, we've pushed the technology as far as it can go,
-
2:57 - 3:00but there's still less than a second of latency,
-
3:00 - 3:02but in musical terms, that's a lifetime.
-
3:02 - 3:04We deal in milliseconds.
-
3:04 - 3:06So what I've done is, I've adapted "Cloudburst"
-
3:06 - 3:09so that it embraces the latency
-
3:09 - 3:11and the performers sing into the latency
-
3:11 - 3:14instead of trying to be exactly together.
-
3:14 - 3:17So with deep humility, and for your approval,
-
3:17 - 3:19we present "Cloudburst."
-
3:19 - 3:24(Applause)
-
3:24 - 3:28(Piano)
-
3:30 - 3:35[The rain ...]
-
3:41 - 3:45[Eyes of shadow-water]
-
3:46 - 3:50[eyes of well-water]
-
4:05 - 4:11[eyes of dream-water.]
-
4:15 - 4:21[Blue suns, green whirlwinds,]
-
4:34 - 4:40[birdbeaks of light pecking open]
-
4:42 - 4:45[pomegranate stars.]
-
4:52 - 4:58[But tell me, burnt earth, is there no water?]
-
5:10 - 5:15[Only blood, only dust,]
-
5:18 - 5:23[only naked footsteps on the thorns?]
-
5:35 - 5:39[The rain awakens...]
-
5:52 - 5:56[We must sleep with open eyes,]
-
5:56 - 6:00[we must dream with our hands,]
-
6:08 - 6:12[we must dream the dreams of a river seeking its course,]
-
6:13 - 6:17[of the sun dreaming its worlds.]
-
6:28 - 6:34[We must dream aloud,]
-
6:49 - 6:56[we must sing till the song puts forth roots,]
-
7:16 - 7:20[trunk, branches, birds, stars.]
-
7:45 - 7:50[We must find the lost word,]
-
8:00 - 8:03[and remember what the blood,]
-
8:08 - 8:13[the tides, the earth, and the body say,]
-
8:35 - 8:42[and return to the point of departure...]
-
8:53 - 9:02(Music)
-
11:23 - 11:37(Applause)
-
11:37 - 11:39["Cloudburst" Octavio Paz]
[translation by Lysander Kemp, adapted by Eric Whitacre] -
11:39 - 11:47Eric Whitacre: Beth. Annabelle, where are you? Jacob.
-
11:47 - 11:51(Applause)
-
12:09 - 12:13Thank you.

- Eric Whitacre
- Description:
-
Composer and conductor Eric Whitacre has inspired millions by bringing together "virtual choirs," singers from many countries spliced together on video. Now, for the first time ever, he creates the experience in real time, as 32 singers from around the world Skype in to join an onstage choir (assembled from three local colleges) for an epic performance of Whitacre's "Cloudburst," based on a poem by Octavio Paz.
