The Last Closet | Moira Greyland Peat

  • Not Synced
Those of you who follow us on facebook
  • Not Synced
    may wonder why we have
  • Not Synced
    things like this on facebook
  • Not Synced
And I do hope everyone is following us
  • Not Synced
but if you follow us on facebook
  • Not Synced
you know that we have a laugh
  • Not Synced
    in the afternoon everyday
  • Not Synced
    Can you all see that?
  • Not Synced
So, you know, we have things
  • Not Synced
like this, or, things like this one
  • Not Synced
This one was just up earlier this week
  • Not Synced
It's a scientist tip on how you tell an
  • Not Synced
    alligator from a crocodile
  • Not Synced
by whether the animal will see you later
  • Not Synced
or in a while. That's how you can tell
  • Not Synced
There's another way you can tell
  • Not Synced
    the difference between them
  • Not Synced
and that is if the animal is singing
  • Not Synced
and dancing and playing a musical
  • Not Synced
    instrument, it's certainly an alligator
  • Not Synced
    Crocodiles would never do anything
  • Not Synced
like that, so why do we do this?
  • Not Synced
Why are we 'yucking' it up all the time
  • Not Synced
Well, the fact is that the topics we
  • Not Synced
deal with on a regular basis are very grim
  • Not Synced
We deal with a lot of dark stuff
  • Not Synced
As you just saw, our previous speaker,
  • Not Synced
    practically in tears,
  • Not Synced
And he's not the only one that's going
  • Not Synced
    through this type of stuff.
  • Not Synced
And one of the least fun things that
  • Not Synced
we deal with now, is child abuse.
  • Not Synced
These are not fun things to deal with.
  • Not Synced
So we laugh, we try to yuck it up and have
  • Not Synced
a good time, because if we don't,
  • Not Synced
we give up. We gotta be in it for the
  • Not Synced
long haul, which means you gotta be
  • Not Synced
able to, you know have some fun once
  • Not Synced
in a while. So that's why we have
  • Not Synced
    stupid alligators and chick magnets
  • Not Synced
and things like that on our website
  • Not Synced
    every afternoon.
  • Not Synced
    So, I mentioned this pamphlet,
  • Not Synced
    "Do you know a survivor
  • Not Synced
    of the Sexual Revolution?"
  • Not Synced
If you open that up and study it,
  • Not Synced
    you will not see survivors
  • Not Synced
    of sexual abuse on there.
  • Not Synced
And the reason they're not on there
  • Not Synced
is because when I was working this out on
  • Not Synced
2013, I said to myself, "Well you know
  • Not Synced
    there's always been sexual abuse,
  • Not Synced
it isn't really fair to attribute that to
  • Not Synced
the sexual revolution. And besides look at
  • Not Synced
all these other stuff we have to work on.
  • Not Synced
Isn't this enough for one organization?
  • Not Synced
And besides secretly, I didn't want to
  • Not Synced
deal with it because it's not...
  • Not Synced
It's awful. No one really wants to deal
  • Not Synced
with it, but then last year
  • Not Synced
these issues started coming up, with the
  • Not Synced
    sexual harassment issues with
  • Not Synced
Harvey Weinstein, and all of these things
  • Not Synced
And you could kind of see that the girls
  • Not Synced
were trying to solve the #metoo movement
  • Not Synced
but they weren't really going to get it
  • Not Synced
done because they were kind of hanging
  • Not Synced
    on to the sexual revolution.
  • Not Synced
They were hanging onto things they
  • Not Synced
    shouldn't be hanging on to.
  • Not Synced
And, so I thought "You know, maybe we need
  • Not Synced
to be talking about this" And then
  • Not Synced
the whole thing, clergy sexual abuse
  • Not Synced
within the catholic church, and then I
  • Not Synced
    just became really convinced
  • Not Synced
"yeah, we gotta deal with it"
  • Not Synced
First off, nobody else will deal with
  • Not Synced
the broad spectrum of the sexual
  • Not Synced
revolution like we will, so therefore
  • Not Synced
we're the only guys in the field.
  • Not Synced
And also the sexual revolution is deeply
  • Not Synced
    implicated in this whole thing.
  • Not Synced
For this reason. The sexual revolution is
  • Not Synced
a set of ideas, and those ideas
  • Not Synced
    empower predators. They encourage
  • Not Synced
predators. The core idea of the
  • Not Synced
sexual revolution is that everybody is
  • Not Synced
entitled to sex! Everybody is entitled to
  • Not Synced
    guilt-free, child-free, problem-free, sex.
  • Not Synced
And anybody who says otherwise is
  • Not Synced
violating your human rights, for crying
  • Not Synced
    out loud. Who really thinks
  • Not Synced
you're entitled to sex. I mean come on,
  • Not Synced
that's the view of a rapist. That's not
  • Not Synced
real to think you're entitled to sex.
  • Not Synced
So that one idea, has many tentacles
  • Not Synced
and is a very poisonous idea. And at the
  • Not Synced
same time, these ideas also undermine the
  • Not Synced
    victims. They disarm the victims.
  • Not Synced
And so the sexual revolution is profoundly
  • Not Synced
implicated in the whole thing. And so,
  • Not Synced
that's what motivated me to reach out
  • Not Synced
to our next speaker, Moira Greyland Peat,
  • Not Synced
whom we're going to honor as
  • Not Synced
the public witness of the year.
  • Not Synced
I met Moira at an event sponsored by
  • Not Synced
in texas, and I heard her story of growing
  • Not Synced
up with openly, actively, gay, and
  • Not Synced
lesbian parents. She's the author of the
  • Not Synced
best selling book, "The Last Closet", and
  • Not Synced
she's the daughter of famous gay
  • Not Synced
    authors, Marion Zimmer Bradley, and
  • Not Synced
Walter Breen. And this is a photo of Moira
  • Not Synced
there in the center with her mother
  • Not Synced
and her brother. Her mother was the
  • Not Synced
author of this series of books,
  • Not Synced
"The Mists of Avalon". She was married to
  • Not Synced
Walter Breen, who was also a famous author
  • Not Synced
Moira's mother had a long time lesbian
  • Not Synced
lover, and Walter Breen lived an active
  • Not Synced
homosexual life and was himself, an
  • Not Synced
unrepentant child molester. Both of her
  • Not Synced
parents sexual abused Moira and her
  • Not Synced
brother, for years. And since they were
  • Not Synced
famous authors, and icons really, in the
  • Not Synced
    science fiction community, people didn't
  • Not Synced
    really do much about it.
  • Not Synced
Her father enjoyed being in hot tubs
  • Not Synced
    with children. Sometimes without any
  • Not Synced
    clothes on, he would encourage
  • Not Synced
kids to get into the hot tub with him
  • Not Synced
without any clothes on. And numerous
  • Not Synced
adults saw or could have seen that the
  • Not Synced
    kids were being groomed.
  • Not Synced
and really, for all practical purposes
  • Not Synced
    nobody did anything about it.
  • Not Synced
As a teenager, Moira called the police
  • Not Synced
on her father, when she caught him
  • Not Synced
in the act of molesting an 11 year old boy
  • Not Synced
Her father was arrested, put in prison,
  • Not Synced
where he died, and her family considered
  • Not Synced
this an act of betrayal. Rather than
  • Not Synced
denying what her father did, her mother
  • Not Synced
said, "well children have the right to
  • Not Synced
make up their own lines about having sex
  • Not Synced
with adults. Her father had made his views
  • Not Synced
clear in this book called, "Greek Love",
  • Not Synced
and a journal called, "The Journal of
  • Not Synced
    Greek Love", which she edited.
  • Not Synced
In 2014, Moira revealed all these things
  • Not Synced
about her parents. People were shocked,
  • Not Synced
and she was shocked, to find how many
  • Not Synced
people who were also children of gays,
  • Not Synced
reached out to her with similar stories.
  • Not Synced
    So the last closet..... book
  • Not Synced
it not simply a taill of victimization
  • Not Synced
its also a tail that explain how her parent
  • Not Synced
    became who they became
  • Not Synced
but more regad your self as lucky of one way
  • Not Synced

  • Not Synced
as a result she is a successful professional
