The benefits of good posture - Murat Dalkilinç
-
0:08 - 0:11Has anyone ever told you,
"Stand up straight!" -
0:11 - 0:15or scolded you for slouching
at a family dinner? -
0:15 - 0:19Comments like that might be annoying,
but they're not wrong. -
0:19 - 0:23Your posture, the way you hold your body
when you're sitting or standing, -
0:23 - 0:26is the foundation for every movement
your body makes, -
0:26 - 0:31and can determine how well your body
adapts to the stresses on it. -
0:31 - 0:34These stresses can be things
like carrying weight, -
0:34 - 0:36or sitting in an awkward position.
-
0:36 - 0:41And the big one we all experience
all day every day: gravity. -
0:41 - 0:43If your posture isn't optimal,
-
0:43 - 0:47your muscles have to work harder
to keep you upright and balanced. -
0:47 - 0:50Some muscles will become tight
and inflexbile. -
0:50 - 0:52Others will be inhibited.
-
0:52 - 0:54Over time, these dysfunctional adaptations
-
0:54 - 0:59impair your body's ability
to deal with the forces on it. -
0:59 - 1:03Poor posture inflicts extra wear and tear
on your joints and ligaments, -
1:03 - 1:05increases the likelihood of accidents,
-
1:05 - 1:10and makes some organs,
like your lungs, less efficient. -
1:10 - 1:12Researchers have linked
poor posture to scoliosis, -
1:12 - 1:14tension headaches,
-
1:14 - 1:15and back pain,
-
1:15 - 1:19though it isn't the exclusive
cause of any of them. -
1:19 - 1:22Posture can even influence
your emotional state -
1:22 - 1:24and your sensitivity to pain.
-
1:24 - 1:28So there are a lot of reasons
to aim for good posture. -
1:28 - 1:30But it's getting harder these days.
-
1:30 - 1:34Sitting in an awkward position
for a long time can promote poor posture, -
1:34 - 1:37and so can using computers
or mobile devices, -
1:37 - 1:39which encourage you to look downward.
-
1:39 - 1:44Many studies suggest that, on average,
posture is getting worse. -
1:44 - 1:46So what does good posture look like?
-
1:46 - 1:49When you look at the spine
from the front or the back, -
1:49 - 1:53all 33 vertebrae should appear stacked
in a straight line. -
1:53 - 1:56From the side, the spine
should have three curves: -
1:56 - 2:01one at your neck, one at your shoulders,
and one at the small of your back. -
2:01 - 2:03You aren't born with this s-shaped spine.
-
2:03 - 2:07Babies' spines just have one curve like a "c."
-
2:07 - 2:10The other curves usually develop
by 12-18 months -
2:10 - 2:13as the muscles strengthen.
-
2:13 - 2:16These curves help us stay upright
and absorb some of the stress -
2:16 - 2:19from activities like walking and jumping.
-
2:19 - 2:21If they are aligned properly,
-
2:21 - 2:22when you're standing up,
-
2:22 - 2:24you should be able to draw a straight line
-
2:24 - 2:26from a point just in front
of your shoulders, -
2:26 - 2:28to behind your hip,
-
2:28 - 2:29to the front of your knee,
-
2:29 - 2:32to a few inches in front of your ankle.
-
2:32 - 2:36This keeps your center of gravity
directly over your base of support, -
2:36 - 2:38which allows you to move efficiently
-
2:38 - 2:41with the least amount of fatigue
and muscle strain. -
2:41 - 2:44If you're sitting,
your neck should be vertical, -
2:44 - 2:45not tilted forward.
-
2:45 - 2:49Your shoulders should be relaxed
with your arms close to your trunk. -
2:49 - 2:54Your knees should be at a right angle
with your feet flat on the floor. -
2:54 - 2:56But what if your posture isn't that great?
-
2:56 - 2:59Try redesigning your environment.
-
2:59 - 3:04Adjust your screen so it's at
or slightly below eyelevel. -
3:04 - 3:06Make sure all parts of your body,
-
3:06 - 3:09like your elbows and wrists,
are supported, -
3:09 - 3:12using ergonomic aids if you need to.
-
3:12 - 3:14Try sleeping on your side
with your neck supported -
3:14 - 3:17and with a pillow between your legs.
-
3:17 - 3:20Wear shoes with low heels
and good arch support, -
3:20 - 3:22and use a headset for phone calls.
-
3:22 - 3:26It's also not enough
to just have good posture. -
3:26 - 3:30Keeping your muscles and joints moving
is extremely important. -
3:30 - 3:34In fact, being stationary for long periods
with good posture -
3:34 - 3:39can be worse than regular movement
with bad posture. -
3:39 - 3:41When you do move, move smartly.
-
3:41 - 3:44Keep anything you're carrying
close to your body. -
3:44 - 3:49Backpacks should be in contact
with your back carried symetrically. -
3:49 - 3:52If you sit a lot, get up and move around
on occassion, -
3:52 - 3:55and be sure to exercise.
-
3:55 - 3:58Using your muscles will keep them
strong enough to support you effectively, -
3:58 - 4:04on top of all the other benefits
to your joints, bones, brain and heart. -
4:04 - 4:07And if you're really worried,
check with a physical therapist, -
4:07 - 4:11because yes,
you really should stand up straight.
