Power Chords #1of2 (Guitar Lesson CH-004) How to play
-
0:14 - 0:15Hello my friends.
-
0:15 - 0:20Here we are, this lesson is the
Part 1 of learning about Power Chords. -
0:20 - 0:22So, what are Power Chords, first of all?
-
0:22 - 0:26So, a Power Chord is a kind of
a Rock Guitar chord shape that you use. -
0:26 - 0:29It's, the actual shape stays the same.
-
0:29 - 0:31So there are two things
that we need to learn. -
0:31 - 0:32First Of all, how to play the shape.
-
0:32 - 0:34And secondly, how to move it around.
-
0:34 - 0:37So that we can change that
one shape into lots of different chords. -
0:37 - 0:38So what they sound like?
-
0:38 - 0:42If you're one of, most of
you rock guys won't be playing Telecasters, -
0:42 - 0:45but this is a fairly meaty
sounding Tele as far as they go. -
0:45 - 0:47it's this kind of
-
0:47 - 0:53. . .
-
0:53 - 0:55That kind of, quite a
big, kind of fat meaty, -
0:55 - 0:58rock sound, is what
we're kinda going for here. -
0:58 - 1:01So really what it is is just
three notes that you play each time, -
1:01 - 1:03and these notes would be
what's called the Root note, -
1:03 - 1:08the 5th of the chord,
and then the octave. -
1:08 - 1:11You're actually only playing
three notes every time. -
1:11 - 1:17Now some Power Chords
are only played with two fingers, -
1:17 - 1:19but I'll explain that a little bit later on.
-
1:19 - 1:24So, the first things that you need
to know about is this Root note idea. -
1:24 - 1:28So I really advise that you
watch this video through my webpage. -
1:28 - 1:32So if you're not on my
webpage now, if you're just at YouTube, -
1:32 - 1:34you'll find it a lot easier
if you go to the website, -
1:34 - 1:37because then you'll get to see, like
the little neck diagram of the chords, -
1:37 - 1:38and the tabs,
and all that sort of stuff. -
1:38 - 1:42So, I'd advise you,
you know, if you're not there now, -
1:42 - 1:44maybe nip off to the website,
find the same lesson. -
1:44 - 1:47So, what we've got to check out
is this Root note idea. -
1:47 - 1:49So if you have a
look at the little diagram there -
1:49 - 1:51you'll see of the three notes
that make the Power Chord, -
1:51 - 1:55the lowest note, on the 6th string,
is called the Root note. -
1:55 - 1:59And the note that we place that Root note on
becomes the name of the chord. -
1:59 - 2:04So, if I put this Root note
of this next Power Chord here on the 3rd fret, -
2:04 - 2:08the 3rd fret, on the 6th string,
the thickest string, is the note G. -
2:08 - 2:13So if I play the Power Chord shape there
at the 3rd fret, -
2:13 - 2:15it becomes a G Power Chord.
-
2:15 - 2:17Sometimes Power Chords
are referred to as 5, -
2:17 - 2:19so this'd be written G5.
-
2:19 - 2:21Sometimes it's just written G
and you play a Power Chord. -
2:21 - 2:24You know, different people,
different ways of writing it down. -
2:24 - 2:26So now we're in G.
-
2:26 - 2:28Now if we move
that whole shape up again, -
2:28 - 2:32and put it on the 5th fret, so our 1st finger
was in the 5th fret of the 6th string, -
2:32 - 2:37that's the note A, so that would make it
an A Power Chord, or an A5. -
2:37 - 2:41And if we move it up to the 7th fret,
it would be a B. -
2:41 - 2:45Up to the 8th fret, it'd be a C.
-
2:45 - 2:48Now, of course it's also useful
if you understand your sharps and flats. -
2:48 - 2:51Knowing that flat always goes down,
-
2:51 - 2:54like a flat tyre makes the car go down,
or the tyre go down. -
2:54 - 2:58So if we were on A, which is the 5th fret,
and then we want Ab, -
2:58 - 3:04we'd go, 5th fret, we'd go flat,
like lower, down to the 4th fret, -
3:04 - 3:07and we'd have Ab Power Chord.
-
3:07 - 3:10Same with sharp, if you sit
on something sharp you'd jump up. -
3:10 - 3:12So sharps make the sound go up.
-
3:12 - 3:16So if we had F, which is
at the first fret, and we wanted F#, -
3:16 - 3:22we would go up one fret, from F to F#,
and that would be at the 2nd fret. -
3:22 - 3:25So, the next thing that you need to know,
you need to get a bit -
3:25 - 3:28of a close up, and make sure
that you know how to place your fingers. -
3:28 - 3:29So let's go to that now.
-
3:29 - 3:33OK so here we are at the,
this is the 3rd fret just here. -
3:33 - 3:36What I'm gonna do is I'm putting
my 1st finger down in the 3rd fret. -
3:36 - 3:39Making sure of course it's
nice and close to the fret. -
3:39 - 3:41Because that's the good place
to position your finger. -
3:41 - 3:44Then you're gonna reach out
with your 3rd finger, -
3:44 - 3:45and put that two frets higher.
-
3:45 - 3:48So it's gonna be
in the 5th fret of the 5th string, -
3:48 - 3:51and then little finger will
sneak in underneath that one. -
3:51 - 3:54So getting both of them
as close to the fret as you possibly can. -
3:54 - 3:57Remember to try and kinda keep these two
locked together a bit, -
3:57 - 3:59so they're kinda pressing together.
-
3:59 - 4:02That helps you keep the shape
when you start moving it around a lot. -
4:02 - 4:06So that'll be your G5 Power Chord.
-
4:06 - 4:10Now the thing here
that's really important to realize is -
4:10 - 4:14that the rest of the strings,
the other three strings, are not sounding. -
4:14 - 4:16That's really important
because if you're like, -
4:16 - 4:20trying to just play those three notes,
and you've left the other ones open, -
4:20 - 4:23you're gonna get
those open strings ringing out, -
4:23 - 4:26and especially with a lot of distortion,
it'll sound really horrible. -
4:26 - 4:30I want you to look here
at my 1st finger, now it's not pressing it down -
4:30 - 4:33like it's a barre chord,
it's just touching the strings, -
4:33 - 4:36down here, so the 1st finger
is pressing down only that note. -
4:36 - 4:39And all of the rest of it's,
it's kind of a bit rounder than normal, -
4:39 - 4:44and it's actually
just keeping those strings completely muted. -
4:44 - 4:48So that there's no sound
coming out of those strings at all. -
4:48 - 4:52Try and make sure that that finger there
is nice and muting the strings. -
4:52 - 4:56So if I play with just,
I'll turn the distortion back a little bit, -
4:56 - 4:58so you can hear,
so a G Power Chord, which is here, -
4:58 - 5:01at the 3rd fret,
should sound like (plays) -
5:01 - 5:05but then ,
so there's three notes dead. -
5:05 - 5:10And the top three completely muted.
-
5:10 - 5:12It's really important.
(plays) -
5:12 - 5:17Otherwise the shape is pretty cool.
-
5:17 - 5:21It's OK to have that finger
extended off the fretboard. -
5:21 - 5:26The 2nd finger kind of sits up like that.
-
5:26 - 5:28And sometimes it sits down like that,
it doesn't really matter. -
5:28 - 5:31The important thing is
that the 1st finger is doing those mutes. -
5:31 - 5:35So you've got the mutes happening
and you've got the shape happening. -
5:35 - 5:37The next thing that you need to do
is start to practice -
5:37 - 5:40a little bit just moving
that shape around a little bit. -
5:40 - 5:43Now there's a really common kind of riff
that you can use for this. -
5:43 - 5:48Which is the 'Smells Like Teen Spirit'
kind of chord progression. -
5:48 - 5:50Now I'm gonna show, this isn't
the way to play it off the record. -
5:50 - 5:53This is just an exercise
for you to get used to it. -
5:53 - 5:55Now, to get used to the Power Chords
and keep them moving around. -
5:55 - 5:57Now, remembering what I said
about how important it is -
5:57 - 6:00to keep those thin strings muted,
-
6:00 - 6:02I mean
if you wanted to be really careful -
6:02 - 6:04you could make sure
that you only pick those three strings, -
6:04 - 6:07the thickest three strings
that the fingers are on for the Power Chord. -
6:07 - 6:09But let's face it, if you're doing a gig,
-
6:09 - 6:12especially playing like a rock gig
like Foo Fighters or Nirvana, -
6:12 - 6:13and whatever.
-
6:13 - 6:15You don't want
to be sitting there staring at your guitar, -
6:15 - 6:17and checking out the picks, there's gonna be like
hot chicks to look at, -
6:17 - 6:20and stuff, you know it's not,
you don't wanna be staring like this. -
6:20 - 6:22So it's really important
that you get to the point, -
6:22 - 6:24so you can really,
like this hand, your strumming hand, -
6:24 - 6:28can, bash all of the notes
and it doesn't matter, -
6:28 - 6:31and it just, it keeps the Power Chord
nice and clean. -
6:31 - 6:34So if we use our
'Smells Like Teen Spirit' as an example, -
6:34 - 6:36this has only got four chords,
-
6:36 - 6:38and this isn't the way
that they play it on the record. -
6:38 - 6:41This is just an example for you
to get your chords moving around. -
6:41 - 6:43I will be doing a lesson
on this song really soon. -
6:43 - 6:45Cause it's a rocking song,
and it kicks ass for learning Power Chords. -
6:45 - 6:46But.
-
6:46 - 6:55It's got the, the basic chord progression
is just going (plays) F#, B to A to D. -
6:55 - 6:58Now, I'm gonna call out
what frets they are on, -
6:58 - 7:01but, I want you to check out
on my website, -
7:01 - 7:04there's a little chart that shows you
where the different Root notes are. -
7:04 - 7:06Cause all your doing is
moving that one Power Chord shape, -
7:06 - 7:08up and down, and changing the Root note,
-
7:08 - 7:10which is the lowest note of the chord
in this case. -
7:10 - 7:13So, F# is at the 2nd fret.
-
7:13 - 7:16B is at the 7th fret.
-
7:16 - 7:18A is at the 5th fret.
-
7:18 - 7:21And D is right up at the 10th fret.
-
7:21 - 7:23Now even if you just do
two strums on each one, -
7:23 - 7:27then it kind of sounds pretty meaty
if you're playing the chord nice, -
7:27 - 7:30making sure that you get
those, muting those extra strings. -
7:30 - 7:31That's the most important bit there.
-
7:31 - 7:34So if you've checked that out, this
out as a kind of a sequence, -
7:34 - 7:37just to get used to your Power Chord,
and get used to your mute, -
7:37 - 7:40and I'll show you a better way to play it
in the Power Chords Pt. 2. -
7:40 - 7:42but try and get
these ones down first. -
7:42 - 7:45So, just to show you here again,
so this is going from, -
7:45 - 7:55F# - B -A - D.
(plays) -
7:55 - 8:01. . .
-
8:01 - 8:04There you could add in,
if your competent at rhythm guitar, -
8:04 - 8:06and you want to try
and do the rhythm for it -
8:06 - 8:17. . .
-
8:17 - 8:19That was a funny
wobbly ending from me, but anyway. -
8:19 - 8:22So, that's just an execise for you.
-
8:22 - 8:26There's loads and loads of other songs
that you could use to practice this. -
8:26 - 8:31A good one that springs to mind is
All The Small Things by Blink 182. -
8:31 - 8:37That's only using the
Power Chords of C, G and F. -
8:37 - 8:41Which is 8th fret, 3rd fret and 1st fret.
-
8:41 - 8:44Again, they don't play it
exactly like that, -
8:44 - 8:46but that's not a bad way
of practicing it. -
8:46 - 8:53Starting with a C - G - F - G.
-
8:53 - 8:57(plays) back to the C and down to F
-
8:57 - 9:00. . .
-
9:00 - 9:04It's a really straight forward little riff
and it only uses those 3 chords. -
9:04 - 9:06Maybe you should transcribe it yourself.
-
9:06 - 9:07It might not be a bad plan.
-
9:07 - 9:09Anyway, so,
have a muck around with those, -
9:09 - 9:11make sure that you
get the technique right. -
9:11 - 9:15Don't forget to check out
where the Root notes are on my website. -
9:15 - 9:19And I'll see in a little
bit for Power Chords Pt. 2. -
9:19 - 9:21See you dudes.
-
9:21 - 9:25(Tassie Devil singing.)
