WATCH: Teen explains why he defied mother's anti-vaccination ideas

  • Not Synced
    Thank you, Chairman Alexander,
    senator Murray,
  • Not Synced
    and distinguished committee members
  • Not Synced
for the opportunity to speak today.
  • Not Synced
    Good morning, everyone.
  • Not Synced
    As I stated, my name
    is Ethan Lindenberger,
  • Not Synced
and I'm a senior in Norwalk High School,
  • Not Synced
and my mother is an anti-vax advocate
  • Not Synced
    who believes vaccines
    cause autism, brain damage,
  • Not Synced
and do not benefit the health
    and safety of society
  • Not Synced
    despite the fact such opinions
    have been debunked numerous times
  • Not Synced
    by the scientific community.
  • Not Synced
    I went my entire life
    without numerous vaccines
  • Not Synced
    against diseases such as measles,
    chicken pox, or even polio.
  • Not Synced
    However, in December of 2018,
  • Not Synced
    I began catching up
    on my missed immunizations
  • Not Synced
    despite my mother's disapproval,
  • Not Synced
    eventually leading to a story
and being able to speak here today,
  • Not Synced
and I'm very happy for that.
  • Not Synced
    So, thank you.
  • Not Synced
Now, to understand why I've come here
and what I reallly want to talk about,
  • Not Synced
I have to share some details
about my home life, my upbring.
  • Not Synced
    I grew up understanding
    my mother's beliefs
  • Not Synced
    that vaccines are dangerous,
  • Not Synced
    as she would speak openly
    about these views.
  • Not Synced
    Both online and in-person,
  • Not Synced
    she would voice her concerns
  • Not Synced
    and these beliefs were met
    with strong criticism.
  • Not Synced
Over the course of my life,
    seeds of doubts were planted,
  • Not Synced
    and questions arose
  • Not Synced
    because of the backslash
    my mother would receive.
  • Not Synced
    But overtime that didn't really
    lead anywhere.
  • Not Synced
    Now, it's important to understand
  • Not Synced
that as I approached high school
and began to critically think for myself,
  • Not Synced
    I saw that the information
    in defense of vaccines
  • Not Synced
    outweighed the concerns heavily.
  • Not Synced
I began leading debate clubs in my school
and pursuing truth above all else,
  • Not Synced
    and I realized one certain
    quality in debates
  • Not Synced
    and in conversations in general
  • Not Synced
    when it comes to the
    controversial discussions
  • Not Synced
    which is that there seems
to always be two sides to a discussion.
  • Not Synced
    There always seems to be
    a counterclaim or rebuttal
  • Not Synced
    and always something
to strike back with in terms of debate.
  • Not Synced
This may seem true in all essences
but it's not true for the vaccine debate.
  • Not Synced
    And I approach my mother
with this concern, that she was incorrect.
  • Not Synced
I approached my mother numerous times,
  • Not Synced
trying to explain that vaccines are safe,
    and i should be vaccinated.
  • Not Synced
Approaching her with articles from the CDC
  • Not Synced
    exquisitely claiming
  • Not Synced
that ideas that vaccines cause autism
    and extremely dangerous consequences
  • Not Synced
    were incorrect.
  • Not Synced
And once again I approached my mother
    with information from the CDC
  • Not Synced
    that claims that vaccines
    do not cause autism,
  • Not Synced
    and she responded that
that's what they want you to think.
  • Not Synced
    Skepticism and worry were taking
the forefront in terms of information.
  • Not Synced
    Now, conversations like these
    reaffirmed the evidence
  • Not Synced
    that the defense of vaccines
was at least, and in a bottle level,
  • Not Synced
much greater than the deeply rooted
    misinformation my mother interacted with,
  • Not Synced
and that's what i want to focus on today.
  • Not Synced
    To combat preventable disease outbreaks,
  • Not Synced
    information is, in my mind,
    the forefront of this matter.
  • Not Synced
My mother would turn to anti-vaccine
groups online and in social media
  • Not Synced
looking for her evidence and defense
  • Not Synced
    rather than health officials
    and credible sources.
  • Not Synced
This may seem to be anomalous
  • Not Synced
    because of the dangerous
    of non vaccination purposes.
  • Not Synced
But this is not the case.
  • Not Synced
My mother came in the sense
  • Not Synced
    of loving her children
    and being concerned.
  • Not Synced
    This misinformation spreads,
  • Not Synced
and this is not necessarily justifiable.
  • Not Synced
    Right here with this knowledge
  • Not Synced
would be that It was with respect and love
that i disagreed with my mother.
  • Not Synced
And with the information she provided,
  • Not Synced
I continue to try and explain
    that it was misinformed.
  • Not Synced
    Ideas, again, that vaccines
    cause autism, brain damage,
  • Not Synced
and also that the measles outbreak
  • Not Synced
is of no concern to society
    and to America.
  • Not Synced
    were ideas that were pushed
by the sources she would go to.
  • Not Synced
    And for certain individuals
    and organizations
  • Not Synced
    that spread this misinformation
  • Not Synced
they instill fear into the public
    for their own gain selfishly
  • Not Synced
    and do so, knowing
    the information is incorrect.
  • Not Synced
For my mother, her love affection and care
  • Not Synced
was used to push the agenda
    to create a false stress.
  • Not Synced
    And the sources that spread
    this misinformation
  • Not Synced
    should be the primary concern
    of the American people.
  • Not Synced
All the changes are already placed,
and more things can be done.
  • Not Synced
    Almost 80% of the people
  • Not Synced
    turn to the internet
    for health related questions.
  • Not Synced
    I further explained more statistics
    in my written testimony.
  • Not Synced
Now, in terms of what I would like
    to walk away with today
  • Not Synced
    and to finalize with,
  • Not Synced
    my mother would turn
    to illegitimate sources
  • Not Synced
    that did not have peer-reviewed
    evidence or information,
  • Not Synced
    I could clearly saw
  • Not Synced
    that the claims for myself
    were not accurate
  • Not Synced
    and because of that,
  • Not Synced
    and because of my health
    care professionals,
  • Not Synced
I was able to speak with
    an information provided to me,
  • Not Synced
I was able to make clear, concise,
    and scientific decision.
  • Not Synced
    Approaching this issue
    with the concern of education
  • Not Synced
    and addressing misinformation properly
  • Not Synced
can cause change, as it did for me.
  • Not Synced
Now, although the debate around vaccines
  • Not Synced
is not necessarily centered on information
and concern for health and safety,
  • Not Synced
this is why education is important
  • Not Synced
and why misinformation is so dangerous.
