Hi PaulTalkers and other viewers, I’m Paul
and I want you to register to vote!
-
[music]
-
YouTube has found that on average it takes
one minute, thirty-four seconds to register
-
to vote.
-
That’s what this counter is counting down.
-
To get started, just search Google for “register
to vote” or click on this info card in the
-
corner!
-
You can do that in another window while I
talk to you here about Spoon Theory and how
-
it applies to voting.
-
Over a decade ago, Christine Miserandino was
trying to explain to a friend what it’s
-
like to live with a chronic illness (versus
not having to do that) and grabbed a bunch
-
of nearby spoons then asked her friend to
list all the things they do in a day.
-
For every “thing” (getting up, taking
a shower, having breakfast, getting dressed,
-
etc.) Christine [sound of clanging spoons]
*chuckle* set aside one of the spoons.
-
Before her friend finished listing all
the things, the spoons were gone and the theoretical
-
day wasn’t done.
-
That’s what it can be like when you have
a chronic illness, like lupus for her, or
-
depression for me.
-
(But if you don’t have a health issue limiting
them, you have a for-all-practical-purposes
-
unlimited amount of spoons.)
-
If you know someone who has a chronic illness,
that is why sometimes they just won’t be
-
up for “things”.
-
How does this apply to registering to vote?
-
Because everyone has different abilities and
spoons, I try not to say that anything is
-
easy, but the online process to register to
vote in the United States has probably never
-
been easier.
-
You don’t have to deal with a person.
-
You don’t have to articulate very many personal
things about yourself.
-
You don’t have to physically manipulate
much.
-
And on average it doesn’t take much time.
-
So even for Spoonies, it may be more doable
than you think to register to vote, so please
-
do!
-
And that’s time!
