Hi PaulTalkers and other viewers, I’m Paul and I want you to register to vote! [music] YouTube has found that on average it takes one minute, thirty-four seconds to register to vote. That’s what this counter is counting down. To get started, just search Google for “register to vote” or click on this info card in the corner! You can do that in another window while I talk to you here about Spoon Theory and how it applies to voting. Over a decade ago, Christine Miserandino was trying to explain to a friend what it’s like to live with a chronic illness (versus not having to do that) and grabbed a bunch of nearby spoons then asked her friend to list all the things they do in a day. For every “thing” (getting up, taking a shower, having breakfast, getting dressed, etc.) Christine [sound of clanging spoons] *chuckle* set aside one of the spoons. Before her friend finished listing all the things, the spoons were gone and the theoretical day wasn’t done. That’s what it can be like when you have a chronic illness, like lupus for her, or depression for me. (But if you don’t have a health issue limiting them, you have a for-all-practical-purposes unlimited amount of spoons.) If you know someone who has a chronic illness, that is why sometimes they just won’t be up for “things”. How does this apply to registering to vote? Because everyone has different abilities and spoons, I try not to say that anything is easy, but the online process to register to vote in the United States has probably never been easier. You don’t have to deal with a person. You don’t have to articulate very many personal things about yourself. You don’t have to physically manipulate much. And on average it doesn’t take much time. So even for Spoonies, it may be more doable than you think to register to vote, so please do! And that’s time!
