Three digit addition word problems

  • 0:00 - 0:01
    - [Instructor] We're told,
  • 0:01 - 0:06
    the table gives the amounts
    of materials Aya recycled.
  • 0:06 - 0:08
So we have the different materials here,
  • 0:08 - 0:09
and then it gives the various amounts.
  • 0:09 - 0:14
    How many kilograms of paper
    and aluminum did Aya recycle?
  • 0:14 - 0:17
So pause this video and see
if you can figure this out.
  • 0:17 - 0:21
    Okay, so we're thinking
    about paper and aluminum,
  • 0:21 - 0:24
so paper is right over here.
  • 0:24 - 0:28
She recycled 277 kilograms of paper.
  • 0:28 - 0:31
And aluminum is right over here.
  • 0:31 - 0:34
She recycled 134 kilograms of aluminum.
  • 0:34 - 0:36
    And so we want the
    combination, or the sum,
  • 0:36 - 0:40
of paper and aluminum, so it's going to be
  • 0:40 - 0:45
    277 kilograms plus 134 kilograms.
  • 0:47 - 0:51
So we really need to figure
out what 277 plus 134 is,
  • 0:51 - 0:52
and in multiple videos, we have talked
  • 0:52 - 0:55
    about how there's many different
    ways of approaching this.
  • 0:55 - 0:59
    We could say, well let's
    just break up the 134.
  • 0:59 - 1:02
We could start at, actually let
me do this on a number line.
  • 1:02 - 1:04
That sometimes is a fun thing to do.
  • 1:04 - 1:07
So if we were to just say,
    this is our number line,
  • 1:07 - 1:12
    and we're going to start
    at 277 right over there.
  • 1:13 - 1:17
    So first, we could add
    100, because we have 100
  • 1:17 - 1:18
right over there, so let's do that.
  • 1:18 - 1:23
If we add 100, so plus
100, where does it get us?
  • 1:23 - 1:28
Well if we add 100 here, we get to 377.
  • 1:28 - 1:32
    So 300, I'll just write, 77.
  • 1:32 - 1:36
And then we could add three 10s, or 30.
  • 1:36 - 1:39
So then we're going to add 30.
  • 1:39 - 1:44
    So let's add 30, so plus 30.
  • 1:44 - 1:46
    What does that get us?
  • 1:46 - 1:48
    So this is interesting.
  • 1:48 - 1:52
If you add 30 to 370,
  • 1:53 - 1:57
    you would get to 400,
  • 1:57 - 1:58
and then we have another seven there,
  • 1:58 - 2:02
so that gets us to 407.
  • 2:02 - 2:04
So then we get to 407.
  • 2:04 - 2:06
And once again, this is just one way
  • 2:06 - 2:07
to try to think about it.
  • 2:07 - 2:11
    And then, last but not
least, we could add the four.
  • 2:11 - 2:13
So then you say, we're there right now,
  • 2:13 - 2:17
and then we add plus four,
and seven plus four is 11,
  • 2:17 - 2:21
so 407 plus four is 411.
  • 2:21 - 2:25
So how many kilograms of paper
    and aluminum did Aya recycle?
  • 2:25 - 2:28
    Would be 411 kilograms.
  • 2:28 - 2:31
    Kilo, kilograms, and we're done.
