Renewable energy | Carolina Weltman Hutzler | TEDxKids@PortoSeguroSchool

  • 0:16 - 0:17
    Hello, my name is Carol
  • 0:17 - 0:21
and today I am here to give
    a presentation on renewable energy.
  • 0:21 - 0:24
    Before I start, I know
some of you may find it strange
  • 0:24 - 0:26
    having a 10-year-old girl
    giving you a class,
  • 0:26 - 0:28
but I want you to know
I am not giving a class,
  • 0:28 - 0:32
I am just talking to you.
  • 0:35 - 0:36
    Well, what is energy?
  • 0:36 - 0:41
    Energy is that which produces
    action and movement.
  • 0:42 - 0:44
I don't know if you've stopped to think
  • 0:44 - 0:47
how dependent we are on energy
in our daily lives, really for everything.
  • 0:47 - 0:50
    Going about by car.
  • 0:50 - 0:52
    Making engines run.
  • 0:52 - 0:55
    Having factories work.
  • 0:56 - 0:58
So, as you see, for everything.
  • 0:58 - 1:01
    To use the mobile,
    the computer, the internet.
  • 1:01 - 1:04
For really everything in our daily lives.
  • 1:04 - 1:09
I will now talk about renewable
    and non-renewable energy sources.
  • 1:09 - 1:11
    What are non-renewable energies?
  • 1:11 - 1:14
    They are those that become
    exhausted with usage,
  • 1:14 - 1:18
    and they cause big damage
    to the environment.
  • 1:18 - 1:21
    And now renewable energy.
  • 1:21 - 1:23
    Sources of renewable energy,
  • 1:23 - 1:26
    they are those that cannot
    be created or destroyed.
  • 1:26 - 1:28
They renew themselves in a natural way
  • 1:28 - 1:32
and cause less damage to the environment.
  • 1:32 - 1:37
This is an example of oil, the world's
    biggest primary energy source.
  • 1:37 - 1:40
    This is coal and slate.
  • 1:41 - 1:42
This is a nuclear power plant:
  • 1:42 - 1:47
    radioactive metals
produce heat by a nuclear reaction.
  • 1:47 - 1:53
This is an example of natural gas,
the gas used in household cooking.
  • 1:53 - 1:56
Now I will talk about renewable energies.
  • 1:57 - 1:59
This is an example of wind power:
  • 1:59 - 2:02
    here the turbine rotates,
    generating energy.
  • 2:02 - 2:04
This is an example of solar energy:
  • 2:04 - 2:08
    the sun strikes these panels,
    generating energy.
  • 2:08 - 2:11
    This is a hydroelectric turbine.
  • 2:11 - 2:12
    And this is ethanol.
  • 2:12 - 2:15
As I already said, you cannot
    create or destroy them,
  • 2:15 - 2:19
    they renew themselves
in a natural way as in this photo.
  • 2:20 - 2:25
Now it depends on you, I want you
to think of new ideas to save our planet.
  • 2:25 - 2:30
Let's save energy in our homes
and in all the places we go.
  • 2:30 - 2:31
    Thank you.
  • 2:31 - 2:33
    (Applause)
