Guitar Quick Tip #11: Practice Breaking Strings (Guitar Lesson QT-011)
-
0:05 - 0:06Hey! How ya doing?
-
0:06 - 0:08Justin here with another quick tip for you,
-
0:08 - 0:11and today it is practice breaking strings.
-
0:11 - 0:14Now, I don't mean actually to practice breaking your strings
-
0:14 - 0:15cuz that would be kinda crazy,
-
0:15 - 0:18but breaking strings is kind of inevitable.
-
0:18 - 0:21It's gonna happen if you're out playing gigs and stuff.
-
0:21 - 0:23Sooner or later you're gonna bust a string on stage, it happens.
-
0:23 - 0:28Even often times I've restrung a guitar just before a show,
-
0:28 - 0:29and I've still managed to snap a string.
-
0:29 - 0:32Perhaps I've been getting into it particularly hard one day and it,
-
0:32 - 0:34you know, one of the strings popped.
-
0:34 - 0:38So, what I would recommend is that you kind of get ready for the emergency,
-
0:38 - 0:43and practice it a bit beforehand so you're not into a complete panic when it happens to you on stage.
-
0:43 - 0:47So, the way I used to practice it was to imagine a string had broken.
-
0:47 - 0:51If you wanted to, you could actually take different strings off.
-
0:51 - 0:55That wouldn't be a bad plan cuz it does feel a little different when there's a string gone,
-
0:55 - 0:56actually taken off the guitar.
-
0:56 - 0:59It kinda feels weird, but you don't have to go that far.
-
0:59 - 1:02The thing that I'd recommend that you practice,
-
1:02 - 1:04it's kinda fun as well, it'll help you explore the instrument,
-
1:04 - 1:07is just to pretend a string is missing.
-
1:07 - 1:11So, put on a backing track for 12 bar blues and do a 12 bar blues solo,
-
1:11 - 1:14but don't touch the second string.
-
1:16 -It's really interesting what happens, cuz so many of our licks go over that second string,
-
Not SyncedRight?
-
Not SyncedThere's loads of them.
-
Not SyncedAll of your position changing stuff
-
Not SyncedLoads of things are involved around that
-
Not SyncedSo suddenly when you take it away,
-
Not Syncedor you can't use it,
-
Not Syncedall of, well most of your licks don't work.
-
Not SyncedSo you have to kind of find new licks,
-
Not Syncedand that can be kind of cool,
-
Not Syncedcuz it forces you to explore things in a slightly different way.
-
Not SyncedNow if you're a real beginner, it's just gonna be kinda be difficult right?
-
Not SyncedCuz you won't have enough vocabulary,
-
Not Syncedenough licks to try and kind of get your way around.
-
Not SyncedBut if you're able to do a solo, you know,
-
Not Syncedand you've got a little bit of vocabulary with your licks and stuff,
-
Not Syncedit's a really, really fun exercise.
-
Not SyncedYou think about just the minor pentatonic scale,
-
Not Syncedsuddenly you've got that gap
-
Not Syncedwhere you're not gonna play that second string.
-
Not SyncedSo all of like,
-
Not Syncedyou can't do those licks anymore.
-
Not SyncedIt would be,
-
Not Syncedcuz all of the second string's gone.
-
Not SyncedSo it'll really make you explore.
-
Not SyncedOne of the things that's kinda interesting is
-
Not Syncedto think along the strings instead of up and down.
-
Not SyncedMost people think in terms of positions.
-
Not SyncedBut if you've got a kind of a groove,
-
Not Syncedyou could,
-
Not SyncedThat was all just the thinner string.
-
Not SyncedSo, trying to avoid the second string
-
Not Syncedmeant that I just stayed on the 1 string.
-
Not SyncedWhich is really good cuz you're kind of exploring it.
-
Not SyncedI would never have played that particular line
-
Not Syncedhad I had access to the second string.
-
Not SyncedJust because my fingers wouldn't have done that.
-
Not SyncedAnd also, when you skip a string,
-
Not Syncedit sounds pretty interesting,
-
Not Syncedparticularly in blues, it's kinda more common
-
Not Syncedto do string skippy stuff in rock and metal.
-
Not SyncedBut in a blues context,
-
Not Syncedit's just a different kind of flavor that you get
-
Not Syncedwhen suddenly the second string's taken away.
-
Not SyncedIt's really weird, but it's a great experience
-
Not Syncedand a really good learning curve
-
Not Syncedcuz it is gonna happen sooner or later in your
-
Not Syncedguitar playing life you're gonna bust a string.
-
Not SyncedSo, much better to be prepare a little bit,
-
Not SyncedI'm not saying you practice this all the time,
-
Not Syncedjust as a fun thing, you know, you're in a bit of a rut,
-
Not Syncednot sure what to practice,
-
Not Syncedthis is the kind of thing that can open up a few doors,
-
Not Syncedmake you think just a little bit more different.
-
Not Synced"More different," terrible English.
-
Not SyncedIf anyone's learning English, forget that phrase.
-
Not SyncedThat's just really bad.
-
Not SyncedYou can see things differently is what I meant to say.
-
Not SyncedAnd it's a really cool, fun thing you know.
-
Not SyncedSo, go off and have an explore.
-
Not SyncedEither take the string off or just ban one string
-
Not Syncedfrom a particular improvisation.
-
Not SyncedSecond string's actually one of the hardest ones
-
Not Syncedbut it's a good one to start off with just because
-
Not Syncedit'll teach you straight away.
-
Not SyncedThinner string is a bit weird
-
Not Syncedbecause a lot of guys rely on the thinner string
-
Not Syncedfor moving around, and the thick strings,
-
Not Syncedfor your chord playing, could be interesting too.
-
Not SyncedGo off and have a check out of that idea,
-
Not Syncedand I'll see you for many more quick tips and lessons
-
Not Syncedand stuff very soon.
-
Not SyncedTake care of yourselves, bye bye.
