Whole Arm Vibrato (Technique Guitar Lesson TE-110)
-
0:18 - 0:19How you'all doing, Justin here.
-
0:19 - 0:22In this lesson today we're checking
out whole arm vibrato. -
0:22 - 0:24Now I'm going to be honest.
-
0:24 - 0:27This is a type of vibrato that I ignored
for probably fifteen years or more. -
0:28 - 0:32It was something that just didn't ever
feel right to me when I tried to play it. -
0:32 - 0:36I think the reason it didn't feel right
was cause I hadn't practiced it enough. -
0:36 - 0:41i had always done the traditional vibrato
which is where you put a finger down to -
0:42 - 0:47use as a pivot point on the side of your
hand like you were doing string bending. -
0:50 - 0:53And that's kind of the most common
way of doing vibrato. -
0:54 - 0:59But I was seeing Eric Johnson and Eric
Clapton doing this other vibrato and -
0:59 - 1:01it sounded different.
-
1:01 - 1:04And I guess there must have been value in
it if those guys were doing it that way -
1:04 - 1:08so I set about learning to do it. I did
it by a lot of watching, really, to be -
1:08 - 1:13honest, and experimenting myself. I got
some great advice from my buddy -
1:13 - 1:17Dario Cortese, which is watching videos of
the guys that you like doing the technique -
1:17 - 1:19you want to learn, with the sound off
-
1:19 - 1:24Because when the sound is on, our ears
are really overtaking things a little bit -
1:24 - 1:26You concentrate on that a bit more.
-
1:26 - 1:29But when you turn the sound off, you can
get a good look at what they're doing. -
1:29 - 1:36That was really interesting for me to see.
And it really is a whole arm vibrato. -
1:36 - 1:40The idea really is that with a traditional
vibrato, you're gripping the neck -
1:40 - 1:44quite solidly and you're using a pivot
point at the bottom of the neck, but -
1:44 - 1:48with this sort of vibrato, if we start off
I'm putting my first finger in the eighth -
1:48 - 1:50fret of the second string.
-
1:50 - 1:57When you play that note, you're actually
pushing and pulling with your whole arm. -
1:57 - 2:02If I just turn sort of sideways so that
you can see this part of my arm here -
2:02 - 2:09That's the motion. And what I found was
that keeping your hands, not tense, not -
2:09 - 2:17angry tense, but locked into the same
position so the fingers around the note -
2:17 - 2:22Also for some reason, poking the thumb up
the back of the guitar neck is something -
2:22 - 2:25all of the greats do and it does seem to
make it easier. I don't know why. -
2:25 - 2:30In theory it shouldn't matter really if
you hang everything off, but when it's -
2:30 - 2:37in a line a bit, the thumb's up the top
and the fingers are hanging down -
2:37 - 2:42it seems to make it a little easier. And
it's definitely a nice vibrato, this type. -
2:42 - 2:52This one doesn't sound as natural to me
now that I've been practicing this one. -
2:52 - 2:55It seems to sing a little more,
or something. -
2:55 - 2:59And you also get this sort of,
I'm not sure if it'll do it now. -
2:59 - 3:02There is this sort of scratchy thing
that happens, like that. -
3:02 - 3:06So you can get this other type of
scratchy thing that I don't really -
3:06 - 3:09understand either, to be completely
honest, but I just wanted to explain -
3:09 - 3:15to you this idea. First finger, eighth
fret, second string, making sure that -
3:15 - 3:19you get your thumb poking out
the top of the guitar -
3:19 - 3:23The motion is very much up and down.
If you'd try and do it side to side, -
3:23 - 3:26like that, it doesn't really do as much.
-
3:26 - 3:29There is a very mild vibrato there, but it
is not the type of vibrato that you want -
3:29 - 3:33if you are trying to copy the
Eric Clapton style. -
3:33 - 3:36The first finger is quite locked. It is
solidly in place. -
3:36 - 3:41Your hand is a little bit tense, not angry
tense, but holding its shape. -
3:41 - 3:49And then just start by pulling up and down
slowly with your arm. -
3:49 - 3:53Really slowly pushing down and then
pushing up. -
3:53 - 3:58It almost feels like it's kind of bouncey
-
3:58 - 4:06Just don't worry about the speed, just
trying to get it kind of flowing and even. -
4:06 - 4:09I do find that mine still sometimes
kind of goes from slow to fast -
4:09 - 4:16Particularly if I think about it too much.
It's really a great one to practice. -
4:16 - 4:20First finger is definitely easiest, so. I
recommend that you get that one down -
4:20 - 4:24first and when you're cool, you can have
a go using the other fingers as well. -
4:24 - 4:27It does work. It just doesn't feel quite
as comfortable for me. -
4:27 - 4:30And I do notice most of the guys who
are doing it are using the first finger -
4:30 - 4:34most of the time. Not all of the time, but
most of the time. -
4:34 - 4:42So just starting real slow. Remember
it's the arm. That's the position of it. -
4:42 - 4:52Your whole arm is pushing down.
Try it on different parts of the guitar. -
4:52 - 4:56Because it feels different. Like here,
I end up doing little circles when I'm -
4:56 - 5:01more down this end, I think because my
hand is further away from my body -
5:01 - 5:05It's a little bit more awkward to pull
straight down. It's possible, but if feels -
5:05 - 5:09a lot more awkward than here where the
whole weight of my arm is like doing a -
5:09 - 5:15bicep curl. It's a lot easier to get it
nice that way. -
5:15 - 5:20It feels again different up at the top and
there is another interesting thing that -
5:20 - 5:23happens as well, which is on
the thinnest string. -
5:23 - 5:28If you just do it regular on the thinnest
string, it just pulls the string off the -
5:28 - 5:34end. So when you do it on the thinnest
string, you have to be thinking of -
5:34 - 5:37pushing it up a little bit more.
-
5:37 - 5:45It's a great vibrato. It's got that
Freddie King thing that seems to work -
5:45 - 5:48for that style of older blues as well.
-
5:48 - 5:51It's a really interesting vibrato.
It takes a bit of practice. -
5:51 - 5:55The other thing you want to be aware of is
string noise. I'm doing some stuff here -
5:55 - 5:58with my pick hand, which I should
explain. When I'm doing it on the second -
5:58 - 6:05string, this hand, my third finger
is grabbing the thinnest string. -
6:05 - 6:10It's just touching the thinner string.
And my pick is resting on the third string -
6:10 - 6:16Cuz if I take that hand away, you get all
of these other notes ringing out. -
6:16 - 6:22The strings on either side because they're
getting touched by the motion of your hand -
6:22 - 6:28You get all of that stuff. So you want ...
nice clean notes. I'm just using the pick -
6:28 - 6:33on the third string and either my second
or third finger on the thinnest string -
6:33 - 6:36To keep everything nice and quiet.
-
6:36 - 6:43On the thinnest string, I'm using my pick
and the edge of my thumb is resting on -
6:43 - 6:51all of the strings, really making sure
that those other strings stay quiet. -
6:51 - 6:56Kind of an important part of this type of
vibrato. It is important in the other -
6:56 - 7:04traditional style of vibrato as well but
it's not as obviously bad. -
7:04 - 7:07So, I hope you have a bit of fun with the
whole arm vibrato. I love it. -
7:07 - 7:11I think it's great and I wish that I had
started practicing it 15 years ago instead -
7:11 - 7:13of a couple of years ago.
-
7:13 - 7:18Have fun. Take care. I'll see you for
another lesson very soon. Bye bye.
