Fourth Tunnel: tunnel of repetitions | Hikmat Mursalzade | TEDxADA
-
0:13 - 0:14Hi everybody.
-
0:14 - 0:16I am Hikmat, Hikmat Mursalzadeh.
-
0:16 - 0:20Today I am going to talk
about repetitions. -
0:20 - 0:22And I called this talk Fourth Tunnel
-
0:23 - 0:25- It doesn't work -
-
0:26 - 0:29and I called this talk the Fourth Tunnel
-
0:29 - 0:33because if we put a rat
in a maze with four tunnels, -
0:33 - 0:35and always put cheese
on the fourth tunnel, -
0:35 - 0:36after a while,
-
0:36 - 0:41that rat will learn to always go to
the fourth tunnel to get cheese. -
0:41 - 0:43We, humans, will do the same.
-
0:43 - 0:46We want cheese, down
the fourth tunnel, there is the cheese. -
0:46 - 0:48Next day you want cheese,
-
0:48 - 0:50down the fourth tunnel,
there is the cheese. -
0:50 - 0:54After a while, when you move
cheese to another tunnel, -
0:54 - 0:56something very interesting happens.
-
0:56 - 1:00The rat goes down the fourth tunnel,
there's no cheese in the fourth tunnel. -
1:00 - 1:02The rat comes out.
Goes down, no cheese, comes out. -
1:02 - 1:05Again, goes down, no cheese, comes out.
-
1:05 - 1:08Yes, the same thing over and over again.
-
1:08 - 1:11Now, here is the question:
-
1:11 - 1:14what is the difference
between the rats and human beings? -
1:14 - 1:16The answer is very simple:
-
1:16 - 1:19eventually, the rats find their way,
-
1:19 - 1:23but the human beings will go down
the fourth tunnel forever. -
1:23 - 1:28I say "forever", because as human beings,
we develop a belief in the fourth tunnel. -
1:28 - 1:32I mean, we repeat the same things
over and over again. -
1:32 - 1:37We believe that the only possible choice
after school is university, -
1:37 - 1:40the only possible choice after university
-
1:40 - 1:44is getting a full-time job
from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., -
1:44 - 1:47and that the only possible choice
after getting a job -
1:47 - 1:50is getting married and having children.
-
1:50 - 1:53So, we cannot think in a different way
-
1:53 - 1:57because we are intelligent,
social creatures that make judgments. -
1:57 - 2:01And these judgments define
our belief systems. -
2:01 - 2:05Let me quickly demonstrate it
through a little experiment. -
2:06 - 2:08Please, look at this picture.
-
2:08 - 2:10Who sees two shades of gray?
-
2:11 - 2:12Please raise your hand.
-
2:16 - 2:19And who sees only one shade of gray?
-
2:21 - 2:24And now, please raise both hands
-
2:24 - 2:27if you see the Fifty Shades of Grey.
-
2:29 - 2:33There can been seen
two different shades of gray, -
2:33 - 2:39but, if you cover the middle line
with your thumb, your your finger, -
2:39 - 2:42you will find out that there is
only one shade of gray. -
2:42 - 2:44They are the same colours,
-
2:44 - 2:47just our brain accepts the information
-
2:47 - 2:50through the judgments
of previous perceptions. -
2:50 - 2:54In detail, if we see
only one negative side of a person, -
2:55 - 2:59we accept him or her
totally negative or vice versa -
2:59 - 3:03because we simply establish
a belief in the fourth tunnel. -
3:03 - 3:08But rats do not believe in anything,
all they are interested in is just cheese. -
3:08 - 3:12And you, people, are unfortunately
human beings, not rats, -
3:12 - 3:15that is why, for a long time now
-
3:15 - 3:19you haven't been getting any cheese,
and your lives are not working. -
3:19 - 3:23You've got too many believes
in too many fourth tunnels. -
3:23 - 3:28Science says that these meaningless
attitudes are related to the zones; -
3:28 - 3:33boundaries of our psychological state,
our psychological mood. -
3:33 - 3:36And author of the book named
"Danger in the Comfort Zone", -
3:36 - 3:39Judith M. Bardwick, defined these zones.
-
3:39 - 3:41There are three zones.
-
3:41 - 3:44In the middle, you can see
the comfort zone. -
3:44 - 3:47First is the comfort zone,
where we get bored, -
3:47 - 3:51second one is stretch zone,
where we learn, -
3:51 - 3:54and the third one is
the panic zone, where we panic. -
3:54 - 4:00Please look at the [screen].
And don't let the name trick you. -
4:00 - 4:03Actually, the comfort zone
is not comfortable. -
4:03 - 4:08The comfort zone is just the zone
that we got used to be in. -
4:08 - 4:12For example, if you wake up
everyday at 7:30 a.m., -
4:12 - 4:17go to work, and work
from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., -
4:17 - 4:21every week meet with the same people
or even you need a direction, -
4:22 - 4:24you hesitate to talk to strangers,
-
4:24 - 4:27then you are stuck in your comfort zone.
-
4:27 - 4:33Because in the comfort zone,
stress can be equal to zero, -
4:33 - 4:37but also development is equal to zero.
-
4:37 - 4:40And if you are still trying
to keep yourself in the comfort zone, -
4:40 - 4:43you will never find the inventions
of our contemporaries. -
4:45 - 4:50No books or songs would be written.
No ideas would be nurtured. -
4:50 - 4:52No successful people would exist.
-
4:52 - 4:57So, we don't want to stay
in the comfort zone for too long. -
4:57 - 4:59The second one is the stretch zone.
-
5:02 - 5:06The stretch zone is totally opposite
to the comfort zone -
5:06 - 5:11because in the comfort zone,
stress and development equal to zero, -
5:11 - 5:17but in the stretch zone stress is 50,
-
5:17 - 5:20while development is 100.
-
5:20 - 5:24Because, life starts
at the end of comfort zone. -
5:24 - 5:27And great things never came
from comfort zone. -
5:28 - 5:33Let me quickly explain it
with the help of some tests. -
5:33 - 5:36Please get your paper and pens.
-
5:36 - 5:41Now, I have a very special task for you.
-
5:41 - 5:46First, I want you to draw a square,
-
5:49 - 5:52just an ordinary square.
-
5:52 - 5:54It is easy, yeah?
-
5:54 - 5:58And now, I want you to draw a triangle,
-
5:59 - 6:03not inside, just out,
somewhere on your paper. -
6:05 - 6:11And now, I want you to draw
a square with three lines. -
6:11 - 6:16I am repeating, a square with three lines.
-
6:16 - 6:20I didn't say an ordinary
square with four lines, -
6:20 - 6:23but I said with three lines.
-
6:23 - 6:28And these three lines
should be solid or straight. -
6:29 - 6:31Do not hesitate, it is possible.
-
6:31 - 6:37By the way, there are some extra rules
that you can not break; -
6:37 - 6:41for example, I don't want you
to draw anything like this, -
6:41 - 6:46or I don't want you to draw
anything like this. -
6:46 - 6:51It is not acceptable,
and they will not work here. -
6:51 - 6:55Also after drawing something like this,
you can not fold the paper. -
6:55 - 6:59You have 20 seconds,
and let's get started. -
7:01 - 7:03I know that it must be challenging,
-
7:03 - 7:06but at least try to draw something.
-
7:07 - 7:13Oh, you have 10 seconds, 10, 9, 8, 7,
-
7:13 - 7:18and then 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, and 1.
-
7:18 - 7:19It's time.
-
7:19 - 7:21Probably you didn't think
-
7:24 - 7:29that the answer is this one.
-
7:30 - 7:34A square with three lines.
-
7:34 - 7:38A few seconds ago, you were just stuck
on your comfort zone. -
7:38 - 7:43After this experiment,
you had to enter to the stretch zone. -
7:43 - 7:49And as you see, stress is equal to 50,
while development is 100; -
7:49 - 7:53because you learnt something,
thinking in different way. -
7:53 - 7:57And you became more creative,
and it was development. -
7:57 - 8:03If comfort zone is so dangerous,
and stretch zone is so helpful, -
8:03 - 8:08how can we leave our comfort zone
and enter the stretch zone? -
8:09 - 8:13Before the answer,
let's quickly demonstrate -
8:13 - 8:17the third and the last one: panic zone.
-
8:17 - 8:21Simply put, panic zone is loosing control.
-
8:21 - 8:25If you can no longer think
under high stress, -
8:25 - 8:29then you are probably stuck
on your panic zone. -
8:29 - 8:32Because in panic zone,
-
8:32 - 8:37stress is equal to 100,
-
8:37 - 8:39while development is equal to zero.
-
8:39 - 8:43I need a volunteer
to demonstrate the panic zone. -
8:43 - 8:47Who wants to be a volunteer?
Please, raise your hand. -
8:47 - 8:49By the way, it is a magic trick.
-
8:53 - 8:55You madam, please.
-
8:55 - 8:57Please, take a seat,
-
9:01 - 9:05and please choose one of these cards.
-
9:05 - 9:09But don't show it to me,
just try to keep it in your mind. -
9:09 - 9:12But you can show it
to the audience, by the way. -
9:14 - 9:15(Woman picking a card)
-
9:18 - 9:20Show it to the audience.
-
9:23 - 9:24Is it OK?
-
9:24 - 9:30And now, I want you
to put your card down here. -
9:30 - 9:35And I want you to say "stop"
whenever you want. -
9:37 - 9:39Your card must be somewhere right here.
-
9:39 - 9:41And I will try to find it.
-
9:43 - 9:46Also, you will have [to do] this:
-
9:47 - 9:50I will show you two cards,
-
9:50 - 9:54and one of them will be your card.
-
9:54 - 9:56Is it your card?
-
9:58 - 10:00Please put your hand over.
-
10:00 - 10:02Is it your card?
-
10:02 - 10:05Please put your hand over.
-
10:05 - 10:11And now, I will ask you a question,
-
10:11 - 10:14but [with two] conditions.
-
10:14 - 10:18One: the question will be so quick,
-
10:20 - 10:23our volunteer's answer
should be quick, also. -
10:23 - 10:27The second one: you have
to answer without thinking. -
10:27 - 10:28Deal?
-
10:30 - 10:31Are you ready?
-
10:33 - 10:36Are you ready? Really?
Are you sure that you are ready? -
10:36 - 10:403, 2, and 1. Right or left?
-
10:40 - 10:42(woman) Right. Left.
-
10:44 - 10:48She is already stuck in her panic zone.
-
10:48 - 10:50OK, your answer is...
-
10:51 - 10:52Right.
-
10:52 - 10:57Please open your right hand
to show it to everyone. -
11:03 - 11:04(Laughter)
-
11:11 - 11:13There is nothing impossible.
-
11:13 - 11:14Thank you.
-
11:14 - 11:15(Applause)
-
11:20 - 11:27As you see, our volunteer's stress was 100
-
11:28 - 11:32because all audience's
attention was on her, -
11:32 - 11:35and this high stress blocked her brain.
-
11:35 - 11:39And as you see,
the development was equal to zero. -
11:41 - 11:46So, if comfort zone
and panic zone are so dangerous, -
11:46 - 11:48how can we leave these zones?
-
11:48 - 11:52The answer is very simple: do new things.
-
11:52 - 11:58Let me tell you a story on
how this applies to real life situation. -
11:58 - 12:04Here you can see my friends,
Seymour, Nora, and Rick. -
12:04 - 12:09Three weeks ago, a Dutch couple
from the Netherlands, Nora and Rick, -
12:09 - 12:13came to Baku
as part of their world travel. -
12:13 - 12:18They were like everyone else,
leading their regular life style, -
12:18 - 12:21working from 9 a.m. to 6p.m.,
-
12:21 - 12:24and then meeting with friends
at the weekends. -
12:24 - 12:30Briefly, they got too many believes
in too many fourth tunnels. -
12:30 - 12:33They were stuck in their comfort zone
-
12:33 - 12:38until they decided
to spend all their money, -
12:38 - 12:42all their savings
on their three years long trip. -
12:42 - 12:44So here is new things.
-
12:44 - 12:47These new things can be playing guitar,
-
12:47 - 12:52learning a new language,
traveling to unknown places, -
12:52 - 12:56quitting a permanent job,
and creating a career. -
12:56 - 13:00Or at least, changing the way
that you go to work. -
13:01 - 13:04Because, it is very important.
-
13:05 - 13:08Do new things, make new mistakes,
-
13:08 - 13:12because making new mistakes
creates new opportunities. -
13:12 - 13:15New mistake, new mistake, new mistake,
-
13:15 - 13:18but all together,
it is a great opportunity. -
13:18 - 13:24And finally, doing new things
for me is solving the pyraminx. -
13:24 - 13:29The pyraminx is a tetrahedral puzzle
in the style of the Rubik's cube -
13:29 - 13:33that was invented before the Rubik's cube.
-
13:33 - 13:35It was patented by Uwe Mèffert.
-
13:35 - 13:39It is easy to guess
that it is something not easy to solve. -
13:39 - 13:43But take it easy,
because we all get into troubles. -
13:43 - 13:47We look at our life, we want to solve it.
We want to figure it out. -
13:47 - 13:51We want to solve this part,
but scramble the other part. -
13:54 - 13:59We want to solve lab issues,
but skip lessons at university. -
13:59 - 14:02But don't forget
that life is like a pyraminx, -
14:02 - 14:04and it is solved step by step.
-
14:04 - 14:05(Applause)
-
14:11 - 14:13And as Robin Sharma said,
-
14:13 - 14:17after living the same 75 years,
don't call it life. -
14:17 - 14:19Get out of the comfort zone.
-
14:19 - 14:20Thanks for [your] attention.
-
14:20 - 14:22(Applause)
