What is Human Trafficking
-
0:15 - 0:18In a small sleepy town,
people are dreaming. -
0:19 - 0:22But not everyone's dreams will come true.
-
0:24 - 0:26Human traffic is prey on people's dreams
-
0:27 - 0:29and lure them away for their own
benefit. -
0:30 - 0:31How do they do this?
-
0:33 - 0:35Human trafficking doesn't happen
all of a sudden. -
0:36 - 0:37It's a process.
-
0:44 - 0:45First traffickers act.
-
0:46 - 0:48This includes recruiting victims,
-
0:48 - 0:51transporting them to the place
where they will be exploited, -
0:51 - 0:53hiding them from authorities,
-
0:53 - 0:56and receiving victims from
other traffickers. -
0:56 - 0:59So why don't the
victims run away or say no ? -
0:59 - 1:01Because traffickers use different means.
-
1:01 - 1:05This includes threatening or forcing
victims to do what they want, -
1:05 - 1:08abducting or deceiving the victim
and abusing power. -
1:08 - 1:11Sometimes, traffickers promise
small payments or benefits -
1:11 - 1:13to get the victim to cooperate.
-
1:13 - 1:15And why are the traffickers doing this?
-
1:15 - 1:18The purpose of trafficking is
Exploitation. -
1:19 - 1:23Traffickers take advantage of victims
for their own profits or benefit. -
1:23 - 1:25This is Human Trafficking.
-
1:29 - 1:30This man's neighbour tells him
-
1:30 - 1:34that he has a great job for him on a
very safe construction site, -
1:34 - 1:36and that he will be paid a a lot of
money. -
1:38 - 1:40With more money he can make his
dreams come true. -
1:44 - 1:46He agrees to take the job.
-
1:47 - 1:50A few days later the
neighbour's friend picks him up, -
1:50 - 1:52and they drive to the construction site.
-
1:52 - 1:54It's a very long way from his home.
-
1:55 - 1:57This man is put to work immediately
-
1:57 - 1:59without any training or protective
equipment -
1:59 - 2:02without enough to eat or drink and
with very few breaks. -
2:02 - 2:06After many months, he's only being paid
a fraction of what he was promised. -
2:06 - 2:09He knows he's being tricked, but he
doesn't have enough money to get home. -
2:09 - 2:12This man is a victim of Human Trafficking.
-
2:13 - 2:14He was recruited by his neighbour,
-
2:15 - 2:16and tricked into thinking,
-
2:16 - 2:20he was going to work at a safe
construction site for fair paying. -
2:20 - 2:25Instead, he was forced to work long hours
in unsafe conditions for almost no money -
2:25 - 2:28what others benefited from his
exploitation. -
2:29 - 2:31One day while looking for jobs online,
-
2:31 - 2:36this woman comes across an opportunity
to work in a restaurant in a big city. -
2:37 - 2:42Her application is successful and her new
employer arranges for her travel fare. -
2:43 - 2:46She is met at the airport and driven
to a part of the city -
2:46 - 2:48that looks nothing like she expected.
-
2:49 - 2:51The car pulls up to a building.
-
2:51 - 2:53The door shut and locked behind her.
-
2:54 - 2:57She is made to perform
sex acts against her will. -
3:02 - 3:03She is trapped.
-
3:08 - 3:11This woman is a victim of
Human Trafficking. -
3:11 - 3:15She was transported by a trafficker
from the airport to location of the job. -
3:16 - 3:20When she arrived at the location and
realized it was not the restaurant job -
3:20 - 3:24she was expecting, the traffickers
used force to keep her there. -
3:24 - 3:26She was then exploited for
forced sex work. -
3:33 - 3:37This 14 year old boy on school break
is approached on the street -
3:37 - 3:39by a woman who looks trustworthy.
-
3:39 - 3:42She tells him that she needs workers
at her factory. -
3:43 - 3:45And she promises him lots of money.
-
3:46 - 3:48He brings her to meet his parents,
-
3:48 - 3:49they are so happy for him.
-
3:49 - 3:52He'll be now able to save money
for school. -
3:54 - 3:57The woman drives him to the
next town. -
4:00 - 4:01They pull up to an old building.
-
4:02 - 4:04There is someone waiting for him.
-
4:05 - 4:08As he is let inside,
the nice lady drives off. -
4:09 - 4:11The factory isn't anything like she
described. -
4:11 - 4:15There are a lots of people working
including many children. -
4:15 - 4:16He works all day,
-
4:16 - 4:19and after just a few hours of sleep
he starts again. -

4:23 - 4:24He misses his family.

- What is Human Trafficking
- Description:
-
In a small town, people are dreaming: a man dreams of buying a house; a woman dreams of travelling; and an adolescent dreams of attending university. As each story plays out, we watch the devastating, step-by-step process of human traffickers taking advantage of these dreams. This five-minute animated video illustrates how human trafficking doesn’t happen all at once, but rather is a process of three elements: Act, Means and Purpose.
