What is Human Trafficking

  • 0:15 - 0:18
    In a small sleepy town,
    people are dreaming.
  • 0:19 - 0:22
But not everyone's dreams will come true.
  • 0:24 - 0:26
Human traffic is prey on people's dreams
  • 0:27 - 0:29
and lure them away for their own
    benefit.
  • 0:30 - 0:31
    How do they do this?
  • 0:33 - 0:35
    Human trafficking doesn't happen
    all of a sudden.
  • 0:36 - 0:37
    It's a process.
  • 0:44 - 0:45
    First traffickers act.
  • 0:46 - 0:48
    This includes recruiting victims,
  • 0:48 - 0:51
    transporting them to the place
    where they will be exploited,
  • 0:51 - 0:53
    hiding them from authorities,
  • 0:53 - 0:56
    and receiving victims from
    other traffickers.
  • 0:56 - 0:59
    So why don't the
victims run away or say no ?
  • 0:59 - 1:01
    Because traffickers use different means.
  • 1:01 - 1:05
    This includes threatening or forcing
victims to do what they want,
  • 1:05 - 1:08
    abducting or deceiving the victim
    and abusing power.
  • 1:08 - 1:11
    Sometimes, traffickers promise
    small payments or benefits
  • 1:11 - 1:13
to get the victim to cooperate.
  • 1:13 - 1:15
And why are the traffickers doing this?
  • 1:15 - 1:18
    The purpose of trafficking is
    Exploitation.
  • 1:19 - 1:23
    Traffickers take advantage of victims
for their own profits or benefit.
  • 1:23 - 1:25
    This is Human Trafficking.
  • 1:29 - 1:30
    This man's neighbour tells him
  • 1:30 - 1:34
that he has a great job for him on a
    very safe construction site,
  • 1:34 - 1:36
and that he will be paid a a lot of
    money.
  • 1:38 - 1:40
With more money he can make his
    dreams come true.
  • 1:44 - 1:46
He agrees to take the job.
  • 1:47 - 1:50
    A few days later the
    neighbour's friend picks him up,
  • 1:50 - 1:52
and they drive to the construction site.
  • 1:52 - 1:54
It's a very long way from his home.
  • 1:55 - 1:57
This man is put to work immediately
  • 1:57 - 1:59
    without any training or protective
    equipment
  • 1:59 - 2:02
without enough to eat or drink and
    with very few breaks.
  • 2:02 - 2:06
After many months, he's only being paid
a fraction of what he was promised.
  • 2:06 - 2:09
He knows he's being tricked, but he
doesn't have enough money to get home.
  • 2:09 - 2:12
This man is a victim of Human Trafficking.
  • 2:13 - 2:14
He was recruited by his neighbour,
  • 2:15 - 2:16
    and tricked into thinking,
  • 2:16 - 2:20
he was going to work at a safe
    construction site for fair paying.
  • 2:20 - 2:25
Instead, he was forced to work long hours
in unsafe conditions for almost no money
  • 2:25 - 2:28
    what others benefited from his
    exploitation.
  • 2:29 - 2:31
One day while looking for jobs online,
  • 2:31 - 2:36
this woman comes across an opportunity
to work in a restaurant in a big city.
  • 2:37 - 2:42
Her application is successful and her new
employer arranges for her travel fare.
  • 2:43 - 2:46
She is met at the airport and driven
to a part of the city
  • 2:46 - 2:48
that looks nothing like she expected.
  • 2:49 - 2:51
The car pulls up to a building.
  • 2:51 - 2:53
The door shut and locked behind her.
  • 2:54 - 2:57
    She is made to perform
    sex acts against her will.
  • 3:02 - 3:03
    She is trapped.
  • 3:08 - 3:11
This woman is a victim of
    Human Trafficking.
  • 3:11 - 3:15
She was transported by a trafficker
from the airport to location of the job.
  • 3:16 - 3:20
When she arrived at the location and
realized it was not the restaurant job
  • 3:20 - 3:24
    she was expecting, the traffickers
used force to keep her there.
  • 3:24 - 3:26
    She was then exploited for
    forced sex work.
  • 3:33 - 3:37
This 14 year old boy on school break
    is approached on the street
  • 3:37 - 3:39
by a woman who looks trustworthy.
  • 3:39 - 3:42
She tells him that she needs workers
    at her factory.
  • 3:43 - 3:45
And she promises him lots of money.
  • 3:46 - 3:48
He brings her to meet his parents,
  • 3:48 - 3:49
they are so happy for him.
  • 3:49 - 3:52
He'll be now able to save money
    for school.
  • 3:54 - 3:57
The woman drives him to the
    next town.
  • 4:00 - 4:01
They pull up to an old building.
  • 4:02 - 4:04
There is someone waiting for him.
  • 4:05 - 4:08
    As he is let inside,
    the nice lady drives off.
  • 4:09 - 4:11
The factory isn't anything like she
    described.
  • 4:11 - 4:15
There are a lots of people working
    including many children.
  • 4:15 - 4:16
    He works all day,
  • 4:16 - 4:19
and after just a few hours of sleep
    he starts again.
  • 4:19 - 4:22
He is sad, this isn't what he expected.
  • 4:23 - 4:24
    He misses his family.
  • 4:24 - 4:29
After weeks, he still hasn't received any
salary or been allowed to contact them.
  • 4:30 - 4:31
    He is trapped.
  • 4:31 - 4:34
This boy is a victim of Human Trafficking.
  • 4:34 - 4:38
He was tricked by the woman who
    recruited him on the street.
  • 4:38 - 4:42
He was then received by a trafficker
when he arrived at the factory
  • 4:42 - 4:45
    and exploited by being forced
    to sew clothing.
  • 4:45 - 4:47
For anyone under the age of 18,
  • 4:47 - 4:53
only the act in purpose matter for it to
legally be a case of human trafficking.
  • 4:53 - 4:57
    Understanding that human trafficking
    doesn't happen all at once,
  • 4:57 - 5:01
but instead is a process of
    act, mean, and purpose,
  • 5:01 - 5:04
    helps us better identify victims
    and trafficking trends.
  • 5:08 - 5:10
    People everywhere are dreaming.
  • 5:11 - 5:15
    And looking for opportunities to
    make those dreams come true.
Title:
What is Human Trafficking
Description:

In a small town, people are dreaming: a man dreams of buying a house; a woman dreams of travelling; and an adolescent dreams of attending university. As each story plays out, we watch the devastating, step-by-step process of human traffickers taking advantage of these dreams. This five-minute animated video illustrates how human trafficking doesn’t happen all at once, but rather is a process of three elements: Act, Means and Purpose.
