A day in the life of a Mongolian queen - Anne F. Broadbridge
-
0:08 - 0:12As dawn breaks over a moveable city
of ten thousand yurts, -
0:12 - 0:16Queen Boraqchin is in
for a rude awakening. -
0:16 - 0:19A rogue sheep has slipped past her
servants and guards -
0:19 - 0:21and bolted into her yurt,
-
0:21 - 0:25where he springs into bed
and bleats in her ear. -
0:25 - 0:28Although she’s the formidable khatun
of the Golden Horde, -
0:28 - 0:31a huge kingdom in the Mongolian Empire,
-
0:31 - 0:34Boraqchin has a hands-on
approach to ruling. -
0:34 - 0:36She’s been married to Batu Khan,
-
0:36 - 0:39the fearsome grandson
of Genghis Khan himself, -
0:39 - 0:41since she was fifteen –
-
0:41 - 0:43and while her husband is out on his raids,
-
0:43 - 0:48she juggles the duties of flocks,
family and empire at home. -
0:48 - 0:53This makes her the manager –
and the mover – of a city of thousands. -
0:53 - 0:57Twice a year, Boraqchin moves the city
between two seasonal camping grounds. -
0:57 - 1:01This ensures constant water
and lush grass in summer, -
1:01 - 1:05and protection from harsh winds in winter.
-
1:05 - 1:08The whole operation requires
weeks of strict planning, -
1:08 - 1:11liaising with the other camps in her
domain, strategic delegation – -
1:11 - 1:15and the patience to move at the speed
of dawdling animals. -
1:15 - 1:17Today is moving day,
-
1:17 - 1:22and she’ll have to direct throngs of her
ladies, commanders, slaves and animals -
1:22 - 1:25up the river Volga for the summer.
-
1:25 - 1:27As Boraqchin steps outside,
-
1:27 - 1:29she’s greeted by a commotion –
-
1:29 - 1:33her unwanted visitor is now running
circles around her stewards. -
1:33 - 1:37They’re attempting to stow her possessions
securely into wagons. -
1:37 - 1:40Boraqchin orders them
to get it under control – -
1:40 - 1:44but she’s the only one quick
enough to catch the stray. -
1:44 - 1:48She next supervises her ladies who are
unpinning her yurt -
1:48 - 1:50and lifting it onto its custom wagon.
-
1:50 - 1:53It requires a team of twenty oxen to pull,
-
1:53 - 1:57and Boraqchin wouldn’t trust anyone
to steer it but herself. -
1:57 - 2:01Next, Boraqchin and her woolly companion
meet with the guards. -
2:01 - 2:05She orders them to keep close watch
on her husband's special reception yurt -
2:05 - 2:08and port-able throne during the journey.
-
2:08 - 2:10They’ll also act as outriders,
-
2:10 - 2:13and she tells them how to secure the
route, surround her for safety – -
2:13 - 2:16and keep the animals in check.
-
2:16 - 2:20But when the sheep finally breaks free
and makes for the fields, -
2:20 - 2:21the guards can barely keep up
-
2:21 - 2:25as it scampers through crowds
packing up their yurts. -
2:25 - 2:29Exasperated, Boraqchin rides down
to the pastures herself. -
2:29 - 2:30When she gets there,
-
2:30 - 2:35she catches sight of the troublesome sheep
wriggling into the middle of a flock. -
2:35 - 2:36When she follows him in,
-
2:36 - 2:39he’s nestled next to a ewe, his mother.
-
2:39 - 2:42She’s pregnant,
and seems to be in pain. -
2:42 - 2:46With a start, Boraqchin realizes
that this ewe’s impending delivery -
2:46 - 2:49has been forgotten in
the flurry of moving day. -
2:49 - 2:51There’s no time to find a shepherd –
-
2:51 - 2:55instead, Boraqchin rolls up her sleeves,
greases her arm -
2:55 - 3:00and helps the ewe give birth to two new
additions to the empire. -
3:00 - 3:02Leaving the lambs and their mother,
-
3:02 - 3:04Boraqchin dashes back to the camp.
-
3:04 - 3:07Here the final touches have
been put to packing, -
3:07 - 3:10and vehicles are starting to line up.
-
3:10 - 3:12This vast procession starts with the queen
-
3:12 - 3:16and two hundred wagons
filled with her treasures. -
3:16 - 3:18Next up are the junior wives and crew,
-
3:18 - 3:20then the concubines –
-
3:20 - 3:23and this is only Boraqchin's camp.
-
3:23 - 3:25After this comes the second imperial camp
-
3:25 - 3:27led by another senior wife,
-
3:27 - 3:30then two more camps, also led by wives.
-
3:30 - 3:33Boraqchin has been checking in
with them for weeks to ensure -
3:33 - 3:36a smooth departure and orderly queue.
-
3:36 - 3:39But they only make up the
royal portion of the line – -
3:39 - 3:42behind them winds
the entire civilian city, -
3:42 - 3:45which includes holy men
with portable chapels and mosques, -
3:45 - 3:48families, tradesmen, and shepherds.
-
3:48 - 3:52Finally, Boraqchin settles into her wagon.
-
3:52 - 3:54It’ll take weeks to reach
their destination – -
3:54 - 3:56but over the course of the journey,
-
3:56 - 3:59she’ll keep everyone expertly in check –
-
3:59 - 4:01from her proud children
and attentive subjects, -
4:01 - 4:05to the most meandering sheep
at the back of line.
