The jobs we'll lose to machines -- and the ones we won't

    and her dad is a lawyer.

    the jobs her parents do
    are going to look dramatically different.

    In 2013, researchers at Oxford University
  • 0:19 - 0:21
    did a study on the future of work.
  • 0:21 - 0:25
    They concluded that almost one
    in every two jobs have a high risk
  • 0:25 - 0:28
    of being automated by machines.
  • 0:28 - 0:30
    Now, machine learning is the technology
  • 0:30 - 0:33
    that's responsible for most
    of this disruption.
  • 0:33 - 0:35
    It's the most powerful branch
    of artificial intelligence.
  • 0:35 - 0:39
    It allows machines to learn from data
    and mimic some of the things
  • 0:39 - 0:40
    that humans can do.
  • 0:40 - 0:43
    Now my company, Kaggle, operates on
    the cutting edge of of machine learning.

    We bring together hundreds of thousands
    of experts to solve important problems
  • 0:47 - 0:50
    for industry and academia.
  • 0:50 - 0:52
    So this gives us a unique perspective
    on what machines can do,
  • 0:52 - 0:54
    what they can't do,
  • 0:54 - 0:58
    and what jobs they might
    automate or threaten.

    So machine learning started making
    its way into industry in the early '90s,
  • 1:01 - 1:03
    and it started
    with relatively simple tasks.
  • 1:03 - 1:06
    It started with things like
    assessing credit risk
  • 1:06 - 1:08
    from loan applications,
  • 1:08 - 1:12
    sorting the mail by reading
    handwritten characters from zip codes.
  • 1:12 - 1:15
    Over the past few years, we have made
    dramatic breakthroughs.
  • 1:15 - 1:20
    Machine learning is now capable
    of far, far more complex tasks.

    In 2012, Kaggle challenged its community
    to build an algorithm
  • 1:24 - 1:26
    that could grade high school essays.
  • 1:26 - 1:31
    The winning algorithms were able to match
    the grades given by human teachers.
  • 1:31 - 1:34
    Last year, we issued an even
    more difficult challenge.
  • 1:34 - 1:37
    Can you take images of the eye
    and diagnose an eye disease
  • 1:37 - 1:39
    called diabetic retinopathy?
  • 1:39 - 1:43
    Again, the winning algorithms
    were able to match the diagnoses
  • 1:43 - 1:46
    given by human ophthalmologists.
  • 1:46 - 1:49
    Now given the right data,
    machines are going to outperform humans
  • 1:49 - 1:50
    at tasks like this.
  • 1:50 - 1:54
    A teacher might read 10,000 essays
    over a 40-year career.
  • 1:54 - 1:57
    An ophthalmologist might see 50,000 eyes.
  • 1:57 - 2:02
    A machine can read millions of essays
    or see millions of eyes within minutes.

    We have no chance of competing
    against machines on frequent,
  • 2:06 - 2:09
    high-volume tasks.
  • 2:09 - 2:13
    But there are things that we can do
    that machines can't do.

    Where machines have made
    very little progress
  • 2:15 - 2:17
    is in tackling novel situations.
  • 2:17 - 2:21
    They can't handle things they haven't
    seen many times before.
  • 2:21 - 2:24
    The fundamental limitations
    of machine learning
  • 2:24 - 2:27
    is that it needs to learn
    from large volumes of past data.
  • 2:27 - 2:29
    Now humans don't.
  • 2:29 - 2:32
    We have the ability to connect
    seemingly disparate threads
  • 2:32 - 2:35
    to solve problems we've never seen before.
  • 2:35 - 2:39
    Persy Spencer was a physicist
    working on radar during World War II
  • 2:39 - 2:42
    when he noticed the magnetron
    was melting his chocolate bar,
  • 2:42 - 2:45
    so he was able to connect
    his understanding
  • 2:45 - 2:46
    of electromagnetic radiation
    with his knowledge of cooking
  • 2:46 - 2:50
    in order to invent -- any guesses? --
    the microwave oven.
  • 2:50 - 2:55
    Now, this is a particularly remarkable
    example of creativity,
  • 2:55 - 2:58
    but this sort of cross-pollination
    happens for each of us in small ways
  • 2:58 - 3:00
    thousands of times per day.
  • 3:00 - 3:04
    Machines cannot compete with us
    when it comes to tackling novel situations
  • 3:04 - 3:08
    and this puts a fundamental limit
    on the human tasks
  • 3:08 - 3:10
    that machines will automate.
  • 3:10 - 3:13
    So what does this mean
    for the future of work?
  • 3:13 - 3:17
    The future state of any single job lies
    in the answer to a single question:
  • 3:17 - 3:22
    to what extent is that job reduceable
    to frequent, high-volume tasks,
  • 3:22 - 3:26
    and to what extent does it involve
    tackling novel situations?
  • 3:26 - 3:30
    On frequent, high-volume tasks,
    machines are getting smarter and smarter.
  • 3:30 - 3:33
    Today they grade essays.
    They diagnose certain diseases.
  • 3:33 - 3:36
    Over coming years, they're going
    to conduct our audits
  • 3:36 - 3:39
    and they're going to read boilerplate
    from legal contracts.
  • 3:39 - 3:41
    Accountants and lawyers are still needed.
  • 3:41 - 3:43
    They're going to be needed
    for complex tax structuring,
  • 3:43 - 3:44
    for pathbreaking litigation.
  • 3:44 - 3:48
    But machines will shrink their ranks
    and make these jobs harder to come by.
  • 3:48 - 3:52
    Now, as mentioned, machines are not
    making progress on novel situations.
  • 3:52 - 3:56
    The copy behind a marketing campaign
    needs to grab consumers' attention.
  • 3:56 - 3:58
    It has to stand out from the crowd.

    Business strategy means finding
    gaps in the market,
  • 4:00 - 4:02
    things that nobody else is doing.
  • 4:02 - 4:06
    It will be humans that are creating
    the copy behind our marketing campaigns,

    and it will be humans that are developing
    our business strategy.

    So ??, whatever you decide to do,

    let every day bring you a new challenge.

    If it does, then you will stay
    ahead of the machines.
