โขนกลางแปลง: พระลักษมณ์โดนศรนาคบาศ | Point of View On Tour EP.37 x Balloon Fiesta

  • 0:00 - 0:02
Hi, this is View from Point of View channel.
  • 0:02 - 0:05
We're now at Suvarnabhumi Airport, again!
  • 0:05 - 0:08
I'm gonna give you a hint, we're going somewhere.
  • 0:08 - 0:11
But we're not traveling abroad this time, we're traveling in Thailand.
  • 0:11 - 0:13
We're going there because I've heard that,
  • 0:13 - 0:17
this particular show, which is exceptional, is taking place in Chiangrai Province.
  • 0:17 - 0:20
    It's Khon Klang Plaeng everyone!
  • 0:20 - 0:24
So, I suggest that we got on the plane to Chiangrai Province
  • 0:24 - 0:26
and let's go see Khon Klang Plaeng.
  • 0:26 - 0:28
    Let's see what it is
  • 0:28 - 0:31
and see if there's any difference from regular Khon that we've seen.
  • 0:31 - 0:32
    Before arriving in Chiangrai Province,
  • 0:32 - 0:35
don't forget to follow me on social media.
  • 0:35 - 0:38
Okay, are you ready for the fun and the learning?
  • 0:38 - 0:41
If so, let's hit the road!
  • 0:46 - 0:47
    We're now in Chiangrai!
  • 0:48 - 0:52
People might be wondering why must we come all the way to Chiangrai Province for Khon Klang Plaeng.
  • 0:52 - 0:54
Other provinces also have Khon, why are we coming here?
  • 0:55 - 0:59
Well, I must say that it's because this one particular event is taking place in Chiang Rai --
  • 0:59 - 1:02
which is International Balloon Festival 2019
  • 1:02 - 1:07
or Singha Park Chiangrai International Balloon Fiesta 2019.
  • 1:07 - 1:11
The festival took place in February 13 to 17
  • 1:11 - 1:13
at Singha Park in Chiangrai Province.
  • 1:13 - 1:15
Since it is an international balloon festival
  • 1:15 - 1:16
    there must be balloon races
  • 1:16 - 1:19
    and colorful balloon shows.
  • 1:19 - 1:21
But what does balloon have to do with Khon anyway?
  • 1:21 - 1:24
Well, for this balloon festival ---
  • 1:24 - 1:27
there isn't just balloons, but also other activities,
  • 1:27 - 1:30
    like concerts of great singers.
  • 1:30 - 1:32
When I was at the concert, there was Palmy
  • 1:32 - 1:33
    Nuvo
  • 1:33 - 1:34
    Poly Cat
  • 1:34 - 1:35
    Hugo was also there.
  • 1:36 - 1:38
Oh, please! There was too much to count.
  • 1:38 - 1:41
And apart from that, there's also food stalls around.
  • 1:41 - 1:44
This is truly a space for family gathering.
  • 1:44 - 1:47
The best part is that ---
  • 1:47 - 1:50
the organizers also value Thai identity.
  • 1:51 - 1:55
That's why they have Khon as one of their shows.
  • 1:55 - 1:57
And since there are foreigners everywhere, Khon is a great way to promote Thai culture.
  • 1:57 - 1:58
    Moreover,
  • 1:58 - 2:01
Khon they're performing is also Khon Klang Plaeng.
  • 2:01 - 2:04
This year marks the second time of this festival.
  • 2:04 - 2:06
Last year was its first time,
  • 2:06 - 2:10
to have Khon Klang Plaeng performance in the festival.
  • 2:10 - 2:11
    Are you guys seeing this?
  • 2:11 - 2:13
    This festival has everything!
  • 2:13 - 2:17
    Khon performance, concerts, great food
  • 2:17 - 2:19
    and views for nice pictures
  • 2:19 - 2:22
which you guys might already see on my Instagram feed.
  • 2:22 - 2:23
    That was very off-topic.
  • 2:23 - 2:25
There's only 2 rounds of Khon performance.
  • 2:25 - 2:26
But I'm in Chiangrai for so many days.
  • 2:26 - 2:28
    Feeling so motivated.
  • 2:28 - 2:31
If you guys are ready, let's go see Khon Klang Plaeng!
  • 2:32 - 2:32
  • 2:32 - 2:33
    Okay everyone
  • 2:33 - 2:37
    After 2 days in Chiangrai,
  • 2:37 - 2:39
    I've done so many things.
  • 2:39 - 2:41
2 days at the balloon festival ---
  • 2:41 - 2:45
I went to the concerts, I flew on hot air balloon
  • 2:45 - 2:47
and most importantly, I already took a sneak peek at the rehearsal.
  • 2:47 - 2:49
And finally, the day has come.
  • 2:49 - 2:52
The day of Khon Klang Plaeng performance.
  • 2:52 - 2:56
And right now, we're here at Singha Park in Chiangrai Province.
  • 2:56 - 2:59
I'll take you guys to see Khon Klang Plaeng then!
  • 2:59 - 3:02
First off, this is the right venue for Khon Klang Plaeng
  • 3:03 - 3:07
because it needs space, like, big grass field,
  • 3:07 - 3:10
to play battle scenes. Khon Klang Plaeng's stories are always from battle scenes.
  • 3:10 - 3:12
And it's really rare these days.
  • 3:12 - 3:16
Even more than that, the performers for the show are the artists from Wang-Na!
  • 3:16 - 3:17
I already saw it last night.
  • 3:17 - 3:19
And I can tell you, it's gonna be an eye-opening experience.
  • 3:19 - 3:21
Let's go see Khon Klang Plaeng performance
  • 3:21 - 3:23
    And I'll explain later --
  • 3:23 - 3:25
why must it be Khon Klang Plaeng
  • 3:25 - 3:27
, what's the difference between Khon Klang Plaeng and Khon we've seen often
  • 3:28 - 3:29
and how many types of Khon there are.
  • 3:29 - 3:30
    Let's go see the performance!
  • 3:31 - 3:34
Right now, we're already in front of the stage.
  • 3:35 - 3:37
We're about to see Khon Klang Plaeng.
  • 3:37 - 3:40
But first, let's get to know how many types of Khon there are
  • 3:40 - 3:42
and how Khon Klang Plaeng is different from other types of Khon.
  • 3:42 - 3:44
    Let's go!
  • 3:44 - 3:47
It's quiet inappropriate to do the explanation in the venue.
  • 3:47 - 3:49
We should be mindful of the performers
  • 3:49 - 3:51
because they are on the stage. We can't just talk all the time.
  • 3:51 - 3:53
And it also disturbs the others.
  • 3:53 - 3:55
So, it's best to do this outside.
  • 3:55 - 3:58
We all know that Khon is a dance-drama performance
  • 3:58 - 4:00
of which performers are wearing masks
  • 4:00 - 4:03
and dancing rhythmically with the music, right?
  • 4:03 - 4:06
But, actually, there are many types of Khon.
  • 4:06 - 4:08
    There's more than one.
  • 4:08 - 4:10
I understand that we see Khon as
  • 4:10 - 4:13
a performance on stage, something like that, right?
  • 4:13 - 4:16
But, in fact, there are 5 types of Khon.
  • 4:16 - 4:19
The first one is Khon Rong Nai --
  • 4:19 - 4:22
    what we're most familiar with
  • 4:22 - 4:25
since Fine Arts Department of Thailand often host Khon Rong Nai performance.
  • 4:25 - 4:30
Khon Rong Nai is a combination between Lakhon Nai and Khon.
  • 4:30 - 4:31
    Apart from Khon movement,
  • 4:31 - 4:32
    Khon narration and dialogue,
  • 4:32 - 4:35
    there's also Thai traditional dancing.
  • 4:35 - 4:39
And it also features 2 Pi Phat orchestras.
  • 4:39 - 4:41
During these days, most of Khon performances by the Fine Arts Department,
  • 4:41 - 4:44
    whether performed indoor or outdoor,
  • 4:44 - 4:48
are always of Khon Rong Nai style, because it is spectacular.
  • 4:48 - 4:49
    There's traditional dancing, graceful movements.
  • 4:49 - 4:52
And since there's Khon Rong Nai, there's also, of course
  • 4:52 - 4:53
    Khon Rong Nok.
  • 4:53 - 4:56
There's a slight difference between Khon Rong Nai and Khon Rong Nok.
  • 4:56 - 4:59
Khon Rong Nok's setting isn't as precise as Khon Rong Nai's.
  • 4:59 - 5:01
    There's no proper setting.
  • 5:01 - 5:03
It's set on common stage or platform
  • 5:03 - 5:06
with bamboo rails set along its length.
  • 5:06 - 5:07
    Imagine the stage...
  • 5:07 - 5:10
with bamboo rails laid from one side to the other.
  • 5:10 - 5:12
    Normally, while watching Khon,
  • 5:12 - 5:16
we'll see a seat, some sort of thing like a bench...
  • 5:16 - 5:17
    looking like a throne.
  • 5:17 - 5:19
Khon Rong Nok doesn't have these things on stage.
  • 5:19 - 5:23
They'll be using the rails as the throne.
  • 5:23 - 5:26
That's why this type of Khon is also called --
  • 5:26 - 5:27
    Khon Nang Rao.
  • 5:28 - 5:31
Next, we have Khon Na Cho.
  • 5:31 - 5:34
Khon Na Cho is developed out of Thai shadow play or Nang Yai.
  • 5:34 - 5:37
Everyone might already know Nang Yai.
  • 5:37 - 5:39
The performers first put up the backdrop, right?
  • 5:39 - 5:42
Then they'll hold up the carved buffalo-skinned puppets
  • 5:42 - 5:44
and let the backdrop reflects the shadow.
  • 5:44 - 5:44
And there are also performers dancing.
  • 5:44 - 5:47
But, at that time, playing only with shadows became boring.
  • 5:47 - 5:51
That's why sometimes they incorporated Khon into Nang Yai performance.
  • 5:51 - 5:54
Like, while the puppet was being held up, a person walked out from behind.
  • 5:54 - 5:55
Bam, a performer in Khon costume appeared.
  • 5:55 - 5:57
    But after a while,
  • 5:57 - 6:01
people felt that Khon performing is more exciting than Nang Yai's.
  • 6:01 - 6:06
It led to having Khon performances in front of the same backdrop.
  • 6:06 - 6:07
    The puppets were removed.
  • 6:07 - 6:10
So, that is another type of Khon.
  • 6:10 - 6:12
And the fourth type of Khon --
  • 6:12 - 6:14
    is the most developed one.
  • 6:14 - 6:15
    It's called Khon Chak.
  • 6:15 - 6:18
Khon Chak emerged during the reign of King Rama V.
  • 6:18 - 6:20
There was first the opera-oriented dance drama --
  • 6:20 - 6:22
which is plays with proper stage and scripts...
  • 6:22 - 6:23
    this and that...
  • 6:23 - 6:25
and there was also chants and dance.
  • 6:25 - 6:28
This kind of play inspired the adaptation of Khon.
  • 6:28 - 6:31
This is how Khon Chak emerged.
  • 6:31 - 6:35
But Khon Chak is slightly different from regular Khon.
  • 6:35 - 6:38
I mean, it requires separating the performance into independent plays.
  • 6:38 - 6:40
    There couldn't be reversions
  • 6:40 - 6:42
    , unlike Ramakien epic tales
  • 6:42 - 6:46
which were written specifically for traditional Khon performance.
  • 6:46 - 6:48
This one is more like a modern play.
  • 6:48 - 6:51
That's why they need to divide the stories into parts,
  • 6:51 - 6:53
each written particularly for Khon Chak.
  • 6:53 - 6:54
    And the last type --
  • 6:54 - 6:56
which is in fact considered the oldest form --
  • 6:56 - 6:59
is the one we're getting to see today!
  • 6:59 - 7:01
    Khong Klang Plaeng it is.
  • 7:01 - 7:06
Khon Klang Plaeng is performed outdoor, in an open-air space.
  • 7:06 - 7:08
    No backdrop, nothing.
  • 7:08 - 7:10
    Just the natural surrounding.
  • 7:10 - 7:14
Battle scenes are often depicted in Khon Klang Plaeng performance.
  • 7:14 - 7:17
Or it could be any scene which two camps are fighting.
  • 7:17 - 7:20
It's very convenient since they are performing in open space.
  • 7:20 - 7:23
So, I believe we know now what Khon Klang Plaeng is.
  • 7:23 - 7:25
    Let's go see the performance.
  • 7:27 - 7:29
    It's just started.
  • 7:29 - 7:34
I need to tell you guys that Khon performance always begins with a prelude.
  • 7:34 - 7:37
Let's watch this from the prelude to the main piece
  • 7:37 - 7:39
    and the last set.
  • 7:41 - 7:42
  • 7:42 - 7:43
  • 7:44 - 7:45
  • 7:46 - 7:48
    For today,
  • 7:48 - 7:50
the performance is divided into 3 parts.
  • 7:50 - 7:53
    The first is the prelude,
  • 7:53 - 7:57
    which is Dhep Singhawatarn.
  • 7:57 - 8:02
It is newly and specifically composed for this show.
  • 8:02 - 8:06
And the second is the main piece --
  • 8:06 - 8:08
    Intarachit War.
  • 8:08 - 8:12
The scene is about the fight between Intarachit and Phra Lak.
  • 8:12 - 8:14
Of course, Intarachit had no chance winning Phra Lak
  • 8:14 - 8:17
because he was very good at fighting.
  • 8:17 - 8:18
    When Intarachit found himself losing,
  • 8:18 - 8:21
he took out his most nefarious weapon --
  • 8:21 - 8:24
    the Nagapasha arrow.
  • 8:24 - 8:28
Nagapasha arrow would let out countless Nagas when shooted.
  • 8:28 - 8:31
You guys can see from this
  • 8:31 - 8:34
that Phra Lak loses his consciousness when hit with the arrow.
  • 8:34 - 8:36
But Phra Ram saved him at last
  • 8:37 - 8:40
by shooting an arrow calling the Garuda to help.
  • 8:40 - 8:42
The Garuda chased the Nagas away.
  • 8:42 - 8:46
Garuda is actually an all-time enemy of Naga.
  • 8:46 - 8:47
because it eats Naga as food.
  • 8:47 - 8:49
I've told you guys this before.
  • 8:49 - 8:51
    And for the last set,
  • 8:51 - 8:57
they performed a dance piece for blessing King Rama X.
  • 8:57 - 9:00
We can see that Khon performance is a high art form of performance.
  • 9:00 - 9:02
    In each performance,
  • 9:02 - 9:10
we get to see the union of art forms and great artists just for one show.
  • 9:10 - 9:12
    Beginning with costume designs
  • 9:12 - 9:15
    which also requires complicated embroidery.
  • 9:15 - 9:17
The orchestras also need to be Pi Phat orchestra.
  • 9:17 - 9:20
And the song or music needs to reflect the story, too.
  • 9:20 - 9:22
    The performers themselves, --
  • 9:22 - 9:32
although they don't speak, their movements communicate particular meanings or emotions.
  • 9:32 - 9:35
For example, certain movements suggest that they're angry,
  • 9:35 - 9:37
    some suggest that they're shy.
  • 9:37 - 9:38
If one has some knowledge of Khon,
  • 9:38 - 9:43
it's not that hard to understand what the characters are saying through their movements
  • 9:43 - 9:45
    even without the narration.
  • 9:45 - 9:47
    For literary aspects,
  • 9:47 - 9:53
the beauty of literature is reflected in Khon narration and dialogues
  • 9:53 - 9:56
    which plays with words aesthetically.
  • 9:56 - 9:58
Most importantly, the performance we just saw today
  • 9:58 - 10:02
owes its perfection to the artists from Wang-Na
  • 10:02 - 10:08
who study the art of Khon, theatre, musical performance and Thai vocal music
  • 10:08 - 10:10
at the College of Dramatic Arts
  • 10:10 - 10:13
which is located in the area of the Front Palace (Wang-Na).
  • 10:13 - 10:18
Wang-Na used to be the residence of the Uparaja of Siam in each period.
  • 10:18 - 10:23
Pinklao, the brother of King Rama IV, used to live in the palace of which the area has become the location of the College of Dramatic Arts.
  • 10:23 - 10:29
Apart from this, the performers also include staffs or former staffs of the college,
  • 10:29 - 10:30
    Bunditpatanasilpa Institute,
  • 10:30 - 10:34
or the Office of Performing Arts.
  • 10:34 - 10:38
They are truly expertise and it's such an honor to witness their talent through this show.
  • 10:38 - 10:40
    A high art form, indeed.
  • 10:40 - 10:42
So, we've finished seeing Khon performance.
  • 10:42 - 10:44
How was it? Did you guys have fun?
  • 10:44 - 10:46
This might be a relatively new perspective on Khon performance
  • 10:46 - 10:51
because Khon Klang Plaeng is different from common Khon performance we've seen.
  • 10:51 - 10:54
    If anyone has comments,
  • 10:54 - 10:55
or if I said anything incorrect,
  • 10:55 - 10:57
also, if you guys spot any special characteristics of any Khon character,
  • 10:57 - 10:59
please feel free to comment down below.
  • 11:00 - 11:02
And for those I met at the festival,
  • 11:02 - 11:04
don't forget to tag me in our photos.
  • 11:04 - 11:07
If you like this video, please give it a thumbs up
  • 11:07 - 11:09
and don't forget to click share, so your friends can see this too.
  • 11:09 - 11:11
Well then, see you next time!
  • 11:11 - 11:13
    Bye-bye, Sa-wad-dee-ka.
