8 Things Resilient People Do

  • 0:01 - 0:02
    - [Woman] Hello Psych2Goers,
  • 0:02 - 0:04
and welcome back to another video.
  • 0:04 - 0:07
    Your support helps us make
    mental health and psychology,
  • 0:07 - 0:09
    more accessible to everyone.
  • 0:09 - 0:12
And we wanted to thank you for
all the love you've given us.
  • 0:12 - 0:14
    Now, back to the video.
  • 0:14 - 0:16
    What is resilience?
  • 0:16 - 0:19
    Resilience means you're
    able to withstand or recover
  • 0:19 - 0:21
from difficult situations in your life.
  • 0:21 - 0:23
It can help us deal with heartbreak,
  • 0:23 - 0:25
    failure, and life stressors.
  • 0:25 - 0:27
    When we build our resilience,
  • 0:27 - 0:30
    we're able to better recover
    from hardships and setbacks
  • 0:30 - 0:31
    in a more healthy way.
  • 0:31 - 0:34
    Resilience might be something
    you're searching for,
  • 0:34 - 0:37
    especially now, between
    dealing with a pandemic
  • 0:37 - 0:40
    and trying to return to
    some semblance of normalcy.
  • 0:40 - 0:42
    Staying resilient in
    these trying times is key
  • 0:42 - 0:45
    in keeping up with your
    mental and physical health.
  • 0:45 - 0:49
With that said, these are eight
    things resilient people do.
  • 0:49 - 0:52
One, you stay flexible and open-minded.
  • 0:52 - 0:55
Do you often stay open to new ideas,
  • 0:55 - 0:57
    opportunities, and solutions?
  • 0:57 - 0:59
    Resilience is all about
    trying to make the best
  • 0:59 - 1:01
out of what may seem like the worst.
  • 1:01 - 1:04
    When you're resilient, you
    don't have a one-track mind.
  • 1:04 - 1:07
You give yourself the time and opportunity
  • 1:07 - 1:10
    to think everything out
    before jumping to a conclusion
  • 1:10 - 1:13
    or fretting over worst-case scenarios.
  • 1:13 - 1:16
Two, you practice patience and kindness.
  • 1:16 - 1:18
    Whether it's in the
    workplace or with friends,
  • 1:18 - 1:20
    you're known for showing patience
  • 1:20 - 1:22
    and kindness towards others.
  • 1:22 - 1:25
    This includes being kind to
    yourself when you mess up.
  • 1:25 - 1:27
Being kind and patient with yourself
  • 1:27 - 1:30
    is just as important as
    it is with other people.
  • 1:30 - 1:33
    Three, you're generally optimistic.
  • 1:33 - 1:34
    When something bad happens
  • 1:34 - 1:37
are you able to look at the big picture?
  • 1:37 - 1:40
    You don't let one bad
    slip-up ruin your whole day.
  • 1:40 - 1:42
And know not to fixate on the bad things.
  • 1:42 - 1:44
You focus on what you're grateful for,
  • 1:44 - 1:47
    like your friends,
    family, and possessions,
  • 1:47 - 1:49
instead of looking for the negatives.
  • 1:49 - 1:51
    This optimistic mindset,
  • 1:51 - 1:53
isn't only a key part of being resilient,
  • 1:53 - 1:56
    but it can also help
    make you happier overall.
  • 1:56 - 1:59
Four, you live in the present.
  • 1:59 - 2:01
It's easy to fall into spiraling thoughts
  • 2:01 - 2:03
of your regrets and past mistakes,
  • 2:03 - 2:05
    wondering what might've been,
  • 2:05 - 2:06
    but dwelling on your mistakes
  • 2:06 - 2:08
won't change anything about your past.
  • 2:08 - 2:12
    Moving on and learning from
    your mistakes takes resilience.
  • 2:12 - 2:13
    When you're resilient,
  • 2:13 - 2:15
    you learn how to accept
    what happened to you
  • 2:15 - 2:18
    and focus on what you
    can do in the present.
  • 2:18 - 2:22
    Five, you value and
    build good relationships.
  • 2:22 - 2:24
Do you take the extra time needed
  • 2:24 - 2:25
    to build those strong relationships
  • 2:25 - 2:28
with the important people in your lives.
  • 2:28 - 2:30
Having a support system is very important.
  • 2:30 - 2:33
    Friends and family are
    the ones who are there
  • 2:33 - 2:34
    to celebrate your highs
  • 2:34 - 2:37
and a shoulder to cry on during your lows.
  • 2:37 - 2:38
    As someone who is resilient,
  • 2:38 - 2:41
    you know that once you've
    built a strong support system,
  • 2:41 - 2:43
    then you're set for life.
  • 2:43 - 2:46
Six, you know and consider your limits.
  • 2:46 - 2:48
Are you aware when you need help,
  • 2:48 - 2:51
or do you burn yourself out unnecessarily?
  • 2:51 - 2:52
    No one is perfect,
  • 2:52 - 2:55
    and no one can do
    everything by themselves.
  • 2:55 - 2:58
Everyone has blind spots and weaknesses.
  • 2:58 - 3:01
This is why you know when to
    confide in your trusted peers
  • 3:01 - 3:05
or when to take a break, and
    how to practice good self-care.
  • 3:05 - 3:09
Seven, you know how to handle rejection.
  • 3:09 - 3:12
    Rejection in any form
    can be hard to swallow.
  • 3:12 - 3:14
    Maybe you didn't get the
    job you really wanted,
  • 3:14 - 3:17
    or you're crush doesn't like
you back in the same way.
  • 3:17 - 3:19
Do you take these things very personally
  • 3:19 - 3:21
and think you're not good enough?
  • 3:21 - 3:23
    Or do you recognize instead
  • 3:23 - 3:25
that there are other factors involved
  • 3:25 - 3:26
    in making these decisions,
  • 3:26 - 3:28
    like other more qualified applicants
  • 3:28 - 3:30
    or another person's feelings?
  • 3:30 - 3:32
    As someone who is resilient,
  • 3:32 - 3:35
you try not to let rejection
    get the best of you
  • 3:35 - 3:36
    and decide to move forward
  • 3:36 - 3:40
instead of letting any kind of
    self-loathing hold you back.
  • 3:40 - 3:43
Eight, you like spending time alone.
  • 3:43 - 3:44
Do you like to take time alone
  • 3:44 - 3:49
    to process things, reflect, or
get to know your inner self?
  • 3:49 - 3:51
When you spend time alone to
    think through your troubles,
  • 3:51 - 3:53
it can help you sort out your feelings
  • 3:53 - 3:55
and any possible actions you can take.
  • 3:55 - 3:58
    Reflecting upon things
    and growing from them
  • 3:58 - 4:00
are some of the best ways you can learn.
  • 4:00 - 4:02
Who knows, you might learn new things
  • 4:02 - 4:05
    about your inner self
    you never expected to.
  • 4:06 - 4:08
    Whether you're still working
    on building your resilience
  • 4:08 - 4:12
or you already are a resilient
    person, every bit counts.
  • 4:12 - 4:14
Do you relate to any of these things
  • 4:14 - 4:16
    mentioned in this video?
