Own your body's data

  • Not Synced
As a kid I've always loved information
  • Not Synced
that I could get from data
  • Not Synced
and the stories that could be told with numbers
  • Not Synced
I remember growing up I'd be frustrated on
  • Not Synced
how my own parents would lie to me
  • Not Synced
    using numbers you know.
  • Not Synced
[?] "I've told you once I've told you a thousand times."
  • Not Synced
No dad, you've only told me 17 times and twice it wasn't my fault.
  • Not Synced
I think that's one of the reasons I got a PhD in statistics.
  • Not Synced
You know I always wanted to know,
  • Not Synced
what are people trying to hide with numbers?
  • Not Synced
As a statistician, I want people to show me the data
  • Not Synced
so I can decide for myself.
  • Not Synced
Donald and I were pregnant with our third child
  • Not Synced
and we were at about 41 and a half weeks,
  • Not Synced
what some of you may refer to as been overdue.
  • Not Synced
Statisticians we call that being within the 95% confidence interval. [Laughter]
  • Not Synced
And, at this point in the process
  • Not Synced
we had to come in every couple of days
  • Not Synced
to do a stress test on the baby, and this is just routine,
  • Not Synced
it tests whether the baby is feeling any type of undo stress.
  • Not Synced
And you are rarely, if ever, seen by your actual Doctor,
  • Not Synced
just whoever happens to be working at the hospital that day.
  • Not Synced
So we go in for a stress test and after 20 minutes
  • Not Synced
the Doctor comes out and he says,
  • Not Synced
"your baby is on distress, we need to induce you".
  • Not Synced
Now, as a statistician, what's my response?
  • Not Synced
    Show me the data!
  • Not Synced
So he proceeds to tell us the baby's heart rate trace went from 18 minutes,
  • Not Synced
the baby's heart rate was on the normal zone
  • Not Synced
and for 2 minutes it was in what appeared to be
  • Not Synced
my heart rate zone and I said,
  • Not Synced
"well, is it possible that maybe this was my heart rate"?
  • Not Synced
You know, I was moving around a little bit...
  • Not Synced
it's hard to lay still on your back,
  • Not Synced
41 weeks pregnant for 20 minutes...
  • Not Synced
you know, maybe it was shifting around.
  • Not Synced
He said "well... we don't want to take any chances".
  • Not Synced
I said okay..."what if I was at 36 weeks with the same data,
  • Not Synced
would you decision be to induce"?
  • Not Synced
Well, no, no I would wait until you were at least 38 weeks
  • Not Synced
but you are almost 42, there is no reason to leave
  • Not Synced
that baby inside let's get you a room.
  • Not Synced
    I said... well...
  • Not Synced
why don't we just do it again?
  • Not Synced
We can collect more data, I can try to be really still for 20 minutes,
  • Not Synced
we can sort of average the two and see .... you know, what that means ... (laughter)
  • Not Synced
    and.. he goes,
  • Not Synced
"Ma'm,I just don't want you to have a miscarriage".
  • Not Synced
    That makes 3 of us.
  • Not Synced
And he says, "your chances of having a miscarriage double
  • Not Synced
when you go past your due date, let's get you a room".
  • Not Synced
Wow. So now as a statistician, what's my response?
  • Not Synced
    Show me the data!
  • Not Synced
    Dude you're talking chances,
  • Not Synced
I do chances all day long, tell me all about chances.
  • Not Synced
    Let's talk chances. (Laugher)
  • Not Synced
    Let's talk chances.
  • Not Synced
So I say, ok, do I go from like a 30% chance to a 60% chance?
  • Not Synced
Like, where are we here with this miscarriage thing?
  • Not Synced
And he goes..."not quite but it doubles
  • Not Synced
and we really just want what's best for the baby".
  • Not Synced
Undaunted, I try a different angle.
  • Not Synced
I say ok out of 1000 full term pregnant woman,
  • Not Synced
how many of them are going to miscarry
  • Not Synced
    just before their due date?
  • Not Synced
And then he looks at me, and looks at Donald then he goes,
  • Not Synced
    "about 1 in a thousand".
  • Not Synced
I said Ok, Ok, and so of those thousand women,
  • Not Synced
how many are going to miscarry
  • Not Synced
just after their due date? ..."About two".
  • Not Synced
I said ok, so you are telling me that my chances
  • Not Synced
    go from 0.1% chance
  • Not Synced
    to a 0.2% chance.
  • Not Synced
Ok, so at this ppoint the data is not convincing us
  • Not Synced
that we need to be induced
  • Not Synced
and so then we need to have a conversation
  • Not Synced
about how inductions leads to a higher rate
  • Not Synced
of cesarean sections and if at all possible we'd like to avoid that.
  • Not Synced
And then I said, you know,
  • Not Synced
and I really don't think my due date is accurate. (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
And so this really stunned him
  • Not Synced
and he looks sort of puzzled
  • Not Synced
and I said, well you may not know this
  • Not Synced
but pregnancy due dates are calculated
  • Not Synced
assuming that you have a standard 28 cycle
  • Not Synced
and my cycle ranges, sometimes it's 27
  • Not Synced
    sometimes is up to 38,
  • Not Synced
and I have been collecting the data to prove it.
  • Not Synced
And so we ended up leaving the hospital that day
  • Not Synced
    without being induced,
  • Not Synced
we actually had to sign a waiver to walk out of the hospital.
  • Not Synced
And I'm not advocating that you not listen to your Doctors,
  • Not Synced
because even with our first child
  • Not Synced
we were induced at 38 weeks, cervical fluid was low,
  • Not Synced
    I'm not anti-medical intervention.
  • Not Synced
But why we were confident to leave that day?
  • Not Synced
We had data that told a different story.
  • Not Synced
We had been collecting data for 6 years.
  • Not Synced
    I had this temperature data,
  • Not Synced
and it told a different story.
  • Not Synced
In fact, we could probably pretty accurately estimate conception.
  • Not Synced
Yeah, that's a story you want to tell
  • Not Synced
    at your kid's wedding reception...
  • Not Synced
I remember like it was yesterday ... (Laugher)...
  • Not Synced
my temperature was a sizzling 97.8 degrees
  • Not Synced
as I stared into your father's eyes, oh yeah, (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
22 more years we're telling that story.
  • Not Synced
But we were confident to leave because
  • Not Synced
    we had been collecting data.
  • Not Synced
Now what does that data look like?
  • Not Synced
    Here's a standard chart
  • Not Synced
of a woman's waking body temperature
  • Not Synced
during the course of a cycle.
  • Not Synced
So from the beginning of the menstrual cycle
  • Not Synced
until the beginning of the next.
  • Not Synced
You'll see that the temperature is not random.
  • Not Synced
Right, there clearly there is a low pattern
  • Not Synced
at the beginning of her cycle
  • Not Synced
and then you see this jump and then a higher
  • Not Synced
set of temperatures at the end of her cycle.
  • Not Synced
    So what's happening here?
  • Not Synced
What is that data telling you?
  • Not Synced
Well ladies, at the beginning of our cycle,
  • Not Synced
the hormone estrogen is dominant and that estrogen
  • Not Synced
causes a suppression of your body temperature.
  • Not Synced
And at ovulation, your body releases an egg
  • Not Synced
    and progesterone takes over, pro-gestation.
  • Not Synced
And so your body heats up in anticipation
  • Not Synced
of housing this new little fertilized egg.
  • Not Synced
    So why this temperature jump?
  • Not Synced
Well, think about when a bird sits on her eggs...
  • Not Synced
why is she sitting on them?
  • Not Synced
She wants to keep them warm,
  • Not Synced
protect them and keep them warm.
  • Not Synced
Ladies, this is exactly what our bodies do every month,
  • Not Synced
    they heat up in anticipation
  • Not Synced
of keeping a new little life form.
  • Not Synced
And if nothing happens, if you are not pregnant,
  • Not Synced
then estrogen takes back over and that cycle starts all over again.
  • Not Synced
But if you do get pregnant, sometime you
  • Not Synced
actually see another shift in your temperatures
  • Not Synced
and it stays elevated for those whole 9 months,
  • Not Synced
that's why you see those pregnant woman
  • Not Synced
    just sweating and hot,
  • Not Synced
    because their temperatures are high.
  • Not Synced
Here is a chart that we had about 3 or 4 years ago
  • Not Synced
we were really very excited about this chart,
  • Not Synced
you'll se the low temperature level
  • Not Synced
and then a shift and for about 5 days,
  • Not Synced
that's about the time it takes for the egg to travel
  • Not Synced
down the fallopian tube and implant,
  • Not Synced
and then you see those temperature charts go up a little bit.
  • Not Synced
And in fact, we had a second temperature shift
  • Not Synced
confirmed with a pregnancy test that were indeed pregnant
  • Not Synced
with our fist child, very exciting.
  • Not Synced
Until a couple of days later
  • Not Synced
I saw some spotting and then I noticed heavy blood flow,
  • Not Synced
and we had in fact had an early stage miscarriage.
  • Not Synced
Had I not been taking my temperature
  • Not Synced
I really just thought my period was late that month.
  • Not Synced
But we actually had data to show
  • Not Synced
that we had miscarried this baby,
  • Not Synced
and even though this data revealed a really
  • Not Synced
    unfortunate event in our lives,
  • Not Synced
it was information that we can then take to our doctor.
  • Not Synced
So if there was a fertility issue or some problem
  • Not Synced
    I had data to show,
  • Not Synced
we got pregnant, our temperature shifted,
  • Not Synced
    we somehow lost this baby...
  • Not Synced
what is it that we can do to help prevent this problem?
  • Not Synced
And it's not just about temperatures
  • Not Synced
and it is not just about fertility,
  • Not Synced
we can use data about our bodies to tell us a lot of things.
  • Not Synced
For instance, did you know that taking your
  • Not Synced
temperature can tell you a lot
  • Not Synced
about the condition of your thyroid?
  • Not Synced
So your thyroid works a lot like the thermostat in your house.
  • Not Synced
There is an optimal temperature that you want in your house,
  • Not Synced
    you set your thermostat,
  • Not Synced
when it gets too cold in the house your thermostat kicks in
  • Not Synced
and says, "hey we need to blow some heat around",
  • Not Synced
or if it gets too hot your thermostat
  • Not Synced
sort of registers turn the AC on, cool us off
  • Not Synced
that's exactly how your thyroid works in your body.
  • Not Synced
Your thyroid tries to keep an optimal temperature
  • Not Synced
    for your body.
  • Not Synced
If it get too cold your thyroid says we need to heat up,
  • Not Synced
if it gets too hot, your thyroid cools you down.
  • Not Synced
But what happens when your thyroid is not functioning well?
  • Not Synced
But when it doesn't function then it shows up
  • Not Synced
    in your body temperatures,
  • Not Synced
they tend to be lower than normal and very erratic.
  • Not Synced
    So by collecting this data
  • Not Synced
you can find out information about your thyroid.
  • Not Synced
Now, what is it, if you had a thyroid problem and you went to the doctor,
  • Not Synced
your doctor would actually test the amount of
  • Not Synced
thyroid stimulating hormone in your blood.
  • Not Synced
But the problem with that test is
  • Not Synced
it doesn't tell you how active the hormone is in your body.
  • Not Synced
So you may have a lot of hormone present
  • Not Synced
but it might not be actively working to regulate
  • Not Synced
    your body temperature.
  • Not Synced
So just by collecting your temperature every day
  • Not Synced
you get information about the condition of your thyroid.
  • Not Synced
So what if you don't want to take your temperature every day?
  • Not Synced
    I advocate that you do
  • Not Synced
but there's tons of other things you can take.
  • Not Synced
You can take your blood pressure, you can take your weight...
  • Not Synced
    yeah, who's excited about
  • Not Synced
taking your weight every day. (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
Early on in our marriage Donald had a stuffy nose
  • Not Synced
and he had been taking a slu of medications
  • Not Synced
to try to relieve his stuffy nose to no avail.
  • Not Synced
And so that night he comes and he wakes me up and he says
  • Not Synced
"honey, I can't breath out of my nose".
  • Not Synced
And I sort of roll over and I look, and I said, well can you breath out of your mouth?
  • Not Synced
And he goes, "yes, but I cant breath out of my nose"!
  • Not Synced
And so like any good wife, I rushed him
  • Not Synced
    to the emergency room
  • Not Synced
at 2 o'clock in the morning.
  • Not Synced
And the whole time I'm driving and I'm thinking
  • Not Synced
you can't die on my now. (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    We just got married
  • Not Synced
people would think I killed you!
  • Not Synced
And so, we get to the ER and the nurse sees us
  • Not Synced
and he can't breath out of his nose and so
  • Not Synced
she brings us to the back and the doctor say,
  • Not Synced
what seems to be the problem and he goes,
  • Not Synced
" I can't breath out of my nose".
  • Not Synced
And he said, you can't breath out of your nose? "No"...
  • Not Synced
but he can breath out of his mouth...(laughter)
  • Not Synced
OK, he takes a step back and looks at both of us
  • Not Synced
and he says sir, I think I know the problem,
  • Not Synced
    you're having a heart attack,
  • Not Synced
I'm going to order an EKG and a CAT scan
  • Not Synced
    for you immediately.
  • Not Synced
    And we are thinking,
  • Not Synced
no no no, it's not a heart attack he can breathe
  • Not Synced
just out of his mouth...no, no, no,
  • Not Synced
and so we go back and forth with this doctor
  • Not Synced
because we think it is the incorrect diagnosis
  • Not Synced
and he's like no really, it'll be fine, just calm down.
  • Not Synced
And I'm thinking, how do you calm down... I don't think he's having a heart attack.
  • Not Synced
Fortunately for us, this doctor was at the end of the shift.
  • Not Synced
This new doctor comes in he sees us clearly
  • Not Synced
distrust with a husband who can't breath
  • Not Synced
    out of his nose.
  • Not Synced
    He starts asking us questions.
  • Not Synced
He says well, do you two exercise?
  • Not Synced
We ride our bikes, we go to the gym... occasionally. (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
We move around. And he says, what were you doing
  • Not Synced
    just before you came here?
  • Not Synced
I'm thinking, I was sleeping, honestly,
  • Not Synced
But OK, so Donald goes into the slu of medications
  • Not Synced
he was taking and he lists,
  • Not Synced
"I took this decongestant, and then I took this nasal spray"...
  • Not Synced
and then all of a sudden the light bulb goes off
  • Not Synced
and he says, "oh, you should never mix
  • Not Synced
this decongestant with this nasal spray
  • Not Synced
    clogs you up every time.
  • Not Synced
Here, take this one instead", gives us a prescription
  • Not Synced
We're looking at each other and I looked at the doctor
  • Not Synced
and I said why is it that it seems you
  • Not Synced
were able to accurately diagnose his condition
  • Not Synced
but this previous doctor wanted to order
  • Not Synced
an EKG and a CAT scan?
  • Not Synced
And he looks at us and says,
  • Not Synced
when a 350 pound man walks in the ER
  • Not Synced
    and says he can't breath,
  • Not Synced
you assume he's having a heart attack
  • Not Synced
    and you ask questions later".
  • Not Synced
ER doctors are trained to make decisions quickly,
  • Not Synced
    but not always accurately.
  • Not Synced
And so had we had some information
  • Not Synced
about our heart health to share with him
  • Not Synced
maybe we would have gotten a better diagnosis
  • Not Synced
    the first time.
  • Not Synced
I want you to consider the following chart,
  • Not Synced
    of systolic blood pressure measurements
  • Not Synced
from October 2010 to July 2012.
  • Not Synced
You'll see that these measurements start
  • Not Synced
    in the prehypertension/Hypertension zone,
  • Not Synced
but over about the course of a year and a half
  • Not Synced
they move into the normal zone.
  • Not Synced
This is about the hear rate of a healthy 16 year old.
  • Not Synced
What story is this data telling you?
  • Not Synced
Obviously is the data from someone
  • Not Synced
    who's made a drastic transformation
  • Not Synced
and fortunately for us, that person happens to be here today.
  • Not Synced
So that 350 pound guy that walked into the ER with me
  • Not Synced
is now an even sexier and healthier
  • Not Synced
225 pound guy, and that's his blood pressure trace.
  • Not Synced
Over the course of that year and a half
  • Not Synced
    Donald's eating changed
  • Not Synced
and his exercise regimen changed and
  • Not Synced
    his heart rate responded,
  • Not Synced
his blood pressure responded to that change
  • Not Synced
that he made in his body.
  • Not Synced
    What's the take home message
  • Not Synced
that I want you to leave with today?
  • Not Synced
By taking ownership of your data just like we've done,
  • Not Synced
just by taking this daily measurements about yourself,
  • Not Synced
you become the expert of your body,
  • Not Synced
    you become the authority.
  • Not Synced
    It's not hard to do.
  • Not Synced
You don't have to have a PhD in statistics
  • Not Synced
to be an expert in yourself.
  • Not Synced
You don't have to have a medical degree
  • Not Synced
    to be your body's expert.
  • Not Synced
Medical doctors, they're experts on the population,
  • Not Synced
but you are the expert on yourself.
  • Not Synced
And so when the two of you come together,
  • Not Synced
    when two experts come together
  • Not Synced
the two of you are able to make a better decision
  • Not Synced
    than just your doctor alone.
  • Not Synced
Now that you understand the power of information
  • Not Synced
that you can get through personal data collection,
  • Not Synced
I'd like you all to stand and raise your right hand.
  • Not Synced
    Yes, get it up.
  • Not Synced
I challenge you to take ownership of your data
  • Not Synced
and today, I hereby confer upon you
  • Not Synced
a TEDx associate's degree in elementary statistics
  • Not Synced
with a concentration in time dependent data analysis
  • Not Synced
with all the rights and privileges adverteining there to
  • Not Synced
and the next time you are in your doctor's office.
  • Not Synced
    As newly inducted statisticians,
  • Not Synced
what should always be your response?
  • Not Synced
Show me the data! I can't hear you...
  • Not Synced
Show me the data! One more time...
  • Not Synced
    Show me the data!
  • Not Synced
    Show me the data.
  • Not Synced
    Thank you.
