0:28 - 0:34I know that, because in 1986,
when the US Surgeon General told us, -
0:34 - 0:36what did we do?
-
0:36 - 0:38We waged massive campaigns.
-
0:38 - 0:42We started labeling packages
saying, "It kills." -
0:42 - 0:48We also started public campaigns,
so the kids would know. -
0:48 - 0:51And what happened
is one day, they would tell you, -
0:51 - 0:55"Mom, if you don't stop smoking,
you're going to die." -
0:55 - 0:57Well, that's pretty dramatic.

0:57 - 1:00This is a public health emergency.
-
1:00 - 1:02And we have one today.
-
1:02 - 1:07It's all about secondary sugar,
and let me explain how it kills. -
1:09 - 1:11You all know primary sugar, right?
-
1:11 - 1:16Primary sugar: what I call that is
the one in your fruits, your vegetables, -
1:16 - 1:18the legumes, the nuts, the milk;
-
1:18 - 1:21it's the lactose,
this is all good for you. -
1:21 - 1:24The body knows
how to process that very well -
1:24 - 1:27with all the protein, the fiber,
and the vitamins that come with it. -
1:28 - 1:32What I call secondary sugar
- and I coined this term - -
1:32 - 1:38is the sugar that is hidden
and added to processed foods. -
1:39 - 1:41That's the one that's bad.

1:41 - 1:43First of all, it's hidden.
-
1:43 - 1:45Let's look at this for a second.
-
1:45 - 1:49It's hidden, because it's not
where you expect it, -
1:49 - 1:51in your beverages and your sweets.
-
1:51 - 1:56It's hidden, because half of what we eat
comes from those savory foods. -
1:56 - 1:58Savory? Yes!
-
1:58 - 2:00It's in your soup.
-
2:00 - 2:03Three teaspoons of sugar in that soup.
-
2:03 - 2:04It's in your crackers.
-
2:04 - 2:06There's six teaspoons.
-
2:06 - 2:08You may say,
"But, I only eat a few of those." -
2:08 - 2:10Yes, a serving size is five crackers.
-
2:10 - 2:12Do you know anybody
who eats five crackers? -
2:12 - 2:13(Laughter)
-
2:13 - 2:14Five chips?
-
2:14 - 2:16I don't. Right?
-
2:16 - 2:19They eat the whole sleeve.
That's teaspoons of sugar. -
2:19 - 2:20And it's everywhere.
-
2:21 - 2:22When I say everywhere,
-
2:22 - 2:25I mean in your bread,
in your pizza, in your burgers. -
2:25 - 2:27it's in your salad dressing,
-
2:27 - 2:30even in America's favorite hot sauce.
-
2:30 - 2:33You are reading these numbers correctly:
-
2:33 - 2:38there are 24 teaspoons
of sugar in that bottle. -
2:38 - 2:40Yes. The regular bottle.
-
2:40 - 2:43You may say, "Oh, but hold on.
I eat only a little." -
2:43 - 2:45Yes, but it adds up.
-
2:45 - 2:47And wait, this is not the worst.
-
2:47 - 2:49After working 20 years in the industry,
-
2:49 - 2:53I thought I had seen the best
and the ugliest of the industry. -
2:53 - 2:57No. A few weeks ago,
I found out even worse. -
2:57 - 2:59And that's what I want to share
with you today. -
2:59 - 3:04Now, let's put baby formula
in perspective here. -
3:04 - 3:09The best milk for the baby is obviously
the mother's milk, breast milk. -
3:09 - 3:11It does have sugar.
-
3:11 - 3:13Primary sugar in it.
-
3:13 - 3:16Seven percent of it is lactose,
and that's good! -
3:16 - 3:18Can't be better for the baby.
-
3:18 - 3:21But, in many communities,
in low-income communities, -
3:21 - 3:25they use this -- 50%
of the mothers don't breastfeed. -
3:25 - 3:28And, what's in this?
-
3:28 - 3:31Less lactose and a lot of sugar.
-
3:31 - 3:36When I say a lot of sugar, I mean
61 teaspoons of sugar is like this. -
3:37 - 3:40That's crazy. It's shocking.
-
3:40 - 3:44Now, it goes on as an addiction.
-
3:44 - 3:48And now a three-year old toddler
will get a little beverage like this. -
3:48 - 3:50Let me show the size of this bottle.
-
3:50 - 3:54It has six teaspoons of sugar,
just that little thing. -
3:54 - 3:59The marketing is deceiving;
because mothers will think, -
3:59 - 4:01"Oh, my kid will grow like a giraffe!"
-
4:01 - 4:03No, they don't! They grow like a hippo!
-
4:03 - 4:05(Laughter)
-
4:07 - 4:09What do we do next?
-
4:09 - 4:13We become young adults,
and now we're tricked by the diets. -
4:13 - 4:14Think about it for a second.
-
4:14 - 4:17You think about fat-free, right?
-
4:17 - 4:18No, it doesn't.
-
4:18 - 4:22Again, from knowing
in the industry, how it works, -
4:22 - 4:24when we remove the fat
from a product, it's tasteless, -
4:24 - 4:25so what do you do?
-
4:25 - 4:29You add sugar,
so that your favorite salad dressing, -
4:29 - 4:32that may already have sugar
and you don't know why, -
4:32 - 4:35becomes three times as much sugar.
-
4:35 - 4:37And, you'll try gluten-free,
-
4:37 - 4:38Well, no.
-
4:38 - 4:42I mean, if it's only
because it's a fad, think again. -
4:42 - 4:48Gluten-free will often have 30 to 40%
more sugar than your regular product. -
4:48 - 4:51So, you'll think, "Organic is good
for my baby! That's healthy!" -
4:51 - 4:52No, it isn't.
-
4:52 - 4:56The organic baby formula
is the worst offender. -
4:56 - 4:58That's the one that has
61 teaspoons of sugar. -
4:58 - 5:00That's almost half a pound.
-
5:00 - 5:01That's what I'm talking about.
-
5:01 - 5:05In that little box,
there's this much sugar. -
5:05 - 5:07So, what do we do about it?
-
5:07 - 5:10I mean, am I telling you
no sugar for anybody? -
5:10 - 5:11No.
-
5:11 - 5:14I would never say to kids,
"Stay away from sugar." -
5:14 - 5:18I'm from Paris. I know
when I need my sugar kick. -
5:18 - 5:21And, this is the eclair, right there.
-
5:21 - 5:23The chocolate eclair
is what I get for my sugar, -
5:23 - 5:25because I drink my coffee black.
-
5:25 - 5:27So, that's my sugar.
-
5:27 - 5:30But the one on the right
has just too much sugar. -
5:30 - 5:31They look the same.
-
5:31 - 5:35You look at these two little things,
and you say, "Oh. It's about the same." -
5:35 - 5:37Yes; 260 calories each.
-
5:37 - 5:40But the difference is
one is loaded with sugar. -
5:40 - 5:44And those nine teaspoons of sugar
are like a soda. -
5:44 - 5:46They create a sugar spike on your liver.
-
5:46 - 5:49Here's what I mean. Look what happens.
-
5:49 - 5:53The excess sugar
gets transformed into glycogen. -
5:53 - 5:56The glycogen is fat storage for later.
-
5:56 - 5:59So, the insulin does not bring it
to the muscles; -
5:59 - 6:01it says to the body,
"I'll come back for that." -
6:01 - 6:03Except if you do this
two or three times a day, -
6:03 - 6:05then it stays in your belly.
-
6:05 - 6:07And you can't get rid of it.
-
6:07 - 6:13We know there's a direct correlation now
between how much secondary sugar you take -
6:13 - 6:20and the higher incidence of heart disease,
type 2 diabetes, and obesity. -
6:20 - 6:23So, how are we going to
stop this addiction? -
6:23 - 6:25And I'm talking about an addiction here.

6:25 - 6:27Let me show you.
-
6:27 - 6:29This is a brain scan
you see on the image -
6:29 - 6:33of a normal individual.
-
6:33 - 6:36The red dots represent the dopamine.
-
6:36 - 6:38That's the reward.
-
6:38 - 6:42That's the "Ahhh!" when I bite the eclair.
-
6:42 - 6:45And I know I'm not going to have
two or three of those. -
6:45 - 6:48But what happens
with an addiction is this. -
6:48 - 6:52Do you see the difference
on this brain scan of a cocaine addict? -
6:52 - 6:54No red dots. No dopamine.
-
6:54 - 6:56The reward system is shut down.
-
6:56 - 6:58So I need more. More. More.
-
6:58 - 7:02And this is the brain scan
of an obese person. -
7:02 - 7:04I call this a sugar addiction.
-
7:04 - 7:07Same phenomenon. I'm craving it.
-
7:07 - 7:09Craving it to the point of 22 teaspoons,
-
7:09 - 7:1230 teaspoons per day for teens.
-
7:12 - 7:14How are we going to resolve this?
-
7:14 - 7:19How are we going to solve the crisis
of childhood obesity? -
7:19 - 7:21With a warning system.
-
7:21 - 7:22That's what I'm suggesting.
-
7:22 - 7:24We did it for tobacco,
-
7:24 - 7:27why can't we do it here
for all our foods -
7:27 - 7:29and have a warning
on the front of the package -
7:29 - 7:33in addition to all that great information
that nobody reads, right? -
7:33 - 7:36Seriously. A number of teaspoons.
-
7:36 - 7:42And, the entire package,
not for a ridiculous serving size. -
7:42 - 7:45Now, if the product
has no secondary sugar in it, -
7:45 - 7:47no added sugar whatsoever,
-
7:47 - 7:50we should tell it
and grant it a green label. -
7:50 - 7:52Kids will know the difference,
-
7:52 - 7:55so that when time comes
for the burger and the fries, -
7:55 - 7:57they will tell their mom and dad,
-
7:57 - 7:59"Dad, are you sure you want to get
-
7:59 - 8:03that 57-teaspoons-of-sugar bottle
for your fries? -
8:03 - 8:06I want a zero for mine!"

8:06 - 8:11That's what we can do. Together.
We can eradicate childhood obesity. -
8:11 - 8:14We, the people, need
to take this to the [Capitol] Hill. -
8:14 - 8:16Thank you.

Secondary sugar kills? Wait, secondary sugar is the one that’s hidden and added to foods you wouldn’t suspect, so kids and parents get addicted. A horrendous revelation here is that baby formula contains added sugar. Lots of it! And less lactose than breast milk. And no nutrition label requirement? You must be kidding, right?
Laurent is the Founder and Chairman of EChO – Eradicate Childhood Obesity Foundation, a not-for-profit organization with a mission to improve overall public health of children. Laurent is also a member of the Nutrition Round Table at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and President of Bon'App, a social enterprise that improves access to, and quality of, nutrition education.
