Creating yourself: adding color to your life | Dianna Martinez | TEDxBoyleHeights
-
0:05 - 0:08Hello everyone. How's everybody doing?
-
0:08 - 0:09(Audience) Good.
-
0:09 - 0:12Good. Well, here is my story.
-
0:12 - 0:16I am Dianna Martinez,
I am the daughter of two parents -
0:16 - 0:18who dared to cross to United States
-
0:18 - 0:21and have a better life
for them and for me. -
0:21 - 0:23I am part of Boyle Heights.
-
0:23 - 0:25And so my story begins
-
0:25 - 0:29when I was just a young girl
and my dad would tell me, -
0:29 - 0:34"You have to talk to people, tell them
what you think, your opinions." -
0:34 - 0:37And I remember, he would stand me
in front of him and ask, -
0:37 - 0:40"OK, present yourself, tell me
your name, where you're coming from -
0:40 - 0:42and who are your parents."
-
0:42 - 0:47Simple as that and I would start to cry,
because I couldn’t even say my name. -
0:47 - 0:49I would start crying and sobbing saying,
-
0:49 - 0:53"Do I really have to?
You know my name, don't you? -
0:54 - 0:59But it was just a stepping stone,
it was where it all started. -
0:59 - 1:02I began talking to other people,
little by little, -
1:02 - 1:04breaking out from my introverted shell.
-
1:04 - 1:07And started getting involved
at the community of Boyle Heights, -
1:07 - 1:11but I didn’t know what I wanted
to be, what I wanted to do. -
1:11 - 1:15And it all changed, when I stepped
into a community garden, -
1:15 - 1:18learning about the community
and that got me thinking: -
1:18 - 1:20"Why not do something on my own?"
-
1:20 - 1:24That’s when we created
Project Alebrije in Casa Americano. -
1:24 - 1:26That lasted for three years,
-
1:26 - 1:30I’ve been a mentor for this past year
for the Las Fotos’ Project. -
1:30 - 1:33It’s something where I'm just
throwing myself out there, saying, -
1:33 - 1:35"Yeah, why not, let's try this."
-
1:35 - 1:39And it’s been something where I am just
growing and growing and I am learning. -
1:39 - 1:42I see myself doing something
on my own, creating my own future -
1:42 - 1:45and creating the future
of others, by teaching them -
1:45 - 1:50that dreams are possible,
anything you set your mind to is doable. -
1:50 - 1:56And I have a little trick for you to show
you these twenty years how I’ve evolved. -
1:59 - 2:04Like everybody knows, we all grow
with a blank piece of paper. -
2:04 - 2:08A book isn't written,
because the story hasn’t been told -
2:08 - 2:10and with this I just want to show you:
-
2:10 - 2:15we are that page,
there’s nothing said or done, -
2:15 - 2:18but because of the people around us,
they start to mould us and tell us, -
2:18 - 2:20"You can't do."
-
2:20 - 2:21You start thinking above.
-
2:22 - 2:27And that's when you start seeing pictures,
something that is different. -
2:28 - 2:30(Applause)
-
2:32 - 2:35And the only thing,
they don’t have to just tell you, -
2:35 - 2:38but you also have to act,
you have to do something. -
2:38 - 2:41Because all these mentors and people
around me, they have told me, -
2:41 - 2:42"You can do it."
-
2:42 - 2:45And not only did I listen to them,
but I actually did something -
2:45 - 2:49to create change:
I started adding colour to my life. -
2:50 - 2:52(Laughter) (Applause)
-
2:56 - 3:00And if it wasn’t for all that,
my life would just be black. -
3:00 - 3:04(Laughter) (Applause)
-
3:08 - 3:10And so I thank everybody here
-
3:10 - 3:14and I know that height isn’t measured
from head to toe, because I’m just 4'11", -
3:14 - 3:17but it’s measured from head to the sky.
-
3:17 - 3:18Thank you.
-
3:18 - 3:19(Applause)

In 2:56 - 3:00 there's a mistake. It's "blank", not "black", right? But I'm not allowed to review.
If someone can correct this :)
Thanks.

1:20 Casa Americano -> Casa del Mexicano
in the on-screen text it's written "Mexican House" at this moment of the talk

2:18 "You can't do." -> "You can do."
The subsequent context and the images at the book showing people doing happy and difficult things show you that it's "can" instead of "can't". She is talking about the mentos of the program and the effects on the teenagers.
