  • 0:00 - 0:02
    (Music playing)
This school is going zero waste!
  • 0:02 - 0:09
Schools across the USA create tons of
    trash.
  • 0:09 - 0:13
But Peachtown Elementary in New York is
showing that less waste is possible!
  • 0:13 - 0:17
At this school, food waste doesn't go into
    the trash.
  • 0:17 - 0:20
Instead it is composted and turned into
    soil for the garden.
  • 0:20 - 0:24
There are no vending machines with
    packaged food and bottled water.
  • 0:24 - 0:28
The kids drink water out of reusable cups.
  • 0:28 - 0:32
As a small school, they don't have a
    cafeteria.
  • 0:32 - 0:38
Students bring their own lunch in
    reusable containers.
  • 0:38 - 0:43
It's not just the kids learning to go zero
    waste. It's the parents, too!
  • 0:43 - 0:48
In classes they repurpose materials for
    arts and science projects.
  • 0:48 - 0:52
They even grow some of their own
    vegetables in their garden.
  • 0:52 - 0:56
Of course they recycle, but students learn
    that recycling isn't the solution.
  • 0:56 - 1:00
Reduce and reuse come first, recycling
    comes last.
  • 1:00 - 1:04
The kids help with the compost, recycling
    and trash.
  • 1:04 - 1:08
They are well aware of the waste they
    create.
  • 1:08 - 1:13
They share local resources, too, such as
    walking to a nearby library.
  • 1:13 - 1:16
Peachtown did not start off zero waste.
  • 1:16 - 1:20
They have made changes one at at at time.
  • 1:20 - 1:24
Now with easy systems in place
  • 1:24 - 1:29
living with less waste feels like the
    norm.
  • 1:29 - 1:33
Share this video if you think all schools
should strive to be zero waste!
