(Music playing) This school is going zero waste! Schools across the USA create tons of trash. But Peachtown Elementary in New York is showing that less waste is possible! At this school, food waste doesn't go into the trash. Instead it is composted and turned into soil for the garden. There are no vending machines with packaged food and bottled water. The kids drink water out of reusable cups. As a small school, they don't have a cafeteria. Students bring their own lunch in reusable containers. It's not just the kids learning to go zero waste. It's the parents, too! In classes they repurpose materials for arts and science projects. They even grow some of their own vegetables in their garden. Of course they recycle, but students learn that recycling isn't the solution. Reduce and reuse come first, recycling comes last. The kids help with the compost, recycling and trash. They are well aware of the waste they create. They share local resources, too, such as walking to a nearby library. Peachtown did not start off zero waste. They have made changes one at at at time. Now with easy systems in place living with less waste feels like the norm. Share this video if you think all schools should strive to be zero waste! (Music playing)
