All ANIMATION TECHNIQUES - List
-
0:00 - 0:02Let's explain a bit
the animation techniques. -
0:02 - 0:04So, for starters,
-
0:04 - 0:07remember that animation is an illusion,
-
0:07 - 0:09so everything you see is not real.
-
0:09 - 0:11Even I am not really moving now.
-
0:11 - 0:14You're just seeing a semplification...
-
0:14 - 0:17...of the movement I made right now,
-
0:17 - 0:21because the video camera takes
thirty frames per second, -
0:21 - 0:23which simplify my movement...
-
0:23 - 0:27...and create the illusion,
but you don't really see the movement. -
0:27 - 0:30This illusion works incredibly well.
-
0:30 - 0:31How does animation work?
-
0:31 - 0:33Animation consists in:
-
0:33 - 0:38instead of taking someone
who is really moving, -
0:38 - 0:43and using a movie camera
to record their movement... -
0:43 - 0:45...and creating a simulation,
-
0:45 - 0:46we do the opposite.
-
0:46 - 0:49There is no movie camera in animation.
-
0:49 - 0:50There is none.
-
0:50 - 0:53You don't need
the techonolgy of the machine... -
0:53 - 0:56...recording you
with thirty frames per second, -
0:56 - 0:58because each picture can be taken...
-
0:58 - 1:01...potentially even years later.
-
1:01 - 1:06Animation is that illusion
in which I, human being, -
1:06 - 1:10take pictures whenever I want,
-
1:10 - 1:16to create the illusion that something
that can't actually move, is moving. -
1:16 - 1:20The most famous and used
technique ever is the traditional. -
1:20 - 1:24The traditional technique
consists in a drawing, -
1:24 - 1:26which gets redone from scratch,
-
1:26 - 1:28and redone again,
-
1:28 - 1:30and redone again.
-
1:30 - 1:33Each drawing you make has
some slight changes, -
1:33 - 1:36so when you see
these drawings in sequence... -
1:36 - 1:38...it creates
the illusion of movement. -
1:38 - 1:41Pretty simple concept, right?
This is traditional animation. -
1:41 - 1:46Then it takes many names
based on the support used to draw. -
1:46 - 1:49If you use a cel,
that is an acetate sheet, -
1:49 - 1:51with a paper sheet, strapped together,
-
1:51 - 1:54it's hard to explain,
but that is an animation cel. -
1:54 - 1:57If you use a real classic drawing,
-
1:57 - 1:59done by pen nib and all that,
-
1:59 - 2:01that is traditional animation.
-
2:01 - 2:04If you instead used
the same technique, -
2:04 - 2:06but the sheet was digital...
-
2:06 - 2:10...and the drawings are made
on a tablet, for instance, -
2:10 - 2:11it's called paperless.
-
2:11 - 2:13And it's the same as
traditional technique, -
2:13 - 2:16there's simply no paper waste.
-
2:16 - 2:17What if it's with pixels?
-
2:17 - 2:18That's pixel animation.
-
2:18 - 2:21Pixel animation is the same thing,
-
2:21 - 2:23but the drawing this time is made...
-
2:23 - 2:26...using little colored
squares called pixels. -
2:26 - 2:29You could animate
in any other way, using sand, -
2:29 - 2:31you could use any support...
-
2:31 - 2:34...but if every time
you have to redraw the character, -
2:34 - 2:35it's traditional animation.
-
2:36 - 2:39Rotoscope is one of the types
of traditional animation. -
2:39 - 2:41What is the rotoscope?
-
2:41 - 2:44It's the same thing,
but I didn't make up a drawing, -
2:44 - 2:46I filmed a person...
-
2:46 - 2:49...and now I'm tracing
the individual frames. -
2:49 - 2:52There are also full movies
made with rotoscope, -
2:52 - 2:55tv series made with rotoscope,
-
2:55 - 2:58but in the past
the rotoscope was mainly used... -
2:58 - 3:00...to create more realistic humans,
-
3:00 - 3:03who perhaps could
be a bit unsettling... -
3:03 - 3:06...and, I don't know,
give off a strange feeling. -
3:06 - 3:08In Pinocchio and 101 Dalmatians...
-
3:08 - 3:10...the vehicles are animated
with rotoscope, -
3:10 - 3:13so there are tiny models
that actually move, -
3:13 - 3:15they are filmed and then
the movement is traced. -
3:15 - 3:18In The Lord of the Rings
everything is in rotoscope, -
3:18 - 3:21there are real people actually moving,
-
3:21 - 3:22that get traced later.
-
3:22 - 3:25Nowadays we hear much
about cel-shading. -
3:25 - 3:26What is cel-shading?
-
3:26 - 3:29It's just an effect
you apply to your drawing. -
3:29 - 3:30So you make traditional animation,
-
3:30 - 3:33usually paperless, all chill,
-
3:34 - 3:38but then you use the computer
to help you with the lights. -
3:38 - 3:40And maybe some other details too.
-
3:40 - 3:42That's what happened
in Klaus for example. -
3:42 - 3:44So you drew everything by hand,
-
3:44 - 3:47the lights are simply
done with the computer. -
3:47 - 3:50Disney already used
another technology called C.A.P.S., -
3:50 - 3:53
