Made the Movie - Trade Not Aid

  • 0:48 - 0:53
Jane Shepherdson (CEO Whistles): "Made for me is all about great well-designed jewellery
  • 0:53 - 0:56
and secondly, its an ethical brand, it's sustainable,
  • 0:57 - 1:00
and so therefore there's a feel-good factor for buying it."
  • 1:06 - 1:10
The powerful concept behind Made is the brainchild of Christina Cisilino.
  • 1:10 - 1:13
Having spent many years in the world of fashion,
  • 1:13 - 1:17
Christina's love of Africa and her belief in "trade not aid"
  • 1:17 - 1:20
led her to create an accessories brand with a conscience.
  • 1:24 - 1:27
The majority of Made's employees live in Kibera,
  • 1:27 - 1:32
Nairobi's largest slum, and home to as many as 1,2 million people.
  • 1:34 - 1:40
Paul Asunga (Workshop Director): "Made is really trying to uplift us from the slums
  • 1:40 - 1:46
up to areas like now we are. We are no longer working in slums,
  • 1:46 - 1:48
    we are now being invested."
  • 1:51 - 1:53
Following the principles of fair trade,
  • 1:53 - 1:56
we train local artisans in new skills,
  • 1:56 - 1:59
providing fair wages and support at every level.
  • 2:05 - 2:08
Mercy Simalio (Artisan): "Made has helped me in many ways.
  • 2:08 - 2:12
Right now, at home, I can support the family,
  • 2:12 - 2:14
I can pay school fees for my brothers,
  • 2:14 - 2:16
I can help the neighbors who can't work.
  • 2:16 - 2:19
Sometimes we have some piece of work here
  • 2:19 - 2:23
and we're going to give them so they can get a living."
  • 2:24 - 2:27
Via this "trade not aid" ethos, we believe
  • 2:27 - 2:30
we can help break the cycle of poverty,
  • 2:30 - 2:32
and empower the people who create our products.
  • 2:35 - 2:37
Wilfried Kamau (Artisan): "My life has greatly changed.
  • 2:37 - 2:41
I used to dream of art, and everything that is made here is
  • 2:41 - 2:45
out of art, and I feel they are gorgeous, they are beautiful.
  • 2:45 - 2:50
And out of that, I feel it's like my life has really moved forward.
  • 2:50 - 2:53
When I was still out of Made I was really looking
  • 2:53 - 2:56
for somewhere life where will be controlled more
  • 2:56 - 3:00
by art, and when I was given a chance here to make that finally I was
  • 3:00 - 3:05
like exactly this is heaven for me, here, working at Made."
  • 3:09 - 3:12
Isabel Wambui (General Manager): " Made is a certified ethical company,
  • 3:12 - 3:14
more to that we ensure that our employees
  • 3:14 - 3:18
receive fair wage which is way above the minimum required.
  • 3:18 - 3:21
We also ensure that they have free bank accounts,
  • 3:21 - 3:24
and give them good reference to the bank so that
  • 3:24 - 3:27
they can access the loan facility.
  • 3:27 - 3:30
We also have additional benefits to our employees,
  • 3:30 - 3:36
We have a social security fund, and also the health insurance fund."
  • 3:36 - 3:39
Vicky Sarge (founder of Erickson Beamon): "Well after meeting with Christina and really learning all
  • 3:39 - 3:44
about the company, and really realising that Made actually
  • 3:44 - 3:47
supports a whole community of people, I found
  • 3:47 - 3:51
that very exciting to work with because, I think that
  • 3:51 - 3:56
is the way of the future, to provide people with jobs
  • 3:56 - 3:57
    where there aren't any."
  • 4:00 - 4:04
All Made products are designed by influential designers from across the globe,
  • 4:04 - 4:10
then sourced from sustainable raw materials and created within the Made workshop in Nairobi.
  • 4:11 - 4:15
Pippa Small (designer): "When I come to Nairobi I work with everyone in the workshop.
  • 4:15 - 4:18
Mostly people in the workshop are from Kibera, I work with
  • 4:18 - 4:22
Arman on the metal work, Sami has also helped me develop some new designs.
  • 4:23 - 4:25
So various people in the workshop who are then
  • 4:25 - 4:32
specializing in different areas, whether it's making chain, or beading, or setting the glass, or drilling.
  • 4:32 - 4:34
I'm actually working with most people in different areas.
  • 4:34 - 4:39
When I came we did handling chain, so it was about teaching them how to do chain work,
  • 4:39 - 4:47
then we did ligating. I bring a lot of samples of my own jewellery, so they can see different techniques, different ways of setting things,
  • 4:47 - 4:51
different ways of hanging things, so yeah, there's a bit of training that goes on.
  • 4:51 - 4:57
Charlie Miller (Executive Fashion and Beauty Director): "Made first and foremost is about beautifully designed jewellery, very unique pieces,
  • 4:57 - 5:02
and then of course when you delve deeper, it's about jewellery with a conscience."
  • 5:02 - 5:10
Jane Shepherdson (CEO Whistles): "I think she has really made quite a difference in this arena, she has shown that ethical can be very fashionable,
  • 5:10 - 5:15
can be very directional as well as helping people and being very sustainable."
  • 5:16 - 5:24
Made produces beautiful, high-quality accessories. Walk down any high street and you'll see our jewellery.
  • 5:25 - 5:29
From Topshop to Erickson Beamon, from Jigsaw to John Lewis.
  • 5:31 - 5:41
"Made is about the combination of great design, a huge amount of passion, and I think the ability to
  • 5:41 - 5:42
    change people's lives."
  • 5:43 - 5:47
"To sum up what Made means to me is, the future."
  • 5:48 - 5:55
Christina Cisilino (founder of Made): "It is Made's mission to make stunningly beautiful fashion accessories created by influential designers.
  • 5:55 - 6:01
And in the same process to empower artisans from developing communities in Africa,
  • 6:01 - 6:07
to be a sustainable business, following the principle of fair trade. We truly believe that
  • 6:07 - 6:11
trade is the key to eradicate poverty in Africa."
